Some parts of this message have been removed. Learn more about Nabble's security policy.

Sonification is precisely what my friend Marty Quinn has been doing for years.

I think Orlando presented his proposal at one of your meetings.  I am hoping he can come and visit when I am there either in January or March-April.

See http://www.drsrl.com/

He has already sonified some Venice data

See my blog entry regarding Steve’s visit to Marty’s house last spring: http://venice2point0.blogspot.com/2009/04/ant-fugue.html and all of the links therein!

I've looked at the DRSRL site and was inspired by their work.  I hope they come to Santa Fe and share their software and techniques.  I'd like to create an app for the iPhone that could sonify images in realtime using the iPhone's built in camera.  For example, you have a paper and several colored pens.  Draw several bumpy lines in different colors.  Photograph the score, assign instruments to the colors, specify time vs distance, and press play.  I have the iPhone developer kit and am going through the tutorials now.  It's possible that this app will be a reality.

very cool
2D then could be stepped up to 3D sonification?
Video Waveform monitors display color topography, 'don't know if that takes you anywhere but since we're open minded I suggest it.

admittedly this is kooksville but we use to take the RCA audio jack outputs on the back of a sony turntable console unit and run them into the video inputs on our 3 channel A/V production bay unit.
You could theoretcially do the opposite of that from waveform monitors, and btw waveform monitors can also breakout to graytone light gradience values as well, software and hardware ones.

Martin and I were exploring "sonic textures" in December and wrote a
quick Processing sketch to trigger different frequencies and
amplitudes. The user draws a circle anywhere and pixels that fall on a
radius are interpreted as increasing frequencies from the center. The
amplitude is the darkness of the pixel. The software then continuously
rotates the image to make a kind of circular phonograph in the circle
area. The input can be an image or a real time webcam stream.

The processing sketch is here:
   redfish.com/imagePlayer.zip

I can demo on Monday 10 minutes before the Art Group.

Very cool! Go Tyler. Will you be our first patent-holder?

Reminds me of the games and exercises I have my students do. Sonification is another term for translating one sense into another. Very similar to the exercises I have my students do.
This is educational and a nice creative stimulus when one does it oneself.
The tools and the application are all within your human brain/eye/ear/hand network.
Good practice for expanding awareness and thus innovative cross-pollination of materials, ideas, inventions, services, products.

There is a very elegant music sonification program for the Mac called Metasynth from U&I software. The programmer, Eric Wenger, was the creator  of Bryce, the artificial landscape generator from an earlier computing generation.

Metasynth contains a powerful image synthesizer in which the images can be imported and manipulated or hand drawn. There are many other capabilities of the software, and it can be used as a complete composing environment.
