Salary: £28,839 to £35,469 (with a discretionary range from £36,532 to £38,757) http://www.csm-oxford.org.uk Applications are invited for the post of medical statistician to join the NHS Support Team of the Centre for Statistics in Medicine (Director: Professor Doug Altman) in Oxford. The support team provides expert statistical input into collaborative health research. Projects include phase II-III national and international randomised controlled trials and observational studies. The statistician typically collaborates directly with the lead researcher, taking responsibility for the design, analysis and clear interpretation in public dissemination whilst working to agreed deadlines. Some projects are in collaboration with a UKCRN Registered Clinical Trials Unit. The support team also carry out methodological research, offer statistical advice to researchers and run statistical courses. The NHS support team is mainly funded by the NHS and funding committees covering all health leading to a variety of diseases within their projects. The NHS support team is one of two such teams at the Centre for Statistics in Medicine, the other being the CR-UK support team. These two teams include 10 statisticians in total with a further 6 statisticians employed in the Centre. The Centre carries out collaborative medical research projects, a methodological research programme and teaching. Members of the Centre have a particular interest in randomised controlled trials, diagnostic accuracy studies and prognostic studies. The Centre is part of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Oxford and is located in an attractive site at Wolfson College in North Oxford. You would be expected to provide major input into a number of concurrent collaborative projects as the primary statistician and would deal directly with the multi-disciplinary project team. You would also be expected to teach on an annual course for clinicians and scientists. The successful applicant is likely to have a postgraduate qualification in applied or medical statistics, and several years relevant experience working as a medical statistician. Located in a stimulating statistical environment with career enhancement encouraged by CPD and opportunities for methodological research, this post is offered on a full time basis (although part time would be considered), and is available immediately for three years. Thanks, Rafael --------- Medical Statistician/Epidemiologist DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY HEALTH CARE, Oxford Centre for Monitoring and Diagnosis in Primary Care Grade 7: Salary 28,839 - 35,469 p.a. The Department of Primary Health Care at the University of Oxford is seeking to appoint a Medical Statistician/Epidemiologist to work with the Oxford Centre for Monitoring and Diagnosis (MaDOx). The Oxford Centre for Monitoring and Diagnosis in Primary Care is a research programme funded by the National Institute for Health Research. It has attracted over 3.5m in funding which is being used to study the monitoring of chronic diseases in primary care, including the monitoring of patients on anticoagulation therapy and conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, diabetes and asthma. With increasing numbers of patients with chronic diseases, more research is needed into how to monitor these to ensure that patients are receiving the optimal treatment. The centre is also funded to increase diagnostic accuracy and efficiency aiming to identify important problems in the way diagnoses are made in primary care, improve the use of existing techniques, and develop new technologies. The centre also works alongside the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction review group, and so this position would be ideal for a statistician or statistical epidemiologist with interest and expertise in any or all of the following areas: * Multivariate modelling * Longitudinal modelling with fixed and random effects * Meta-analysis The post will be funded for three years in the first instance. The postholder will work under the supervision of the University Research Lecturer in Medical Statistics, Dr Richard Stevens. We intend to make an appointment at Grade 7 but if no suitably qualified candidates are found, an appointment at Grade 6 (25,623 - 30,594 p.a.) may be made, with an appropriate change in the duties. The postholder will be expected to provide statistical leadership and support to a multidisciplinary team of researchers within the centre. Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent experience e.g. a publications record) in a related subject with experience in medical statistics and/or epidemiology. The successful applicant will possess the ability to manage and organise research programmes, working both independently and as part of a growing team. Excellent interpersonal and highly developed IT skills are also important for this position.
