JXGlassBox: drop it!

obviously still playing in the demos :-)

Last week Karl pointed me to his usage of JXGlassBox as the swingx-internal replacement of the original (to swingset3) Stacker for showing the animated loading message screen of the table demo. Cool idea, as we want chew as much of our own dog food. So tried to implement a visual clue - kind of overlay - of highlighting the taskpane as demo selector: while the details are not important, it forced me to try and understand what the glassbox is for and how's it supposed to work. Didn't succeed only found a couple of issues ;-)

which led me the evaluation:
"JXGlassBox is a very old implementation of a mix of unrelated behaviours (show something in the glasspane, some hard-coded animation of an arbitrary property) which aren't working at all or not reliably. Would need lots of work to cleanup, much would be duplication (of JXLayer functionality). So my preference would be to drop it altogether."

Project migrations?

Just wondering what this story about Sun shutting down Collabnet (among other things) means for Swinglabs? see http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/07/sun_layoffs_motivation/ esp. the last paragraph which states:

"its up to Sun's individual project teams to put their code on the system rather wait for the engineers building Kenai to make the move. "

I know the register isn't the most reliable nor Java friendly source but it does seem to reflect how things have been going recently.. If so what about the forums? has anyone from Sun mentioned this? wondering what the timescale is going to be.

SwingX and SwingX-WS available as pre-cooked NetBeans Platform artifacts

Just to tell you that at the NetBeans Platform Wrapper Repository
(NetBeans PoWeR - http://nbpwr.kenai.com/) I've prepared two NBM
artifacts for the latest SwingX and SwingX-WS releases; people using
SwingX from inside a NetBeans Platform application won't have to
re-create a wrapper on their own. While NetBeans PoWer is an
experimental initiative, that I'm mostly running for my own needs, the
idea is to possibly have it as an official resource for others - or it
could be a precursor to an official initiative for the NetBeans Community.

An alternate (and IMO better) approach for SwingLabs could be this: when
and if SwingX has been completely moved to Maven, the required POM for
generating NBM artifacts could be added to the SwingX project itself, so
SwingLabs would provide directly these artifacts. I could maintain the
relevant part of the POM, if the SwingLabs community accepts this
contribution.

I'm not sure yet, what causes the problem and if its a bug in my code, in Glazed Lists or in SwingX.

Maven sources jar defect

Thanks a lot for the SwingX 1.6 release.
Unfortunately, it seems like the sources.jar deployed to the Maven repository is defect (as well as that for 1.0 is).

Seems like there is a single space in front of the 'org' (i.e. ' org') that's why the source is not recognized in Eclipse/m2eclipse

graphics.GraphicsUtilities.createThumbnail() : cannot create thumb from PNG

Hello,

I've recently discovered the awesomeness of SwingX in general, and am having troubles with one feature specifically:
- org.jdesktop.swingx.graphics.GraphicsUtilities.createThumbnail(BufferedImage image, int newSize)

[b]My environment:[/b]
- SwingX 1.6 (just tested today to see if it fixed the problem ... nope)
- Java JDK 1.6.0_13
- Resin HTTP server 3.1.9 (not that this is relevant)

[b]My problem:[/b]
The "createThumbnail" function seems to work for everything but PNG files. As you can guess, I'm using this in the "add photo" backend of a website, and creating a thumb is pretty useful, and my client ... well, let's just say if I asked him to convert the file to a JPG it would take an hour to show him how to do this.
The function doesn't throw any errors, it just never generates the thumb. I did get it to generate a thumb for PNG once, but I had to drop the file to 8-bit, and the thumb was riddled with horizontal lines.

If anyone can give me a trick to make PNGs work like other images, I'd be very grateful. Currently my solution is to simple deny PNGs from uploading.

Jan was planning on Mavenizing SwingX once we moved to 1.6. I don't know the latest, but the preliminary pom files exist in the SwingX repo. He is using them in the Maven-backed Hudson build on swinglabs.org. I haven't looked at them, so I don't know what the exact state of Mavenization is.

thanks for trying :-) And yeah, agreed, I think there's a bug somewhere but stilll can't point to where exactly. Could make some progress with calling multisplit.layoutByWeight but only if the was added to the CENTER of the demoContainer. Base context needs it at LINESTART which results in everthing going nuts (the plain version as well) - there seems to be a problem with editor and BorderLayout ...

