Are there plans to move the testsuite as well? Johan has asked to add
any suitable test files from SVG/renderer bug reports to the testsuite,
maybe it could help this process if both bug tracker and gsoc-testsuite
are hosted on launchpad...

I'm planning on us using the Backup and Migrate module for Drupal to back up the database regularly, and changes will have to be via the website (or for big things where you're sure you won't break anything, SQL queries). External version control is out with all (serious) content management systems as entirely unmanageable (I'm not aware of any CMS which has tried).

For the website, there are plans to move to a proper CMS (Drupal
specifically).

Django. Definitely Django. I've been working with it a fair bit recently (I'm using it for a major personal web-based commercial project) and it's far and away the best way to go with anything like that. It could also help with version control, being Python, as it would be easier to integrate with Bazaar which is also Python than something in another language. Then it'd just be make sure that Apache has mod_wsgi installed and installation is easy. Django's model system is ideal for this sort of purpose, and Django is much easier to work with, more powerful and more consistent than another MVC system. I've used several MVC systems in PHP and Django in Python, and just looking at that spec on the Wiki I'd say Django is really a very good fit.

Integration between the user, registration and comments applications and the extension-handling application would be fairly easy, and making meta-data models and things like that trivial. As for exposing an API for providing output serialised in any way, shape or form you feel like, it's easy with Django power.

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with the Django team in any way; I'm merely an ecstatic user who has after much experimentation found the best web framework that there is for speed, simplicity, power and just about any other benchmark you throw at it :-) (except for universal usability, it loses to PHP frameworks there most shared servers don't come with Python but do come with PHP. If you can get hold of Python though, you're safe).

I believe that SF.net provides this type of functionality for projects
now. You could use the inkscape project, but it'd probably be easier to
just start your own and JFDI the project. I don't have any web skillz
anymore, but I'm excited about the prospect. I regularly find
extensions I didn't know about (and are really cool).

As fore webpage repository, someone would have to install bzr client
on our server, if there is none currently, and edit the script that we
use to fetch data from repository to server accordingly. On the other
hand, wasn't there a plan to switch to a different CMS anyway? Can't
speak for other repositories.

This could make a good GSoC project, if nobody picks it before next
spring. Talking of perfomance, GEGL/babl team has started working on
multithreading recently (about two weeks), so using GEGL shouldn't be
slowing Inkscape (further) down soon.

My understanding is that this can be chosen at compile time by using
configure flags, though I have not attempted it myself.

None the less, if any effort is spent on that code it would probably be
to port it to GEGL rather than dealing with *magick.

Yeah! I'll see if I can clean up the GSoC branches a little once I have
upload bandwidth again. I think merging trunk into them would make
things much simpler.

I like "Fix Committed" meaning that it landed on trunk. And "Fix
Released" meaning that it's in a tarball. I keep pushing for the script
you're talking about there being a button in LP... hopefully it will be
soon-ish. Until then, I'm pretty sure such a script already exists.

Actually, probably most are not seeing it as it'll only come up with
newer versions of Bazaar.

When choosing the repository format I went very conservative. Upgrading
is pretty easy, but you can never go back. I figure we'd start tracking
this like a dependency as it basically determines what version of Bazaar
you have to have to be able to work on Inkscape. I'd like to keep that
barrier as low as possible.

That being said, the new Bazaar 2.0 format is really, really sweet. I
miss it already :) I hoping by the end of next year 2.0 will be common
enough that we can reasonably switch.

I'm going to talk to the Bazaar team about suppressing the warning, it
is annoying.

You need to use a path containing at least 50 characters if you plan to
package and *distribute* a version of Inkscape 0.47 (basically both when
built with X11 dependencies or as +quartz variant), for example like this:

/opt/local-macports-with-a-really-long-directory-name/

This is mentioned as prerequisite on the Wiki page and is necessary to
bundle Inkscape in such a way that version conflicts with installed
(system or MacPorts) libraries no longer can cause a crash or prevent
Inkscape from launching.

How did you install MacPorts (the 'port' command) for your first
'+quartz' tree?

Here the instructions on the Wiki page refer to:
1) you had downloaded the current tarball for MacPorts 1.x.x
2) unpacked it into a directory wherever it suited you to keep sources
of packages you compile yourself (the examples assumes in your home
directory aka '~')
3) 'cd' into the top-level directory of the unpacked MacPorts sources

Note: AFAIK if you used the DMG version of MacPorts (containing the Mac
OS X Package (.pkg) Installer), you need to download the tarball and
unpack the sources to re-configure and re-build the 'port' command for a
new location of the MacPorts tree.

See also the instructions 'Source Installation' at
<http://www.macports.org/install.php>

4) for the next steps (configure, build and install the 'ports'
command): make sure you use the correct path to the second tree
structure every time the default '/opt/local' is assumed.

'inkscape-0.47/packaging/macosx/osx-build.sh' is used to compile and
build Inkscape.app. It has nothing to do with the 'port' command which
is built and installed to use the MacPorts port management system (to
install all dependencies needed to build Inkscape).

The configure command you quoted above is executed in the top-level
directory of the unpacked tarball of the MacPorts sources, downloaded
from their website <http://www.macports.org/>, see my 'Note:' above.

at this point you seem to have used at least *three* different paths to
set up your second MacPorts tree:

1) "I created a /opt/local/x11 instead"
2) "./configure --prefix=/opt/local-native"
3) "created a /opt/x11/etc/macports/variants.conf"

You have to decide which one it is you prefer (please use one that is at
least 50 characters long) and stick to it in all relevant places - for
example you will also have to use it in the shell aliases you'll add to
'~/.bashrc' to switch between the different MacPorts trees.

