IBM 6262Hello!
According to a thread on IBVM today the 6262 is a rather old beastie. Can we, ah, add one of those to our original VM/370rel6 configuration file? Or is this particular printer too new for VM/370rel6? -- Gregg C Levine hansolofalcon@... "The Force will be with you always." Obi-Wan Kenobi |

Isn't this the printer that was a recycled 1403, with a 3211-style FCB added to replace the carriage tape? If so, it would be a 3211 as far as the interface goes. The other was brought in some time later, purchased as a used printer, to replace a pair of 4245s. Re: IBM 6262There were several printers from IBM that were used to replace the 1403/3211. The 6262 and the 4248 both fall into that category. There were some differences namely in the print train or band configuration. Some customers are still using impact printers because of the stock that is being printed. For example, the vehicle license plate stickers that are affixed to the new registration form. These are difficult to be sent through a cut sheet printer.
As new printers were developed, IBM added support for different attachments including coax, twin-ax, bus/tag and later ethernet. The VM370 system does not know about the newer printers. The 6262 is nothing like a 1403... The train was replaced with a band, the FCB is soft, not paper, it has an integrated controller, etc. Paul --- In H390-VM@..., Kevin Monceaux <Kevin@...> wrote: > > On Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 04:36:31PM -0400, Tony Harminc wrote: > > > Isn't this the printer that was a recycled 1403, with a 3211-style > > FCB added to replace the carriage tape? RE: Re: IBM 6262Hello!
I quite agree Paul. And in the original note about this, I mentioned that VM/370 would not probably contain support for this beast, but that say VM/ESA (any version) probably would. Or whatever the next release of VM afterwards would also. -- Gregg C Levine hansolofalcon@... "The Force will be with you always." Obi-Wan Kenobi > -----Original Message----- > From: H390-VM@... But there was an IBM printer that was built from returned (off-lease) 1403 N1s, with the paper carriage tape replaced by an FCB. Essentially a slower 3211. I had thought that was the 6262, but it must be some other number. Tony H. |

RE: Re: IBM 6262The 3203 used the 1403 print trains but had an FCB. I first saw one in 1978
attached to a 3138 (370/138). |

RE: Re: IBM 6262Greg,
Older versions of VM than ESA contain support for the 3262. I certainly used one on a 4331 or 4361 when I was working on Network/VM for IBM (as company not me personally), and before that we had a 4248 on the system I worked at in NERC (www.nerc.ac.uk). The system at NERC started out on HPO4.2 I think, and whilst I was paid to work on VM I never saw any thing later thing later than SP6. I guess it came in some time through the life of SP but as the only announcement letter I have is for SP5 and we don't have manuals for older versions, its hard to say when it was introduced. http://vm.marist.edu/~vmshare/browse?fn=3262&ft=PROB&args=3262#hit Contains some notes about the issues with the remote use of these when equipped with a co-ax socket for use on a 3174... RE: Re: IBM 6262Gregg initially asked about 6262, not 3262, support.
With respect to the 3262, my experience was in an environment when it was connected to a 3276 or a 3274 as SNA LU1, and then MVS so it is drifting OT for VM. We just saw/treated the 3262 as any LU1 printer. 3287, 3289 or 3262 made no difference, in fact the devices were often interchanged in the test environment (which co-ax will we connect this time?) with only the dot-matrix output of the 3287 being the only noticeable difference. |

I looked into other VM releases and till VM/ESA 2.40 it was still unsupported (according to some rumours it was supported as a 4248, but I could not test it, because Hercules supports only 1403 and 3211 printers).
