I need help disabling the "writer-mode" on OpenOffice

I am still new at using your OpenOffice.org program and I must have accidently touched the wrong icon "overwrite" which erases what I try and type. The "undue" icon does not help to correct the problem. I'm sure there is a simple solution, but I don't know what it is. Can you help me?
