thanks again for your time.

The CF is activated inside the old instance, but it is definitly not copied over by the backup (i just tried it again), or at least
it is not shown under "Custom Fields".

Although this CF seems to be 10030, not 10011 (i did what you suggested to get the number inside the link).
1011 leads to a *Screen* called "Impediment Create Screen" that also exist inside the new instance...

Now i actually have no clue what is wrong... Integrity checker passed everything, no problems detected, the
screen looks similar on both instances...

The field should indeed exist in the backup. However, if a field is deleted, Jira doesn't remove any filters that might have been using it!

If it does exist, then you should check what type the field is too - it may be that the field exists in the data, but the plugin that provides the code for it is either disabled (in both old and new) or non-existent in the new Jira. Have a look at Admin -> Plugins to check that.

To find a field, go to Admin -> custom fields, and hover the cursor over the edit links next to each one (or use the browser to show the xml), you'll find that the url that the links go to contain the custom field id (10011)

Another thing to try is the integrity checker - it might highlight some data problems. I usually run it before exporting, to get the cleanest xml I can, but it's just as good to run it after import too, especially if upgrading. Concentrate on the field related things it can check.

ahh thanks for the hint that it is a "custom field"...

Ok, i think the association and the custom field problem are different things, since
the issues work if i don't use crowd, but the cf-problem is always there (with or without
crowd).

Cf-Problem:
The old instance has one additional CF that seems to be missing on the new instance... so
i guess that this is "1011" (where can i see the number?). Shouldn't this be restored through
the XML-Backup? Or do i have to copy it over (if yes, how?)?

Issue-Association Problem:
I tried to reinstall everything, but i always get the same results as noted above.
As soon as i use crowd, the Groups are shown twice and no association is made
between the old and new user (or at least with the Issues, strange thing: it can see
that i am project lead of some projects and the projects are shown, but no Issues...).

You can't - Jira doesn't store the password. It stores the salt and hash, so you will need to change it rather than find it out.
# Did you set an email for your admin user? If so, just use the "forgot password" link and check the email.
# If not, then run this

I admit I hadn't looked at hosting, never needed to. Interesting to read all of that, thanks!

>With respect, you did not actually answer my question about disable startups through some other means than the Web UI.
True, sorry. I don't think that there is.

>What I want is to disable the plugins I KNOW I don't need, before starting the VM, so that when JIRA tries to load "everything it may need", the definition of "everything" is somewhat reduced! For instance given our business case we are NEVER going to need anything to do with the Fisheye plugin - so why should we spend money on Heap Space for this plugin?
I think you've got two options.
# Remove the .jar file from WEB-INF/lib - that will completely and permanently stop the plugin loading. Probably ok for the Fisheye plugin and others, but I'd test any of the off-the-shelf plugin removals to check they don't have dependencies that break.
# Go into the database and disable the plugin before starting Jira.

If you do decide to jump back to Jira, ask again - I don't have the SQL for disabling the plugins off the top of my head.

How to migrate current jira setup (osuser with AD/LDAP) to crowd (AD/LDAP)?

hello community,

i recently updated Jira from 3.x to Jira 4 and imported the XML-backup.

So far everything works fine, but now we tried to change the current LDAP
authentication to work with Crowd... so we followed the tutorial how to
integrate Jira&Crowd and it seems to work for the authentication part.

I can now log in with my AD user BUT i can't access any of my issues,
filters or projects... the user has the same name as it had bevore and this
procedure worked at least for Confluence (the new AD-User was associated with
the old local one smoothly there). If i deactivate "external user management" eyerthing
works as expected with the old user (it's a different password so i can distinguish).
So far i think there is some problem with association of the Crowd-AD users to the
old authentication (local+LDAP).

The only errors i can provide:
1) if i log on to my dashboard, i see in filter results gadget:
{code}
There are problems with the current configuration for this gadget.
The errors below may have been caused by the deletion of entities required by the
gadget or by changes to your permissions.

The selected filter filter-10000 has an error: Not able to sort using field 'cf[10011]'..

{code}

All other gagdets show: "No matching issues found." which is naturally wrong ;)

2) The three necessary groups in JIRA are listed twice... i can see two jira-users, jira-developers and
jira-administrators groups but in both is only the testuser (me) i added in AD. In AD there is only one
group called like this, so i expect it also shows the local one with the same name but still uses Crowd
to check (sounds weird i know)... otherwise one of the groups should hold all old users, eh?

Any idea what i can do to get this right?

That would work. You can also just add yourself to the internal-admin group since you don't know who else is in jira-administrators and it is probably setup this way for a reason. Either way, both should work.

By default, jira-administrators group should have JIRA System Administrators permission, but your JIRA might be setup differently. You can check this by going to Administration -> Global Permissions. You need that permission to set SMTP server I believe.

Thanks for your reply Nic.

Selling a VM with a limited max heap size (-Xmx) is exactly what they are doing. If you google "private tomcat hosting" you will find that all the tomcat hosting providers do it.
In fact, while it may +seem+ odd that they charge for heap memory, in fact it is a reasonable way to cost the whole server resource, when you think about it. With a PHP app + Apache HTTPD for instance, they can run many sites each for a different customer and the average memory will tend towards the average number of total users. Given that bursts in on app may correspond to troughs in another, they can estimate the capacity they need to offer with some degree of success.

Now, with Java VMs, they need to provide that VM with at least its necessary size (VM + Permgen + Heap = some 100 MB more than just -Xmx) at all times, even if those apps are not heavily loaded or have no users. Otherwise, the VMs will be thinking they have enough memory, allocating up to the VM limit, but this will correspond to a page fault and cause the O/S to be constantly swapping the contents of physical RAM in from disk, which could lead the machine to thrash.

