Re: Java 2 SE 6, Access Bridge, Windows 7 and 64 bit platforms?I hope you receive more response than I did to your questions. I was not able to get the JAB to function on a 64-bit Vista system. Since I posted my query twice to this list, and no one responded, I can only assume that nobody has a working instance of the JAB on a 64-bit Vista system. I am perplexed as to why no one from Sun Microsystems has bothered to inform us regarding a very simple question, namely, is 64-bit Vista supported?

Re: Java 2 SE 6, Access Bridge, Windows 7 and 64 bit platforms?Yep. Failing to support current versions of Windows will force
me to abandon Java swing for GUI implementations. As a developer, I have
other options for future projects, but it automatically renders our existing
products obsolete. For starters, I need to post a note on our MathTrax website
to the effect that access is not supported for 64-bit systems. We are
well over 250,000 downloads at this point, and some of those folks are going to
be unpleasantly surprised when they upgrade to a 64-bit OS. Dr.

Re: Java 2 SE 6, Access Bridge, Windows 7 and 64 bit platforms?G'day Peter and all,
I'm really hoping Sun will consider making a 64 bit version available soon. From where I'm sitting there appears to be no valid reason for not doing it. I'm pondering if we are going to be left behind as the world moves ever so towards 64 bit platforms being common place. One reason why I was giving W7 a serious look was for the fact I'd be able to take advantage of a larger memory footprint. Though this becomes a mute point if I'm not able to then do my work because of limitations imposed through the lack of reasonable accessibility options. Cheers. Using the Java Access Bridge on 64-bit Windows [was Re: Java 2 SE 6, Access Bridge, Windows 7 and 64 bit platforms?]
Dear Robert, and the folks on the java-access mailing list,
I am writing to confirm to you that the existing 32-bit Java Access Bridge version 2.0.1 does work on 64-bit Vista, and I would expect it also would work with Windows 7. To use it with 64-bit Vista, you will need to do a "by hand" installation, as 64-bit Vista has introduced a pair of new directories for 32-bit files that the existing installer doesn't know about. You must also use the 32-bit Java runtime (which means your Java applications & the runtime itself will be limited to 2GB of addressable memory). However, all of the other benefits of a 64-bit OS are available to you - e.g. for the other application you want to run. Here are the steps:
As to whether your specific AT will support Java in this fashion on 64-bit Vista - that is a question for the AT vendors. I have tested it with NVDA version 0.6p3.2 (latest released version as of today), and NVDA reads the contents of apps accessible Java apps just fine - just as it does on 32-bit Windows. I invite folks on the list who have access to a 64-bit Windows OS to give these instructions a try and report back. To anticipate the next question... yes, we are looking at doing an update of the Java Access Bridge to update the installer for things like 64-bit Windows, as well as other issues. I don't have anything more specific to say about times/dates at this time. Regards, Peter Korn Accessibility Architect & Principal Engineer, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Re: Using the Java Access Bridge on 64-bit Windows [was Re: Java 2 SE 6, Access Bridge, Windows 7 and 64 bit platforms?]Peter and list: Thanks for this information. I followed your steps and
reproduced your results. Unfortunately, my particular AT (JAWS 10.0) did not
work with this particular configuration, probably because it didn’t load
WindowsAccessBridge.dll. Here is my post to the JAWS beta list: Hey FS. I posted an issue maybe a month ago regarding the Java
Access Bridge and Windows Vista 64-bit. At the time, it was not clear that the
AB code itself would work with Java on a 64-bit system; however, that part of
the issue has been resolved. I followed the below instructions to the letter
and obtained the advertized result, i.e. the Java swing GUI reads using NVDA,
but unfortunately, not with JAWS. I am fairly sure that the issue is that the
DLL “WindowsAccessBridge.dll” is not being seen by JAWS, perhaps because it now
resides in the SysWOW64 directory rather than System32 as before. The reason I
don’t think JAWS is loading the DLL is that unlike in the 32-bit situation,
there is no file lock on WindowsAccessBridge.dll when JAWS in running.
Hopefully this will be easy to fix. Shipping JAWS 10.0.1154 Windows Vista 64-bit SP2 Java 1.6.014 32-bit (latest version) Java Access Bridge 2.01, manual install (see below) From: Java Accessibility interest mailing

