Is this a California Gull?All:
A California Gull has been reported nesting in a Western Gull colony off the coast of southern California (Anacapa Island). Since this would be unprecedented, some people are questioning the id. I think it may be OK although the wing-tip pattern looks wrong the structure seems more robust than typical. I would be especially interested if someone familiar with the calls of CAGU (I am ashamed to say I am not, even though I see them most days, since I have never bothered to learn subtle vocalization differences between large gulls) could comment if the calls in the video below confirm/eliminate CAGU. Here is a video of the gull (with vocalizations): http://youtu.be/sYklxwUjWS4 I have some additional photos in my possession but I am not sure they add much to what one can see in the video. Re: Is this a California Gull?My first skeptical question would be is it actually nesting, and second what
does the mate look like? Re: Is this a California Gull?It certainly looks right for a California Gull to me. My question is
why is it referred to as a hybrid on youtube? Re: Is this a California Gull?Nick et al.:
Like Nick, I did not really get vocal distinctions down for CAGU when I saw them frequently. However, the bird has the strongly turned-down gape (frowning aspect) typical of CAGU and wrong (or at least atypical) for nearly everything with which the species might be confused. Thanks to Michael O'Brien for putting my impressions of that character into words.
