Info request about DebianDear Sir/Madam:
I am new to Debian. Could you please tell me how long are the packages and updates support available for each release of Debian OS. Are older releases of Debian "hamm", "slink", "potato", "woody", "sarge", "etch" still supported, if yes, how long will they be supported. Would be very thankful for a early response. thanks, Kasuladevi -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-project-REQUEST@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmaster@... |

In general, each stable release is supported for one year after the release of the next stable release. lenny, the current stable release, was released in February of 2009, so etch will continue to be supported until February of 2010. The older releases are no longer supported. -- Russ Allbery (rra@...) <http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-project-REQUEST@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Your questions would be best directed to the ‘debian-user’ forum for assistance as a (prospective) Debian user. For further reading on how releases proceed and are supported, see the Debian FAQ <URL:http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-choosing.en.html#s3.1> and the page for each release <URL:http://www.debian.org/releases/>. -- \ “I thought I'd begin by reading a poem by Shakespeare, but then | `\ I thought ‘Why should I? You can see from Debian Security FAQ question 23 that support is available for one year after the publishing of the next Debian release. http://www.debian.org/security/faq.en.html#lifespan -- Tapio Lehtonen tapio.lehtonen@... http://www.iki.fi/tapio.lehtonen |

Re: Info request about DebianSir: Leave alone support for obsolete releases of Debian, does this mean a person using these obsolete releases doesn't have access to atleast their respective obsolete repositories for any older packages he might want to install now? If yes, I might conclude that users of older versions are compelled to shift to newer releases. Is that correct ? An answer to this I think would fully clarify my doubt. thanks, MohanSai On Fri, 09 Oct 2009 22:14:21 -0700 Russ Allbery <rra@...> wrote: > Kasuladevi <kasuladevi.ms@...> writes: > > > I am new to Debian. The old versions of Debian are still available here: http://archive.debian.org/ You can even search their packages here: http://archive.debian.net/ > If yes, I might conclude that users of older versions are compelled to > shift to newer releases. Is that correct ? "strongly encouraged" would be a more appropriate word than "compelled". Nothing prevents you from keeping the old version installed and using it if you need to. There will be no updates at all, security or otherwise. If you cannot upgrade and thus need a longer security support cycle with Debian, you could engage the services of Debian consultants in your area: http://www.debian.org/consultants/ -- bye, pabs http://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-project-REQUEST@... with a subject of "unsubscribe".