So what I am really paying for is "a block of internet-addressable and secured JVM heap space with attached CPU and disk space, and a secure power-supply". The charge per lump of heap space starts to look more reasonable.

Regarding JIRA's behaviour on startup ("tries to load everything it may need"), that is what I had suspected. With respect, you did not actually answer my question about disable startups through some other means than the Web UI.

For the moment I have set up Mantis (http://www.mantisbt.org/) which is a fairly blatant copy of JIRA in terms of functionality and concepts, although currently far inferior as a product. I would much prefer JIRA but since the hosting provider offers Mantis at no extra charge so this way we save at least USD50 a month in hosting fees. Later on if/when the venture is successful we may justify this expenditure but not at the moment.

It sounds odd to me that someone would charge based on heap size. My guess is that they are charging you for running a virtual machine with limited memory. But that's beside the point.

I do not think that there is a useful answer to your question. Jira tries to load everything on startup, simply because it might need all of it. If your memory settings prevent it all being loaded, then the simple response is that you haven't got enough memory. Yes, it spikes on startup, but for most installations, you will find that the memory peaks are based on what the users are doing, and it's much higher than the startup. So, if you are having problems running through startup, you are almost certainly going to have operational problems when people start using it.

If I were in your place, I'd simply be asking the providers to increase the memory - my users are going to need more than the system startup does.

I have been using and administering JIRA for several years, however always on decent-sized local servers.

I am now trying to set up another instance (JIRA 4.0) for a hobby project (a fanzine whose editors are all over the world), as I think it will be a very easy-to-learn tool for the rest of the team. Since we are trying to keep costs down initially I am trying to use a 3rd-party hosted private Tomcat JVM with a JIRA 10-user licence. Private Tomcat tends to come out cheaper than a whole VPS package.

However I have run into a severe problem with JIRA's initial requirements at initial startup. It requires at least 96Mb of Heap just to start the webapp, and then more than that the first time you access a page after startup. My experience of running it on local servers is that ONCE STARTED UP JIRA 3.x can run happily inside 128Mb, while JIRA 4.0 needs maybe 200Mb. This perfectly reasonable for a local server.

However all specialist Tomcat hosting providers base their pricing on heap size so it looks like we are going to have to go way over budget just to deal with this initial "burst" of heap requirements at startup.

One idea I had was to disable all the plugins we don't need (gadgets, RPC, fisheye, basically most of them) via the CLI, +before+ starting up. I suspect this would reduce footprint as the app is tending to bail with an OutOfMemoryError exactly when it is loading the plugins.

I couldn't find anything in the docs about this - does anyone know how? I am reluctant to simply start removing JAR files as in 4.0 there are so many bundled plugins with apparent interdependencies that I think it will get messy and I can find no clear documentation about how to do this safely.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Jira mail handler - Truncated tickets in Jira

Hi,

We have come across an error that we are not sure how to solve.

We are using Enterprise Edition, Version: 3.13-#330

We are using the Jira Extendable Mail Handler to create issues based on incoming emails for a number of different projects, and it is all working well. Tickets are created without any problem.
We are using the @ prefix format when configuring the emails.

Our problem is that when the lenght of the entered value is too long the whole ticket becomes truncated in Jira. It is difficult to find a pattern. Sometimes the entered value is simply cust short. Other times, only half of the fields are filled out and the rest will just appear in basic html.

I have attached a screenshot where you can see how some of the tickets are entered in Jira and the rest appear as html with the @prefix.

Any help or sugestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.

Although the improvement request is still outstanding, there is a workaround, which Nic didn't mention. That is the ability to exclude certain resolutions on each transition (which is part of an individual workflow).

http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA03x/Resolutions+per+workflow+step
http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Resolutions+per+workflow+step

It's a workaround, and its biggest flaw is that because it is a list by exclusion, if anyone adds a new resolution, it will be default be INCLUDED in all workflows.

I wrote a custom field to do this (in 3.6) - it showed the difference between "resolution date" (from the charting plugin) and "due date".

If you had something like that, then you could do a simple filter that displays the last months worth of issues, and sort by that field.

I have been asked to prepare a monthly, project-wise report based on the due-date : the number of issues that were fixed before the due-date versus the number that were not.

Whats the best way of doing this?

Am facing the exact same error. My project has a custom jira plugin which works fine with Jira 3.x.
However it fails with Jira 4. We use axis 1.4, but the error is reproducible with axis 1.3 also.

Plugin's Wsdl from jira 3 and jira 4 are identical.

Within the "loads of projects" structure, I think I would look at the functions in the [clone and move|http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRAEXT/JIRA+Clone+and+Move+Plugin] plugin. You'll need to do some work on it though (see weaknesses)

*Strengths*
* It enables a user to create a copy of an issue
* linked to the current one
* in another project.
* It duplicates the main information entered, removing the history and comments

*Weaknesses*
* I don't know how well it handles components and/or versions (it didn't when I last used it, but that was a long time ago)
* I don't think it lends itself to bulk transitions
* It's not supported for V4

Having mentioned those weaknesses, I suspect you could use it as a base for however you decide to do it.

One thing I'd consider given your requirements is implementing the option to "create in other project" as a transition within your workflow (even if it goes back to the same status the issue was in before). You could then put the "clone" activity into a post-function. You'd need to think about how to decide which project to clone something into, but post-functions are relatively easy to write, and you'd get the bulk-edit option automatically!
