A list of rare birds is placed on the home page with the location of the rarity and most recent date of observation. This is updated several times per day. This is a handy tool for anyone making a birding trip or otherwise into the state of Iowa. ************************ Species in ALL CAPS can be classified into three categories in the state of Iowa: 1) UNRECORDED, ACCIDENTAL or Casual; 2) A RARE but regular species; or 3) record early or late date or unusual for time of year. Any species with three asterisks (***species***) would represent a first record for Iowa (UNRECORDED) and should be observed and documented very carefully. Species with two asterisks (**species**) are species that are either ACCIDENTAL, CASUAL, or a rare regular species, and should also be documented. Species with one asterisk (*species) should have some details of the observation provided. NORTH CENTRAL: CERRO GORDO COUNTY: A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen at Clear Lake on the 6th. 2 were present on the 8th. 3 were present on the 11th around the state beach. WRIGHT COUNTY: A juvenile PACIFIC LOON was seen at Lake Cornelia on the 7th. HANCOCK COUNTY: A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen along a fencerow on the 11th. EAST: JOHNSON COUNTY: A RED-THROATED LOON was seen on Coralville Lake on the 11th. Specifically, it was seen along the north side of Mahaffey Bridge, along the shoreline of the pines. The adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continues at Scales Pointe at the Hawkeye WA, and was last seen on the 11th. NORTHEAST: ALLAMAKEE COUNTY: 3 GOLDEN EAGLES were seen along Army Rd near New Albin on the 8th. A LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen from the levee on the south end of pool 9 (the pool north of Harpers Ferry) on the 8th. SOUTHEAST: LOUISA COUNTY: 16 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen in a large grassy field on the Turtle Bend Wildlife Area 2 miles east of Wapello on the 11th. They were in the middle of a field dominated by Virginia wild rye and foxtail on the east side of 114th Avenue. SOUTH CENTRAL: MARION COUNTY: 2 WESTERN GREBES were seen at Red Rock on the 7th. CENTRAL: POLK COUNTY: A PACIFIC LOON was seen at Saylorville near marina cove on the 8th. This bird was last seen on the 11th. Highlights from Saylorville on the 10th included 1 SURF SCOTER, 1 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, 3 BLACK SCOTERS, a juvenile RED-THROATED LOON, and a juvenile PACIFIC LOON. A LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen at Saylorville on the 11th. WEST: POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY: An immature GOLDEN EAGLE was seen at the Hitchcock Hawkwatch on the 7th. 2 GOLDEN EAGLES and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK were seen at the Hitchcock Hawkwatch on the 9th. NORTHWEST: DICKINSON COUNTY: 2 juvenile BLACK SCOTERS were seen at Spirit Lake on the 7th.
