I assume when you say "MIT SIMILE", you are referring to the SIMILE Exhibit project. The open-source community this project was migrated to can be found here:
I suggest you look at the code that knits data into a Timeline or Google Maps. This will give you an idea of how easy/difficult it is to code _your_ integration. It's hard to answer your question without an idea of what the data looks like or what tool you want to use to create the heat-map. (The screenshot is of Microsoft Maps, but you didn't mention if that is your intended target.)
