KDE crash when effects & OpenGL enabled

I have updated several packages from unstable this afternoon (I suspect of some libqt* packages, maybe libqt4-opengl?) two machines, one with ATI open driver and the other with Nvidia private driver, both systems with Xorg 7.4, and both machines crash when any effect is displayed (present windows, a simple dialog and shadow drawing, etc) unless I select Xrender, or I disble all the effects.
I have tried a new user and it happens the same. If I tried to downgrade those libqt* stuff to the version in Squeeze I'd have to downgrade KDE to 4.3.1 for not breaking dependencies, so by now I'm working without desktop effects.

Has anyone experienced the same, or know if this is an upstream bug or a Debian one? Google isn't too informative about this.

Regards

For radeon, this is most likely:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=549588
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24131

There is no known workaround, you want to switch to XRender if you want to use
effects.

I have no clue about nvidia, but the former bug seems to be radeon specific.

I forgot to say that this crash sometimes sends me to KDM login dialog, but the old one, not the Air one, and sometimes freezes keyboard and screen, although the power switch works and I can safely turn off the computers.

I had the same issue, but after a new reboot all is fine.

As far as I know it's a bug in xorg.

Check this new nvidia driver:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_190.32.html

It's Beta and not many cards are listed, but try it anyway. I'm using it with a Geforce Go 7300 which isn't supported by this beta release, but it works and
didn't crash since I switched.

Good Luck

Thanks, guys.

The problem got solved in the Nvidia machine just rebooting as Guan suggested, not in the ATI one (I restarted it several times this afternoon).
I suppose it's that bug commented by Modestas. What sounds rare to me is that the links provided by him refer to issues happened more than a week ago, and my ATI machine worked flawlessly till today's upgrade (I installed KDE 4.3.2, from Unstable with all the stuff needed from Unstable on that computer a week ago). I can't access now to the ATI machine, but I'll take a look tomorrow to Aptitude's log to see if I upgraded any Xorg related package, if I didn't it should be another reason.

That would be libgl1-mesa-dri to version 7.6-1. However, please note that the
crash is semi-random. You might just have been lucky before even with 7.6
installed.

You are totally right, I updated libgl1-mesa-dri and libgl1-mesa-glx to 7.6 from 7.5; so I wasn't lucky before, just had a non buggy driver installed.

The problem solves uninstalling the 7.6-1 version and reinstalling 7.5-1, and of course "telling" aptitude don't ever upgrade this package (till a new non buggy one is out, obviously).
This 7.5-1 version appears to have been removed from repositories. so I have had to install it, without dependecies issue at all, it from a rescue USB I make periodically and fortunately had this version.
Not that I am an unconditional desktop effects lover, but "present windows" or "desktop grid" are really handy and using Xrender made them too slow. Now I have fluent and smooth OpenGL effects again on an old Radeon X200M card, :D.

If someone has this same problem perhaps is possible to get "old" packages somewhere on the net (?) If not, take a look to your Debian CDs/USBs/whatever not too old, perhaps you have on them the working version.

From my modest opinion, and due to the big quantity of Radeon users, I think this latest buggy version shouldn't be in the Testing repos, but clearly in Unstable, and take 7.5 back to testing.

Regards.

Try snapshot.debian.net for old versions of Debian packages.

Arthur.

Hello,
I just had a look at corresponding launchpad bug (LP #446578) and is seems
that having kernel mode setting resolves the problem. As far as I understand,
the driver is not enabled in linux-image-2.6.31-trunk-686 because it is a
staging driver.
My question is anybody tested it in Debian ? I mean tested libgl1-mesa-dri 7.6
with kernel mode setting, the radeon driver and KDE ?

Best regards
