How to make Timeline not conflict with jQuery?

For some reason Timeline messes up some jQuery modal stuff our designers built.

I realize that jQuery has a noconflict mode, but our designers are used to using the jQuery "$" shortcut. Is there a noconflict mode for Timeline? Has anyone run into this problem before?
