Has anyone tried installing SPSS 18 under vista.  Then Installing Windows 7 and  then reinstalling reinstalling SPSS on the same machine?

Did you encounter any problems?

I thought you didn’t have to uninstall applications when migrating from Vista to Windows 7?

It seems to depend what versions are involved. I have Vista Ultimate, but Windows 7 Home Premium.  I am trying to decide whether to spend another $150 to go to the Windows 7 Ultimate so I can avoid a "custom install".
If your current edition of Windows Vista can't be upgraded to the edition of Windows 7 that you want to use, you can still install Windows 7 by using the Custom installation option instead. However, the Custom option doesn't preserve your files, programs, or settings.

I was wondering about the difficulty of re-installing SPSS because the licensing s/w might think it had already been installed on a machine. Or does the licensing s/w know it is the same physical machine?

You can always depend on Microsoft to make things really complicated (sigh).

I listened to a NYT TechTalk podcast about Windows 7 which led me to believe it’s not worth the hassle to upgrade now from Vista home premium (which is what I have). I’d think that you could probably relicense a completely new install with your activation code. Let’s hope somebody from SPSS Tech Support will chime in here.

depends on the versions - there is a table somewhere to show what in-place upgrades are available (and a download advisor that will check your machine as to what upgrade options you have) - I went from Vista 64 bit ultimate to win 7 ultimate via an in place install - not run spss other than to start it - seems okay - BUT for example you cant go from ultimate to premium etc ...
