Install issue on Virtual Machine

I'm having trouble installing SAFS on a Virtual Machine.   It's setup with XP SP2, Java (java version "1.6.0_16" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_16-b01) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.2-b01, mixed mode, sharing)), and the Windows Scripting Engine.  The install runs, but I get errors about not being able to register the jar files in the classpath.  If I run just the STAF (2.6.11) install, I get "Errors occurred during the installation.  JVM not found."
I know there were past issues with this that were fixed in the installs, but apparently I've found a new variant or I've missed something along the way.

The issue here is caused by trying to install STAF 2.X using Java 1.6.  That will not work.  I am pushing a new release of SAFS today that will allow the install of the latest SAFS and supports the install of STAF V3.3.3.  However, it must be noted that RRAFS (SAFS for Rational Robot) has not been refactored to support STAF V3.  So RRAFS users will still need to install STAF V2 using Java 1.5.

See the updated Release Notes for the new release being pushed in just a couple of hours (or less):

http://safsdev.sourceforge.net/sqabasic2000/SAFSReleaseNotes2009.10.09.htm

Note the *** IMPORTANT NOTE *** in Critical Reminders:

While the latest SAFS and RFT support both STAF V2 and V3, other associated tools like RRAFS using Rational Robot have not been refactored to support STAF V3.  If you are using RRAFS you must continue to use and install STAF V2.

The AutomatedQA TestComplete tool has not been evaluated for its support of STAF V3 and may also need to continue using STAF V2. However, the DDVariableStore.DLL presumably used by TestComplete has been refactored to support both STAF V2 and V3.

And concerning STAF V2 and STAF V3:

STAF 2.6.11 and STAF 3.3.X and JAVA 1.6

SAFS can be installed to work with either STAF 2.6.11, or STAF 3.3.3 and above. However, note the following installation limitations below:

  • It is highly recommended to install and use STAF 3.3.X for new installations using RFT.
Support for STAF 2.X is only provided for scenarios requiring interaction with remote machines having STAF 2.X installed and for users still using IBM Rational Robot (RRAFS) which has not been refactored to support STAF V3.

  • STAF 2.6.11 requires Java 1.4 or Java 1.5 to install.  STAF 2.6.11 will NOT successfully install using Java 1.6 or later.
However, STAF 2.6.11 can use Java 1.6 AFTER it has been successfully installed with an older version of Java.
Most machines do NOT have earlier versions of Java installed.  If you intend to install STAF 2.6.11 and do not have Java 1.5 on your machine then you will have to download and install Java 1.5 from the Sun Java Archives.

  • STAF 3.3.X can successfully install and run with Java 1.6 as well as earlier and later versions of Java.
It is highly recommended to install and use STAF 3.3.X for new installations not using Rational Robot.
Support for STAF 2.X is only provided for scenarios requiring interaction with remote machines having STAF 2.X installed and for users still using IBM Rational Robot (RRAFS) which has not been refactored to support STAF V3.
