John,

Did you download the GeoCities based Rhodes site (http://www.geocities.com/blew_skies/)?  We will need to be able to replicate it (host it locally) since Yahoo is pulling the plug this month (It's time to say good-bye to GeoCities http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-10370193-2.html )

I downloaded the webpages just in case.  It's only 4.5mb.  For the time being (until the material can be rearranged) can we just create a copy on your server and link locally instead of to geocites.com?

Yes, I already have a copy saved on the server.  I will update links
shortly when I get a spare minute or two.  Hopefully we will continue
on without missing GeoCities at all.

Cheers!

GeoCities.com is officially dead and I think I have most (if not all)
of the "Blew Skies" site saved on rhodes22.org.  Page links have been
changed so you probably won't see much difference.  However, I haven't
gone thru all the pages or run a link checker to see if I missed
anything.  If you see any problems with that part of the website,
please let me know ASAP.

Cheers!

John,

Thank you for your work on the Geosites.  I for one have spent many hours
reviewing and still refer to that site for info.  Have you installed the
lift yet?  We've been in FL for several weeks now and have spent much time
with our R-22 sailing in the gulf.

John,
You mean that you are reinstalling the front ports? How wild is that.
Rodger spent many hours glassing them over so you couldn't tell they were even
there and now your reinstalling them. I can't wait to tell him. Be sure to
post  pictures as you progress. It might be invaluable for many on the list.

I wish I could glass over my front port openings.  They're never opened and all they do is leak when it rains...

FYI, we open ours every time we are at anchor except when it's
raining. The only time they leak is if we don't get them closed
properly. They do seem a little tricky to close properly. Are the
ports leaking where they open or do they need to be rebedded? I think
some people have fixed ports in the same location. Because we do a
fair number of overnights, I'm glad we have the opening ports.

Yep, I can imagine how many hours Rodger put into that.  You can't
tell from the outside, but the inside is kinda ugly.  Besides that I
just needed to get more light into the cabin.  Biggest complaint my
wife has about staying aboard.  Should be a challenging project to
keep me occupied this winter.

Cheers!

Bob,
Open the ports, clean the gasket that goes around the window and clean the
outside layer of the window. This should rejuvenate the seal and then close
the  windows so they are tight. A dirty seal leaks every time. Mine don't
leak at  all.

Good idea because they leak where they open.  My solution has been to just keep them covered with the canvas covers.

Bob,

My recycled boat already had opening ports and Stan recommended that I change them out for closed ports.  I didn't want to spend the money, wanted the ventilation, and figured I could change them if they started leaking.  I should have listened to Stan.  I never use them for ventilation.

A fellow Rhodie lost one of her covers when the Genoa sheet yanked it off and the same thing almost happened to me, so I started putting the covers on and off everytime I went out.  What a hassle.  After several hundred on-and-offs the snaps broke.  Now I leave the covers off but have to sponge out the ports everytime it rains.

Interesting, they're the only ports that don't leak.

I like Art's idea about sealing the ports with silicone.  It seems like it would work but if it does, why does everyone reset leaking windows?

Good idea because they leak where they open.  My solution has been to just keep them covered with the canvas covers.

Lee,

You asked "It seems like it would work but if it does, why does everyone
reset leaking windows?"

You have provided the answer within your question - it doesn't work.
Silicone sealant is best used as a gasket material, requiring some
compression to achieve a good seal.  Rebedding with the proper sealant is
the proper method.

If I've learned one thing in boating (and most cases involving sealing out
water) there are very few shortcuts that work for any length of time.

Mike,

I figured as much.  It works on my bathtub, which some would say is similar to a Rhodes, but probably wouldn't work for long if my bathtub took the same pounding abuse.

Thanks!

Lee

Mike,

I wonder if anyone has attempted to ask the manufacturer about the availability of replacement window gaskets.  Rebedding the entire window is quite a job.  If I were to rebed, I would probably move the opening ports to the side window positions and move two of the side to the front.  Anyone done this?  I'd think the dimensions are the same.

I'm thinking about this as I watch our seven-month old granddaughter adjust the windows of her playstation in our living room.  I call her Curious Georgette, although really Mira, a beautiful little miracle.

Lee,

Replacing/fabricating the snap-on window cover is no big deal, but water still gets underneath.

Stan has posted that the two front side windows are the only difficult ones for achieving a successful rebed, due to the compound curves of the mounted surface.  I have contemplated a few new windows, maybe the back four, on Mary Jane, anticipating about $90 per.  Who can estimate the probable time for a window changeout and the tools suggested?

Art

Art,

There have been several posts over the years on how to replace the ports.
Best that a person can do is about one port in a day. The process of
removing  the port involves numerous putty knives and wood or plastic shims and a
lot of  patience and persistence. Once the port is removed, the clean up
begins which  can take several hours to remove the old sealant. This is not a
project I would  look forward to. Personally, I prefer the front opening
ports. When properly  closed, mine do not leak and that's after being in there
for twenty years.
The problem with the side opening ports has to do with cabin space when
they are opened and who is going to bang there head against them first. Side
ports give little or no added ventilation, especially if the pop top is
open. If  you anchor from the bow, the front ports will provide much needed air
down  below.
The rains have finally subsided and my football game doesn't begin until
4:15  so I'm going to blow everything else off today and go out sailing.
It's currently 55 degrees and winds out of the north at 3, climbing to 8 by
noon. See ya all later.

Lee,

Replacing/fabricating the snap-on window cover is no  big deal, but water
still gets underneath.

Stan has posted that  the two front side windows are the only difficult
ones for achieving a  successful rebed, due to the compound curves of the
mounted surface.  I  have contemplated a few new windows, maybe the back four, on
Mary Jane,  anticipating about $90 per.  Who can estimate the probable time
for a  window changeout and the tools suggested?

the  ventilation, and figured I could change them if they started leaking.  I
should have listened to Stan.  I never use them for ventilation.

out the ports everytime it rains.

Earlier this year it was pointed out that the only side windows you
can realistically replace with opening ports is the aft-most pair.
There is a slight curve in the cabin top forward of that and if you
torque down an opening port over that non-flat surface they will
certainly leak.  There was brief discussion of making shims to go
under the mounting flange to achieve a really flat surface, but this
really sounded like more trouble than it was worth.  Consensus was
only attempt it on the aft-most pair and make your surface prep
meticulous.

Cheers!
