Informal poll: what about Java 6 as the minimum requirement for GeoServer?Hi all,
I'm wondering how would people react if GeoServer minimum requirements were raised to Java 6? Nowadays we suggest to run on Java 6 to benefit for the extra performance, but GeoServer still works fine with Java 5 and it's developed and tested against it. Would you still use GeoServer if we mandated Java 6 instead? Or would you be stuck on a Java 5 compatible version? Re: Informal poll: what about Java 6 as the minimumrequirement for GeoServer?Hi Andrea,
Unfortunately we would be stuck on a java 5 compatible version since we are using geoserver on WebSphere 6.1 (A IBM java 5 version). In the future migration to Oracle/Bea Weblogic 10 will be done but until then we're stuck with java 5 Personally I don't mind a java 6 minimum requirement, but I think it's wise to see which app servers would be able to run geoserver then. Re: Informal poll: what about Java 6 as the minimumrequirement for GeoServer?I would see this as a good change in general if it helps the performance of GeoServer.
We are still running on Java 5 and might not make the switch to Java 6 anytime soon due to being on the slow side of things with this kind of upgrades. Who knows, maybe we will just wait for the next Version and will switch to that. I'm with Kris on this, "it's wise to see which app servers would be able to run geoserver then". Julian
