Hi all,
Using ICD2 with XP it's a pain...
So I'm currently using mine with Windows 2000 and MPLab 8.20 (and from
some days with 8.33).
It's working very well, without problems!

Actually the Win 2000 is in a virtual machine of VMWare Workstation
6.5.2 and with the "Unity" option it shares the screen with other
windows like if it was "native".

What do you mean? What is it that is painful?
Is it still that you have to klick an extra time to release the reset, or...?
Maybe you use other chips than me...?
I have a couple that I use with XP and MPLAB 8.20
and I have not had any problems.

Often (sometime once per hour but sometime more) the ICD2 and MPLab stop
communicating and you need to
- set MPLab to no debugger (same problem occurs in programmer mode but
it is in debug that cause problems)
- disconnect the ICD2 from the circuit
- disconnect the ICD2 from the USB cable
- wait some second
- connect the ICD2 to the USB
- enable the debugger in MPLAB
- connect the ICD2 to the circuit
Some times you must retry the operation...
I read that more people accuse this "disturb"!
With Win 2000 it not happens, I can work hours...

difference.

Yes it is painful..
Before they broke it - 1 key to build, program and run.
Now : 1 key, wait for program ( because the key isn't buffered), then  second key to release reset.

Over few dozen build cycles it becomes very annoying, especially as it's so unneccessary and so
easily fixable if they could be bothered.

The 1-step option is available when using ICD 2 as a debugger.  You should be able to get your firmware developed using ICD 2 as a debugger, then switch to programmer after you have completed your development.

Hi Mike,

If Microchip just recently broke it why don't you go back to the last version that did work?

I kill these little annoyances with autoit ( http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/ )
-autoit waits invisibly in the background for the programming completed confirmation
-autoit sends keystroke to release reset
-autoit go's back to waiting for programming completed confirmation
everyone is happy again till Microchip had time to fix the problem

Peter
