Ideas for a new OOo logo to be presented at Orvieto?

Hi all,

Graham Lauder raised this idea in the thread about the OOoCon templates.

To raise awareness about this topic I paste the relevant part of his
posting and John McCreesh's reply to this new thread:

Even if there is no guarantee to replace the present logo with one of
the newly created logos, this would show that we are moving forward.

And there is no better opportunity than the OOoCon to convince
stakeholders of the more conservative logo of the possibilities of an
update in marketing, visual identity, user reception and community feeling.

At the moment my question is:

Who is interested in such a work, even if we don't have more than 4
weeks time?

Best regards

Bernhard

Hi!

A short time frame for sure, but I will contribute my ideas over next
weeks.

Until we have a main wiki site for this task, I will place images on
my wiki user site http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/User:JensGH

Let's start it in a dedicated part of the wiki.  Start a new page called
New_logo_proposals or pizza_order or whatever just so long as we keep it all
together.

Rules?

CC license?
and any text has to be in a Free font, no nonfree fonts allowed?

That looks like enough

Should we make an effort to put them in context as well.  Like as it is on the
website, stationery, webbanners?

Are we going to stick with the blue corporate color?

Cheers

This is a fantastic idea. I'll try to put something together as well.
In the meantime, here are some links to free fonts that people might
find useful...

I'm all in favour for modern art work. But we may not forget, that money
for renewing, printing materials, is not so limitless available for us,
as for some other office products.
This support the idea of a logo, evolving by smaller steps, IMHO.

I would prefer LGPL.

If any of the proposals (I'd call them "design ideas" for the moment)
would be integrated in the main product some day, it's license should be
compatible with the product.

From marketing POV and with regard to visual (corporate) identity I'd
like to see some more points to be taken into account:

- the logo should look serious and professional (remember that
governments and large

- provide graphical elements that can be used for our branding

- please don't alienate users and supporters of OOo who feel familiar
with the present logo. Some kind of recognition might be appropriate IMHO.

I'd keep with the logo - time is short already.

I'd like to see the OOoblue (RGB 6,52, 140) as part of the logo - this
would help us to keep at least parts of our visual identity...

LGPL it is then

"Design ideas" "Design Concepts" or "Conceptual Branding".  All sound good
seeing as how haven't actually had an RFP!  :)

Let's let it be free as we possibly can at the moment, I think everyone will
have the above in mind in any case so it goes without saying.  At this point
in the process we are dealing with the "Show Version" like carmakers do for
car shows.  It probably won't make it to production exactly as is but it may
influence it broadly.

The other option is come up with a couple schemas and then we all have a shot
at variations on that theme.  So for instance (and please everyone feel free
to shoot these down and substitute your own)

Use the present Icon colours only and 6-52-140
A Gull type bug and/or the reverse "S"
and use the "liberation" font set.

And we set a time frame... say two weeks from today to have something nailed
down.

I would suggest also making notes of your design inspirations and reasoning in
the same way as you would if you were doing a branding pitch to a client.

Cheers
GL

Hi all,

I started to create a wiki page at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Art/Visual_Concept_Proposals

I included the time frame Graham proposed:

End of logo upload on 24th of October.

Is this OK for you?

Please improve the page, comment and upload your drafts...

Best regards

All

I've put two up, linked to the source SVG as well.  Please feel free to screw
with them and make them better, others (a little more extreme) in the pipe
line.

Jens has put one up as well which is really wicked!

I agree it's very nice but unfortunately its not 'unique'. In fact is
nearly ideantical to the old SGI cube logo. Which is exactly what I
tough of when I saw it.

A cube is never really unique ( Nintendo or Next for example ). I like
simple geometry, but it must stand alone. Only one person reminding
another logo disqualifies this one. I will think about working out the
O's another way, but a cube is a cube - and maybe this is the problem
from the start.

Hi all,

I added my logo proposal, which retains continuity with the current
OOo logo while (trying to) make it look more modern:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/File:OooLOGO.png

Some parts are obviously more polished than others. Due to personal
time constraints I can't dedicate more time to it - I just wanted to
get the concept across. The bird's wings would need redoing and the
font itself has some oddities, like the non-elliptical, slightly
bulging 'O' glyph (I liked the shapes of the other characters though).

Info about the font, etc can be found on the wiki page:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Art/Visual_Concept_Proposals#Ivan_Miskovic

Regards,
Ivan.

We all stand on others shoulders, there is little new in the world just new
interpretations, the balancing cube has been used many many times.  However I
still like the three dimensional element and it's compactness.  It lends
itself to a favicon for instance because of it's ability to scale, it's
attractive and tactile, it's shape can be used in many marketing
activities... So let's work on it to make it our own rather than dismissing
it out of hand immediately.

Hi all,

I uploaded a design concept even if it is not at all finished:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Art/Visual_Concept_Proposals#Bernhard_Dippold

Thoughts and ideas behind it are mentioned at the wiki page - we might
copy them here when we start discussing the designs...

Best regards

Bernhard
