I released a game!!1!!

Hi,

So, yesterday a game I wrote for the xbox 360 went on sale via Xbox LIVE
Marketplace. It's called Star Hammer Tactics, it's a "tactical battle game"
and there's a site with info at www.starhammer.com. It's a game I've wanted
to write for many years, and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.
(BTW, a PlayStation [PSP/PS3] version is not far away).

I'm putting some effort into promoting the game at the moment. I even wrote
a press release (http://bit.ly/avT0sC)!!

We have a wide range of people on this list, and I was thinking, if anybody
around here perhaps knows anybody in game journalism or blogging that might
be interested in writing about the game, I'd be mighty grateful for either
a) forwarding this message, or b) passing on some contact details.

I'm also able to provide review codes in case that's useful.

(BTW, unfortuneatly, the game is not available in Australia :( because Indie
Games aren't available here).

Thanks!!

L8r, Paul

Paul, did you forward your press release to gamespress.com?  Free to upload press material and it gets picked up by a lot of the automated news sites.

What is the gamespress site? I have been building a small list of
people/sites/emails to send info to once my game is finished:

* TIG Source + forum post (as suggested by Avril a while back)
<http://www.tigsource.com/>
* Offworld - Brandon Boyer - <http://offworld.com/>
* Indie Games blog - Mike - <http://indiegames.com/blog>
* Rock, Paper, Shotguy - Kieron Gillen -
<http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/>

Here is a great article by Kieron  about using the game press to market
your game:
<http://gillen.cream.org/wordpress_html/?page_id=693>

Other blogs which wrote about my game when I made a demo video:

* Dutycycle
* Gay gamer
* Game Set Watch
* Atlanta Chronicle (huh?)

I think Dutycycle wrote something first (because I used music by an
mp3death artist) and then that got picked up by heaps of other blogs
since Jordan from Dutycycle is very well connected!

What other suggestions do people have? Would it help if a few other
people agreed to email some publications about your game independently?
Maybe we could get the wheels of the unofficial PIGMI marketing machine
into action. :)

I guess a more comphrehensive list of sites and people to contact would
be a good resource for all of us - maybe Let's Make Games are interested
in hosting something like that? Or else I could put up a page on
pigmi.org if not.

Chris.

I have a kind-of-decent sized list of sites we've sent promo codes to in the past, but they're all iDevice App review sites - not necessarily helpful to everyone on this list.  Still happy to share though for anyone interested. =)

Also I think AussieIndie is still up and running - www.aussieindie.com - not sure what the traffic is like?, but definitely matches the bill for what this list could possibly use.

* Atlanta Chronicle (huh?)

Chris.

Hey Nick, I know it says to make comments below the articles, but since
I'm on the list... :) In regards to,

"It’s a good idea to write a press release and to distribute it as
widely as possible."

I don't believe it's good idea to write a press release yourself, unless
you know what you're doing. Paul's turned out fairly well, but that
typically doesn't happen for the vast majority. (assuming Paul that you
wrote yours) A good idea is to pay $100 (or so) and hire a professional
to do it for you. You can usually find them on indiegamer, since they
tend to come and go. We hired a guy back in the day and wound up on some
very prominent websites with no effort on our part. I think we paid $70,
and it was well worth it, since there's a ton that can go wrong with
them if you're inexperienced.

"When releasing a game, it’s a good idea to have a press release and to
distribute it as widely as possible. If you are a confident writer, you
can write it yourself. If you aren’t, you may want to pay $100 (or so)
to hire a professional writer to do it for you. You can usually find
writers on Indie Gamer.
