...and one more test with kh17b. From 2.3.2 to kh17b the "wakeups/s"
figure has come down 84% - 98% in my test cases. I have very little
idea what Karl's been doing but from a user POV the results look very
good.

Karl asked me to test with his kh17 branch and I did.

It looks like this is the first time there is a difference between not
doing anything and actually streaming (this could be a result of my
very non-scientific testing but the numbers looked fairly constant).

This is a lot better for my use case case (mostly idle). Even the
difference when streaming looks significant: the number of wakeups
stays fairly stable over time so the 13 vs 10 difference should be a
statistically significant one.

Thanks, Karl. Testing with trunk I can confirm this. Just as before it
doesn't seem to make difference if icecast streams something or not,
but there is a significant improvement compared to 2.3.2:

2.3.2 44 wakeups/s
trunk 13 wakeups/s

13 wakeups is still not optimal when in reality my icecast usually has
nothing to do (no mounts, no clients), but it is a lot better.

This will vary depending on what you have icecast doing but you should
find that the trunk code has less wakeups. The connection and stats
parts are not quite the same as the kh tree, although they have been
changed, so you should see an improvement.

I would have filed this as a bug but bugs.xiph.org doesn't seem to work
(despite quite enthusiastically claiming to :)). So here goes:

I'm seeing quite a few wakeups/sec in icecast2 2.3.2 on Debian Testing.
In fact, whether icecast is doing anything or not, powertop reports 44.3
wakeups per second. This is pretty big number, on my laptop it means
icecast alone is responsible for every third wakeup on idle.

I have no time to start digging through the code right now, but please
post if you have a hunch where these wakeups are coming from. If I have
time later, I'll consult this thread.

patch to make media player classic works in stream mode instead of download play mode (shoutcastsource)

when media player classic is usually bundled in vary codec packs which
are widely used by most of the windows user that insode code pack, so
it would be nice if icecast support it instead of just fixing media
player classic. and btw it looks like media player classic is not
maintained anymore, except there is a mpc-hc

the problem is that MPC/MPC-HC is too strict that it require the
server response "ICY" instead of "HTTP/1.0"

Dirac is certainly a possibility. If you are talking of that being in an
ogg container then you probably want to look at theora as a reference.

Nonblocking connect is not proprly checked in poll implementation

Hello,

I found a bug in Icecast-2.3.2. SVN trunk is affected either. The problem lies
in src/net/sock.c: sock_connected() function.

This function is used to check status of socket after nonblocking connect(2)
and it has two implementations: select(2) and poll(2). The select branch does
the right job---it gets socket status by getsockopt(2) after selecting for
write. But the poll branch does not. To make things wrong, the poll
implementaion takes precedense.

The bug makes icecast thinking the connection succeded even it's not true. You
can reproduce the bug by requesting mount point pointing to
<http://fm4.nobody.at:8080/fm4-mq.ogg>. Given domain name has both AAAA and
A records, but the AAAA is unreachable. Current code failes on writing request
to the server and it does not try another IP address to connect to.

I copied the code from select implementation into poll branch and it fixed the
problem. Patch follows.

grabbing raw PCM from ices2

Hi,

I'm running Ices 2.0.1 in conjunction with Icecast 2.3.1 (on gentoo
linux) to generate a live ogg stream for radio station WTJU
(http://wtju.net/). In addition to encoding and streaming live audio,
we'd like to record our broadcasts to disk for archival. I know that
ices has a "savefile" feature, but that isn't so useful, because the
file being written simply grows without bound for as long as ices
continues to run. That might be ok if the file could be periodically
truncated to its beginning (rather than to its end), but I don't know
any way of doing that on an open file. Also, the savefile feature writes
the encoded data, but we'd prefer to have access to the raw PCM for
later encoding to FLAC. (Ices is getting its data from an ALSA device;
maybe there's some way of tapping ALSA directly? Anyway...)

What would be useful for us is some sort of audio FIFO by which other
processes could tap ices' incoming PCM stream, without fear of filling
the disk partition with a single ever-growing file. I have implemented
such a FIFO as a simple circular buffer, where each "cell" in the buffer
is a file of fixed maximum size. As each file is filled with PCM data to
its maximum, ices moves on to the next, and round and round it goes.
Synchronization with reader processes is achieved with file locking.
Seems to work. Shared memory might be another way to do this.

If anyone is interested, I'm willing to supply a set of diffs.

Icecast with SAM Broadcaster.

Hi.

I was using icecast2 with ogg plugin and playing mp3's from Winamp but i would like to change it to SAM Broadcaster.

I added a static relay with the host: localhost, port:8000, admin username & password: what i wrote in the icecast.xml

On the mountpoint details when i was using winamp it was /stream.ogg but it seams it dosent work with sam.

