Journal File

Hi All,

I had a data file corruption last week and I had to restore the
previous night's backup. As usual, the journal file was not able to
integrated and so all work from that day was lost. I am looking at
improving the resilience of my system with a procedure to minimise
lost work.

I am guessing that the reason the journal could not be integrated was
the journal became corrupted at the same time as the data file as they
were both in use.

My first thought is to just back up the journal file on an hourly
basis. I thought just a straight file copy, manually or via external
backup software. After experimentation it seems that this is as likely
to produce a bad file since the file could be in use when the copy is
taken.

My second idea is to use the "New log file" command but I can only see
reference to using this with a mirror server. I am not sure if you can
restore a backup and then integrate multiple log files.

Has anyone any experience of the journal file that could help me?

You might also consider buying a copy of LogTools. Our experience is that if
a journal file integration fails (pretty rare, but possible) that it's the
last transaction that has a problem. LogTools lets you remove the last
transaction (among many other useful things) making it possible to integrate
in cases where it would otherwise be impossible.

Just curious as to you comment that it was "usual" for the Log File to not
integrate.

Don't know about other's experience, and I haven't had to use the feature
that many time, but when I have had to do so, it has never failed.
