Inkscape 0.47 is released!

After over a year of intensive development and refactoring, Inkscape
0.47 is out. This version of the SVG-based vector graphics editor brings
improved performance and tons of new features, some of which are as
follows: Timed autosave, Spiro splines, Auto-smooth nodes, Eraser tool,
New modes in Tweak tool, Snapping toolbar & greater snapping abilities,
New Live Path Effects (including Envelope), A huge collection of preset
filters, New cairo-based PS and EPS export, Spell checker, Many new
extensions, Optimized SVG code options, and much more. Additionally, it
would be wrong to not mention the hundreds of bug fixes as well. Check

This depends on the progress of this project:
http://gtk-osx.sourceforge.net/ If you are familiar with Quartz and
GDK you might be able to help.

As for speed, I think using X11 is only a minor factor - the real
issue is that the current renderer isn't very fast and doesn't use
Cairo. Different shortcuts for Mac are not out of the question, but
this may create confusion for users that move between platforms. Can
you describe in more detail what shortcuts are wrong?

Inkscape 0.47 Downloads Page - Translations needed

Hey Translators,

I have updated the downloads page for 0.47 located at:
/inkscape_web/trunk/download/download-en.inc

It appears that we have had cs, de, es, fr, it, ja, and ru translations
in the past just so people are aware.

Also, my grep skills seem to be failing me as I can't find the file
which contains the version information "$actual_version". So, if anyone
knows where this is located or has better luck finding it, if you could
bump it to 0.47 that would be appreciated. (I will continue looking
though)

OS X native in the future?

Hi everyone,

And a serious thanks to all who contribute to this wonderful program

I used Inkscape before in windows but have since then left windows for OS X and now use it there.
Only thing is that Inkscape felt and behaved as a normal program in windows but just doesn't do that under X11 in OS X... it's slow and shortcuts are wrong.

Are there any chance of a real OS X native version in the future?
I'm for one would happily pay for a good native version of Inkscape rather than use another program.

I've posted a Inkscape-0.47-1.LEOPARD+.dmg Mac package to SourceForge. I've tested this on Leopard and on Snow Leopard.

Interesting, the python extensions are also working on my Snow Leopard machine, even though they didn't work in the prereleases built with exactly the same process. I'd be interested to hear from other people on Snow Leopard to confirm python extensions are working under Snow Leopard.

scroll horizontally by mouse wheel

Hello everybody,

on my box (Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger, PPC), the scrolling horizontally
with "shift-mouse wheel" doesnt work - neither in X11 nor in aqua,
neither 0.46 not 0.47. I found a gtk-bug on that:

but nothing in the inkscape bug tracker.

Could it be a configuration issue? - I the box "mouse wheel zooms
instead of scrolling" in "scrolling" is unchecked.

Right - we are coming to the point…

Sorry, I sent my initial message to the apple X11 list - and said
there, that I tried the most recent X11org, compiled via macports. So
what I tried is NOT to use the X11.app delivered by apple.

Wow - this looks quite complicated. Well, as the original X11 package
by apple works fairly well, I'd rather like to focus on getting
forward with inkscape aqua. Hopefully this will not change when 0.47
X11 for Mac is out…

Sorry I committed stuff to svn. From the dev mails, it wasn't clear to
me that *all* of svn is locked.

Perhaps an svn-lock on the whole tree is a good solution? Then it's
clear Inkscape moved to a different system. Or simply disabling all svn
users, as we won't be using it anyway anymore.

Sorry to yell... but seriously people, everyone needs to be patient. We
are switching to a dvcs as mentioned numerous times. If we need to
disable offending committers on SF SVN to get people to adhere to this,
so be it, but I would rather avoid that.

As mentioned a few times now, a notice will be sent to the devel list
when trunk re-opens for development. No such notice has been sent.
Please make no further changes until a notice is sent out. Again, we are
sorry about the delay in this transition to bazaar but there is a desire
to do a few things in a more friendly way if at all possible.

Ted, will these commits affect anything negatively? (I can't imagine so,
but I figured I would ask)

URGENT: Please update Mac OS X install instructions in the tarball !

Hello,

I want to repeat a request I stated a time ago:

From my experience (which was graciously shared by ~suv), the
present state of install instructions for Mac OS X is extremely
misleading and can cause people to waste a lot of time.

When a less experienced person downloads the tarball, he will tend to
read the README, which will tell him:

When trying this, this man will run into trouble.

I am very grateful that a lot of people invested lots of time in the
wonderful packaging/macosx/osx-build.sh script.

PLEASE, add a few lines to the READMEs - or create a distinguished
"README_Mac_OS_X" to make clear, that the install procedure on a Mac
is a different one.

At this occasion the wiki entries should be revised. At least
concerning the inkscape aqua affairs, the wiki is quite outdated; I
added instructions which worked on my Mac. I think, using the osx-
build.sh it's very simple now, it would be a pity to let things occur
more complicated than they are in fact…

I encountered the same behaviour. This might be caused by a POST
request size limit on Inkscape wiki's server. A workaround is to paste
some portion of the text, save, edit the last subsection in the pasted
text and then paste more. Repeat this several times until you get the
complete text.