So I gave up entirely on BorderLayout and switched to FormLayout, good that can do that in the demos <g> The effected class in swingxset6 is LoadedXDemoPanel which extends JXTitledPanel. Nothing special to do if there is no description, simply set the demo as its contentContainer. FormLayout comes into play if we have a description:

with that, I don't even have to listen for text loading ready: magically, all comes out correctly.

One slight glitched: we have to call layoutWithDescription not only initially but in updateUI as well - reason being that the BasicTitlePaneUI enforces a BorderLayout and adds the titleBar NORTH. Technically, we could enhance by only enforcing the BorderLayout if of type UIResource, always add to top with constraint NORTH and expecting a custom manager to map to whatever makes sense. As I'm not sure if the current handling is overly limiting for normal use cases - after all, here it's stretched .. - won't go for it.

I could volunteer for mavenizing SwingX-WS (after a deeper analysis of
the project structure). My point is political, I mean it's part of
SwingX and any decision to go that way should be a global decision of
the community.

My experience with maven is that it sucks to set up, but once it's working it works. Thus I have no interest in mavenizing the project myself, but once mavenized I'd be happy to use it. :)

[Appframework]: how to keep super from pack()'ing initially?

the concrete frame in question - surprise, surprise :-) - it the mainframe of the SwingXSet: the layout still isn't clean enough to survive a pack. And don't intend to go for the real reason just now, still hoping the _real_ solution will drop out of the sky (which occasionally happens with layout probs). The original version in SwingSet3 side-stepped any problems by ...horror: freely setting preferredSizes and null layout.

This is a problem only in the very first run of the app, later the size/location is restored from persisted session state. A quick fix was to manually size the frame always - which wasn't a solution at all because it short-cuts the restored values. Now I came up with something looking extremely dirty: override configureWindow, pack, set a reasonable enough initial size and validate:

I hate to say that - but after a few days a new build was triggered on Hudson and was ok. I hate to see that a thing started working without and explicit fix, but that's life. BTW, yes, I realized I updated the build scripts. Which BTW seems to be a bit messy... what point is the discussion at about Mavenizing SwingX? :-)

I'm going to guess that you updated the build scripts with NetBeans
and it requested some new version of JUnit. The immediate solution is
to revert. Are you sure the diff below is your entire change?

SwingX-Demos: call for JXMonthView custom navigation extensions

a while ago I wrote a post about Madonna's underwear:

These days, I added a slightly more accessible version to the swinglabs demo to play with plugging in custom trousers (read: Highlighters and navigation headers in zoomable mode). See the "JXMonthView (extended)" demo page when running

it's clearly visible (and a well known fact since ages ;-) that I'd starve if I had to earn my living as a visual designer - particularly the default "spinnable" header is _ugly_

So, I would like to nudge the one or other developer to contribute their versions: for starters, I could add them as a configuration option to the demos so that we all can play with them. And maybe later add to swingx itself.

I have removed all dependencies on the backport. The code compiles and runs without it. I'm guessing it's an artifact of the old POM file.

Jan, can you please update the POM file to remove the backport?

Yeah it is, I wasn't showing an arrow in that case.

So basically I'll have to grab that part of the old swingx 1.0 code to get custom icons working again. No biggie.
But, I don't suppose a feature request for showing the sort arrow + a custom icon in a column header cell was already on the list of things to do? There's that nasty limitation of JLabels only supporting a single icon.

In theory that could be worked around by having something like:

not an error, it's a feature: the only reason for having the custom renderer was to support sort icons (the enhanced configuration never really worked in the general case for several reasons) which is done in core now.

grab the old code and install in your header - but beware: there are issues as java6 sort icons are placed as the icon in the label (last time I looked), so your custom icons most probably clash with that.

Only one error here though which occurs when replacing swingX 1.0 with 1.6