Snipping the remaining questions and waiting for an update if above
comments helped to clarify some of the questions ;-)

Just fYI, I tried downloading both the .bz and .bz2 source packages, and in both cases, ark gave me an error saying something was wrong with the archive. Checking a copy out from SVN works fine, tho. This is on a Slackware 12.2 install.

compiling .47

Just curious, has anybody tried compiling 0.47 on Slackware 12.2? Is it possible, or will dependencies break something? Looks like I need to upgrade some GTK stuff to do it. I could go with Slack 13 (which I am guessing probably would work)...but I really hate KDE 4.0 and Gnome isn't an option (I hate it even more...).

When I saw this, I immediately went lookin' for a download. I've only played with the new version for a couple of hours...but from the looks of things, it TOTALLY ROCKS!!!!! Fantastic job, and thanks for making this wonderful piece of software available. I really appreciate the development team's efforts. I also appreciate that versions were available for all three platforms, Win, Mac, and Linux...tho looks like I will need to do a source compile on my linux box...or did I miss a precompiled binary somewhere? I didn't look too closely, I just grabbed the mac version and the portable Win version (thanks especially for that!). Meanwhile I can still use it on my mac and on Win at work.

Launchpad will automatically mark a bug "Fix Available" (rather than
"Fix Committed") once somebody commits using the flag --fixes, e.g.
bzr commit --fixes lp:123456 --fixes lp:123457 (if you fix those two
bugs in one commit). Then, bugs can be changed automatically from "Fix
Available" to "Fix Released"

Hey all,

I made the first commit on LP after our trunk branch was established and
it went smoothly. So, everyone, feel free to go to town!

As a side thought, since 0.48 will be maintained for a bit while 0.49 is
under development. What do people think about our use of LP and how we
use Fix Released rather than Fix Committed... are people game to perhaps
try using Fix Committed (and target them for 0.48 when doing so) for
this cycle? If we properly use committed and mark where it will be
available, we can then just script it to change to released when it
really is (I think it will be nicer for users). Just a thought.

need help: trying to compile 047 X11 for Tiger

Hello everybody,

people who asked me to compile 0.47 X11 for Tiger did probabely not
know what a bad idea that was - because things tend to be done much
faster by oneself than when teaching a complete ignorant is required… -

Nevertheless, I feel honoured by the request and regret having to
bother all you with another set of childish questions.

What I did up to now: I set up my machine and compiled 0.47 aqua, the
description given here:

Now I'd like to set up another tree for a X11 version, trying to

This is what the instructions say:

if anybody would be kind enough to give me further instructions on
the questions mentioned above, mainly in what way the osx-build-sh
can be part of it - I'd be grateful.

I'm currently branching locally, but assuming all goes well, we are back
in business!

Ted, when branching it comments with the following:
Format <RepositoryFormatKnit4> for
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/.bzr/ is
deprecated - please use 'bzr upgrade' to get better performance

Should we avoid doing that? Just figured I would ask since I'm assuming
that others will run into that message too.

The svg:svg node cannot be rotated, as it does not have a transform
attribute by SVG spec. It's a bug that Inkscape rendered the viewport
rotated after you added the transform attribute in XML editor, and it's
correct that the transformation gets discarded on file loading.

Thanks for the pointer. I used an alternate workaround that I
thought
might work --
Enter inkscape, uncheck "retrieve profile from display". I then
selected
'<none>', instead. Then quit inkscape from the menu and re-entered. My
preference
file was 'fixed with no loss of settings...
I didn't want to bother finding the pref file...:-) (lazy and
experimentative).

(sorry about lack of subject -- I thought I typed one in...but am new to
Win7, and
it seems to have a few problems...with things failing and going missing
randomly...)
(jumped from XP for the increase in memory in x64...)

Speaking of which...um x64... Going to be an inkscape version?
Would be
a nice 20-30% speed boost, likely given all the math it does...not to
mention having
extra memory to play in...

a) reset your preferences: Quit Inkscape, rename the file
'preferences.xml' [1] to 'preferences-crash.xml' and restart Inkscape
(you will loose all Inkscape settings you made earlier)
b) change only the display profile settings:
1. Open Inkscape preferences
2. In the color management section, un-check 'Retrieve profile
from display'
3. Restart Inkscape

[1] location of the preferences file: I only know the locations on XP
and Vista, but I assume Win7 will be similar to Vista (any windows user
here to clarify?)

I downloaded the latest and greatest and am having a problem.

I press shift-ctrl-d and it exits.

I also try document properties and I get an immediate exit.

I created 3 new windows, different types, and try document properties.

All of them go away -- no crash message -- something like an immediate exit.

Shows built Nov 21, 2009 (0.47)

I'm on Win7-64bit, but its only a 32bit client.

Am I alone in this? Some sort of corruption somehow?

It wasn't a random random version, the goal was to get 0.47 final in th 9.10 repo but the last major bug took longer than expected to be fixed (and obviously 9.10 got released first). We're going to attempt to see if they'll SRU it. Either way, we will have a ppa in the near future which will offer it for a few ubuntu releases.

feeling keeping my system updated may end up taking up more time than
actually using it... If the Ubuntu people aren't going to play ball on
this - and I think that they should really be offering major releases
or critical fixes only, not random beta versions - it'd be nice if you
could add an Inkscape repository to your sources list and bypass
Ubuntu for Inkscape. Obviously that would depend on whether the
Inkscape servers could take the extra load. It's a pity there isn't
some sort of combined bittorrent/repository system, where full
software upgrades are available via peer to peer.