I don't understand why it didn't work for you. Your crash report is
*identical* to the point with the one attached in bug #183322 comment #7
that was fixed by editing 'Contents/Resources/etc/fonts/fonts.conf' of
the precompiled 0.46-3 Inkscape package from sf.net.

Inkscape 0.46 crash Mac OS X

Hi ~suv,

thanks for your hints. Sorry - but the remedy doesnt cure…

I did both (remove ~/.fontconfig and remove "<cachedir>fontconfig</cachedir>" in the fonts.conf - neither makes it work.

NB.: I'm talking about the precompiled inkscape 0.46 on a macports-X11-environment.

[1] Inkscape 0.46 crash with 'FcStrListCreate'

That crash looks like a known issue to me - I can search the bug
number if needed, the fix could be necessary on two levels.
first try this:
1) clear the user font cache (rm ~/.fontconfig/*)
2) restart Inkscape
if that doesn't fix it, you have to edit the font configuration file
inside the 0.46 app bundle, I'll post a follow-up with instructions
and the link to the corresponding bug report.

A) conflict with Macports

Bug #400165 “Binary Inkscape dist crashes when MacPorts is installed”:

Issue: incompatible fontcaches in '/opt/local/var/cache/fontconfig' - a
conflict between the bundled fontconfig libraries in Inkscape 0.46 and
recently installed MacPorts fontconfig versions.

Fix: modify the Inkscape 0.46 bundle from sf.net:
edit the font configuration file
'Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/etc/fonts/fonts.conf'
to remove the following line:
<cachedir>/opt/local/var/cache/fontconfig</cachedir>

Note: The same conflicts happens with Inkscape 0.46-3 Tiger on OS X
10.4.11 if fontconfig is installed via MacPorts (see bug #183322
comments 7-14). Modifying 'fonts.conf' as described in comment 4 fixes
the issue.

B) conflict with newer Xquartz

installing an upgraded version of X11/Xquartz that also includes newer
versions of fontconfig.

Fix: clear the user font cache

the fontcaches are re-created.

Can't edit the wiki - content gets erased when saving

Hi,
I trying to create this wiki page:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ReleaseNotes047-es with the copied content from http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ReleaseNotes047
but when I save the content keeps getting erased and appears completely blank.
This only happens when I copy the complete text of the original release notes, not when I copy small parts of it. I seems to break at a certain number of characters.
Is this a known behaviour? (I'm using Firefox 3.0.13 on Suse Linux)

If this persists, what can I do? Should I breakthe Release notes in two pages?

I have a mostly functional Waf build system to replace the current
Automake + btool combo. It builds and installs Inkscape on Linux and
should work on all other platforms with some tweaking. I will publish
it in a public branch once the move to Launchpad is complete.

I've also been wondering about whether a Python build system mightn't be better in some ways for some things, especially since Bazaar is Python software and you might be able to get better integration with it there. I've not decided yet whether I'm planning on doing my Win32 packaging step for generating the Win32 installer in Python or NSIS, there are pros and cons both ways (I do intend to do it though). I think NSIS currently has the upper hand.

Well this is the way it "should" be. After this I think we should change it so that proper releases don't get a revision number; I'm not sure how revision numbers will work with Bazaar anyway, we may have to drop this convention or really start using 1bd6a70g-type revision numbers which aren't all that intelligible for what came when (the main disadvantage of DVCS I'd say).

2. The content of src/inkview.rc and src/inscape.rc has 0.46 all over.
Chris will upload a new -3 version packages correcting this defect

And yes, inkview.exe is in this lot. All 14MB of it (it only grows each package by 1MB plus or minus a bit due to solid compression). Inkscape Portable will not currently have inkview.exe as there is be no way of using it portably.

I also added the version information to inkscape.nsi (the installer) as I suddenly realised it wasn't there (I didn't notice it earlier). I also updated the copyright year from 2007 to 2009. Who should I email my changed files to for inclusion in the 0.47 branch (Adib says I should)?

scripts included in 'packaging/macosx'. There is no need for
'autogen.sh' when invoking 'configure' with 'osx-build.sh c'.

The only error is the warning about missing svn files:
> head: ../../.svn/entries: No such file or directory

Moving to Bazaar (not yet)

As we've released this is when we were planning on moving to Bazaar. I
currently don't have that perfectly the way that I want.

Basically, because we have the webpage and everything in SVN, the Bazaar
import pulls all of that into the repository. This makes the repository
larger than it needs to be. I can pull out trunk, but then I loose the
branch associations with the various branches we've made off of trunk.

I've got a few things left to try that the Bazaar team has suggested.
If it takes more than a day or two, I'll just upload the full
repository. I think that making it smaller is an optimization worth
trying for, but not a requirement. I just wanted to tell people where I
am on it.
