*New podcast: MEMORABILIA. COLLECTING SOUNDS WITH... Ed Veenstra. Part II
*
A musical selection of some of the secret jewels found in Ed Veenstra's
record collection, specialised in Broken Music: records and paramusical
works produced by visual artists and other avant-garde creators.

Link: http://bit.ly/JkfdCi
MP3: http://bit.ly/JNcQuI
Related info: http://bit.ly/K5aG9q

*Music selected by Ed Veenstra. Mix produced by Genís Segarra
*
In the early sixties Milan Knížák began experimenting with vinyl records by
scratching, painting, burning or even breaking them. These fierce
treatments affected not only radically the original compositions but also
expanded the function of the records themselves. Because it was almost
impossible to transfer the distorted sounds to standard sheet music, Knížák
considered the records with all their cuts, paint, punched holes, glue and
scratches a new form of musical notation. Additionally the records became
art objects.

On February 18, 1988, Daadgalerie in Berlin opened its doors for Broken
Music. The exhibition, curated by Ursula Block and Michael Glasmeier,
featured objects, sleeves, and installations by visual artists with records
as main source. Many of the exhibited works featured sound by visual
artists. The exhibition catalogue containing theory, a historical overview
and an extensive and illustrated discography is still influential and an
asset for anyone interested in visual artists working with records as
medium and/or sound.

More than twenty years after the exhibition and the never reprinted
catalogue the term Broken Music managed to survive as a genre although its
definition seems to have narrowed down to just sound by visual artists.
This audio-selection is mainly focused on visual artists for whom sound is
an extension or component of their visual work. Some of the records you are
about to hear were chosen because they are extraordinary rare. Some are
here because they are. Ed Veenstra, 2011

*This show is a follow-up of the monograph on Ed Veenstra's sound
collection. You can find the previous episode here: MEMORABILIA. COLLECTING
groovier than Oxin2lin and Plonked Spectral.

*Conversation with Jonny Trunk on his sound collection
*
Link: http://bit.ly/KhNsK8
PDF: http://bit.ly/JTjEXg

This is a conversation by email with record collector Jonny Trunk, which
took place on April-May 2012, to prepare a monograph on his library music
collection.

Jonny Trunk founded the label Trunk Records in 1995, and it soon gained a
cult following as a result of its specialisation in unpublished jazz
recordings and film and television soundtracks. Trunk Records was the first
label to feature non-commercial library music, a genre that Trunk has
written about extensively. Trunk hosts a radio programme at London radio
station Resonance FM, and he regularly DJs around the world. He began
collecting records around 1982, but rather than focusing on traditional
record stores, he chose to comb second hand outlets and street markets. It
didn’t take long for him to realise that his obsession was not pop music or
modern sounds, but film soundtracks and television music. His record
collection now consists of around six thousand LPs and his library music
collection focuses on the period from 1966 to 1978 and exhaustively
explores british, french, italian and german productions.

*Lecture on collecting library music, by Jonny Trunk: May 16, 9 pm. MACBA
Auditorium. Free admission
*
Teaser: http://rwm.macba.cat/en/extra/teaser_memorabilia_jonny_trunk/capsula

In this hybrid lecture/audition, Jonny Trunk will be sharing his collection
of library music records, which he started in 1982 and now contains around
6000 LPs. Also known as *sonorizzazioni*, the term library music
encompasses the audio productions made for professional use in the context
of film, television and radio. This exciting musical underworld is part of
the collective imagination, and yet it remains practically unknown to the
general public.

Jonny Trunk founded the label Trunk Records in 1995, and it soon gained a
cult following as a result of its specialisation in unpublished jazz
recordings and film and television soundtracks. Trunk Records was the first
label to feature non-commercial "library music", a genre that Trunk has
written about extensively. Trunk hosts a radio programme at London radio
station Resonance FM, and he regularly DJs around the world. He began
collecting records around 1982, but rather than focusing on traditional
record stores, he chose to comb second hand outlets and street markets. It
didn't take long for him to realise that his obsession was not pop music or
modern sounds, but film soundtracks and television music. His record
collection now consists of around six thousand LPs.