I tried the default which is /live and i get the error: 401, Error retrieving xml document (Authentication Required!)

Can anyone help me out pls?

As RoarAudio supports streaming to Icecast (as virtual soundcard) and
playback of icecast streams it would be nice to be included on the list
of 3rd party applications on the homepage at
http://icecast.org/3rdparty.php.

I asked on IRC how to get included and I was told to simply ask here.

It runs on all POSIX systems and some more (win32 with cygwin, ...).

The sourcecode of the icecast yp is available from svn. Also there is a
webpage with some info.
So you can have the sources for both sides and there is IIRC also some
documentation.

Do you need more?

After you implement the yp-api every user that wants to can just add the
above snippet to his server config and will be listed at your directory.

Icecast streams included in StreamFinder.com

Hi-

I am writing to see if icecast can be configured to send a stream
update to StreamFinder.com in a similar manner to the way it handles
talking to shoutcast yp. ?

We would like to be able to offer live updates of icecast servers on
our site for our visitors and broadcasters...

Is icecast.org still active ?

Hi all !

Sorry to raise a provocative question like this at first glance, but that is
the real topic in this mail.

Some months ago, I proposed a patch to libshout adding custom mime
support when adding new mountpoints [1]. After some discussions and some
corrections, the patch was accepted.

Now, almost 6 month after, the patch has not yet been added to the SVN
trunk for libshout [2], as it seems.

As you can imagine, this is somehow frustrating for us, since we rely on this
patch for various features in our program.

I do not want to put a blame on anyone for this, since I know that in
volontary projects, we all have other commitements. However, as a project,
such a situation does not seem a good thing for me. In particular, it blocks
any further contribution and possible contributor.

Now, I come to this message since now we are experiencing with ogg/dirac video
encoding. As such, icecast does not support those streams. However, I wanted
to try to patch it to support them.

As you can imagine, I am now stuck since I do not really want to start such a
work if I have no garantee that my contributions will be considered...

Please, don't take this as an agressive question. I have always appreciated
icecast.org and the various great work that you did in multimedia streaming
for the free software world. However, I have come to the issue that if it
takes more than 6 months to accept a simple patch like the one for libshout,
there must be some issues in the activity level of this project.

Thanks all. I've been looking at the Tuner (by Nullriver) app as a
hypothetical solution (since I have no iPhone). I'll point my users
to WunderRadio too, in case they already have it. If Tuner2 handles
.pls playlists (a necessity for me because my icecast server is on a
dynamic IP) then I'll recommend that too (when it's available).

I've heard that apps don't background. So when you switch from the
radio app to another app, the music will stop. Is that correct?
Switching from audio stream player to web browser is critical for my
application (interactive evolutionary music at
http://evolectronica.com). I imagine it would be really nice to
evolve tunes when out and about!

A dedicated free app for Evolectronica would be really nice, but I
don't have the time for it, or enough love for Apple...

There are some players such as WunderRadio on the App Store that allow custom URLs and support metadata without modification of the Icecast or Windows Media servers to support the iPhone. The WunderRadio app costs about 5-6 dollars.

As of right now, you are out of luck in terms of instream metadata with the embedded quicktime player that's distributed with the iphone OS. As Christopher says, there are many ways to get the same effect, but they ALL require you to build custom iPhone apps. There are a whole mess of radio apps out there, and they are all pretty similar, and NONE of them use the embedded quicktime object.

The icecast patch that I wrote (and Christopher extended) just worked at a HTTP header/response level to pretty much "pretend" to be a "progressive download" server, which is the only type of streaming supported by the iphone quicktime object. It works great for certain cases, but falls a bit short in others.

iPhone patches question

Hi,

I'm just wondering what kind of functionality the iPhone patches
proposed on the list provide (e.g.
http://lists.xiph.org/pipermail/icecast-dev/2008-November/001798.html)

For example will track name metadata be displayed (in the iPhone
quicktime player, I presume)?

Assuming the answer is 'yes' to the above, will I need to provide a
direct link to the icecast stream (rather than through a .pls file
download, as I currently do), and will that need to end in .mp3 or
have a specific mime type?

Sorry for all the questions. I don't have an iPhone and so can't
answer any of them easily myself.

OGG streaming from IceCast

I would like to develop a player that will be able to play an OGG stream
from an IceCast server.
I assume that I need to retrieve data packet from IceCast and send them to
the decoder. But I don't know what is the format of the stream provided by
the IceCast server.
Could you tell me where I can find a documentation?

xspf.xsl

Hi,

Trying to use XSPF as playlist generator in Icecast I noticed the XSPF
link in the admin pages doesn't work.

I used the lastest SVN checkout.

I think it's just the simple case of the xspf.xsl file not being copied to
the installation directory on 'make install'.

I copied the file to share/icecast/admin/ and the link works just fine.