version of the Java runtime. This will work in 64-bit Windows, as do most
32-bit applications. Note that it will be installed not into your
"Program Files" directory, but into 64-bit Vista's "Program Files
(x86)" directory. 2.
Download the "Access
Bridge 2.0.1 Manual Install (.zip)" - one of the two options you get after
following the link "Download Java Access Bridge 2.0.1" at http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/accessibility/accessbridge/ 3.
Follow the "By hand"
instructions at http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/accessibility/accessbridge/2.0.1/docs/setup.html 4.
Copy the three DLL files
"JavaAccessBridge.DLL", "JAWTAccessBridge.DLL", and
"WindowsAccessBridge.DLL" from the Access Bridge installerFiles
directory into your new for 64-bit Vista Windows\SysWOW64 directory. This
is where 64-bit Vista needs to have 32-bit DLLs (for most people the full path
will be "C:\Windows\SysWOW65"). 5.
Modify your PATH so that it
ends with the Windows\SysWOW64 directory (Start Menu-> Computer ->
Properties -> Advanced system settings -> Environment Variables ->
System Variables -> PATH to add the string
";%SystemRoot%\sysWow64" to the end of the existing PATH (or at a
minimum, that it appears after the entry for
""%SystemRoot%\system32" in your path). With those changes you should be able
to run the JavaFerret and JavaMonkey test tools and see the accessibility
information of accessible Java apps (like SwingSet2 which is what I tested
with). Dear Robert, and the folks on the
java-access mailing list, I hope you receive
more response than I did to your questions. I was not able to get the JAB
to function on a 64-bit Vista system. Since I posted my query twice to
this list, and no one responded, I can only assume that nobody has a working
instance of the JAB on a 64-bit Vista system. I am perplexed as to why no
one from Sun Microsystems has bothered to inform us regarding a very simple
question, namely, is 64-bit Vista supported?

Re: Using the Java Access Bridge on 64-bit Windows [was Re: Java 2 SE 6, Access Bridge, Windows 7 and 64 bit platforms?]FWIW, I followed Peter's directions exactly with the following results:
1. JAWS 10 -- no dice. Evidently the Windows DLL is not being loaded by JAWS. 2. I was able to duplicate Peter's results using NVDA. I have already reported this issue to Freedom Scientific as it is probably an easy fix if JAWS is simply not seeing the DLL. ________________________________________ From: Java Accessibility interest mailing list [JAVA-ACCESS@...] On Behalf Of Adrian Beech [a.beech@...] Sent: Friday, June 26, 2009 8:00 PM To: JAVA-ACCESS@... Subject: Re: Using the Java Access Bridge on 64-bit Windows [was Re: Java 2 SE 6, Access Bridge, Windows 7 and 64 bit platforms?] G’day all, I’ve tried to install and unsuccessfully run W7 RC1 (64 bit), JAWS 10.0.1154 (64 bit), Java SE 6 u13 (32 bit) and Access Bridge 2.0.1 following the steps outlined in Peter’s e-mail. This situation has caused somewhat of a problem workwise and I’ve been forced to revert to a 32bit W7 version and work to some degree outside the test teams terms of reference. BTW, even using a 32 bit version of Java was going to cause a problem in itself anyway. A disappointing and frustrating outcome for me to say the least. Hopefully one day Sun in it’s wisdom will release a 64 bit version of the Access Bridge. Thanks Peter for the time you put in responding to our postings and assisting those of us on this list. Subject: Using the Java Access Bridge on 64-bit Windows [was Re: Java 2 SE 6, Access Bridge, Windows 7 and 64 bit platforms?] Dear Robert, and the folks on the java-access mailing list, I am writing to confirm to you that the existing 32-bit Java Access Bridge version 2.0.1 does work on 64-bit Vista, and I would expect it also would work with Windows 7. Here are the steps: 1. Download and install a 32-bit version of the Java runtime. This will work in 64-bit Windows, as do most 32-bit applications. Note that it will be installed not into your "Program Files" directory, but into 64-bit Vista's "Program Files (x86)" directory. 2. Dear Robert, and the folks on the java-access mailing list, I have been traveling for several weeks, with sporadic access to e-mail; sorry I wasn't able to reply sooner. Sun does not presently deliver a 64-bit version of the Java Access Bridge code. Regards, Peter Korn Accessibility Architect & Principal Engineer, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Shelton, Robert O.
