Perhaps it's my imagination but we seem to be overun by tidal waves of spam
at the moment. I'm blocking about 5-10 people a day currently.

Presuming that it it bots at work, is it possible to do anything to tighten
up the new user sign up process?

Yeah I agree-- the spam sucks.  I'm willing to enable Drupal modules if
somebody can do the legwork and figure out which ones are the most
effective.

I've been using mollom.com on a couple of sites and have been very happy with it, but we'd need to negotiate some kinda of deal with them so we don't have to pay them lots and lots.
