> two different sets of prices for the same security, covering different
> timespans.
>
> Having been reminded of the new facility of having, I thought, the same
> security in more than one account, with the creation of a new account I
> have been able to add a new investment to it using by moving the
> existing transactions across.
>
> However, I still have in the Prices list, two sets of prices for the one
> security, one covering a longer time period than the other, so some are
> duplicated. Where the duplication exists, I've tried deleting the first
> entry and the second entry for the same date, each in turn. But, it
> seems each of the two investments has kept its own set of prices, so I
> can't delete from the list, but want to have a way to combine them.
>
> I've looked at the database, but with my limited knowledge, I can't see
> how this can be done, as the kmmPrices entries are associated with the
> security, rather than the symbol.
>
> Perhaps I'm trying to do something which just isn't possible? Perhaps
> I've misunderstood what is possible? I was assuming I could use the
> same security in two different accounts, when all I can do is use the
> same symbol, when even then it seems like I really have two symbols
> which happen to have only the same name, but different qualities?
>
> Signed a confused allan
>
>

Following to my own post.

I think all the above can be ignored.

What I think I proved was that it is possible to have the same security
in different accounts, but not starting from where I was. An security
may be added to an account, sharing the features of an existing one, but
I could find no way to to get two existing securities in two different
accounts, and which have the same symbol, to become a single security.
Each has a different identity with its own price history.

It's not possible to export an investment account, which would have
allowed me to delete it and its security then re-import transactions
into a newly created one. Eventually, it turned out to be quicker to
re-key all the transactions. So, finally I was able to get a single
symbol and set of prices.

Hi Alvaro:

when I open the app and it starts checking for scheduled transactions,
it may take up to 4 or 5 minutes. Otherwise, by "long time" (for
example, returning to the accounts page), it really means like 10 to 15
seconds. But that time is increasing everyday (it was really fast a
couple of weeks ago).

I understand that with a file it is faster (for the moment), but I love
the possibility of working both my wife and me at the same time,
updating different accounts, from 2 different computers.

Is there anyway in which I can help with this functionality? (Testing,
I'm not really into wrinting code ).

Best regards,

Juan.
the database performance is behind compared to the file.
How much is a long time? 1 minute? 20 seconds? 10 minutes?

The database developers have been working on improving performance, but
it's obviously behind using a file, because in that case the file is
loaded into RAM and worked from there.
everybody:

I am running KMyMoney 1.0.1 (KDE 3.5.10) on Ubuntu 9.04. I am using the
database feature (MySQL3) and, so far, it works great. We are even using
it concurrently (my wife and me), and it works fine!!!

The problem I'm finding on recent times is that performance is starting
to be poor. When I open the app it starts checking for scheduled
transactions and it takes a very long time, not responding, checking
(and entering, if applicable) those transactions (and I have in total
less than 20 monthly schedules, not a big deal).

The same applies to reconciling accounts, and now even when I try to go
to back to the Accounts main page from any other part, it starts to take
some time (maybe like 15 or 20 seconds) to show me that page.

By the way, I have just moved from Windows + MS Money, so I'm still new
to Linux, and far from being an expert. Very, very, very far :):):).

Any ideas on where should I start looking?
Thanks in advance,
I'm not sure if it's a bug as the default subject title implies, or if
there is a conflict.

After upgrading to Karmic, I noticed that new lines on the ledgers are
not doing what they are checked to do, but take on the characteristics
of the previous entry. Example:

I typically--

Click on DEPOSIT>choose an item from my dropdown list in FROM (in this
case, BUSINESS 1)>DATE>AMOUNT>STATUS>ENTER

Next I want to make a transfer, TRANSFER>choose the second bank on my
dropdown TRANSFER TO>DATE>AMOUNT>STATUS>ENTER

Now, if I go to that second step, it will have BUSINESS 1 selected for
some reason and even though TRANSFER is chosen and the tab "pops out",
it will deposit (because that was the last thing I had done before this
entry) the amount and the TRANSFER TO will now read FROM. I fiddle with
it after a few more attempts to make it work correctly. Also, during
these attempts, I had even chosen NEW then stepped through my usual
procedures, but this did not work. For each new line, I just repeatedly
chose each of the three tabs till the other options read correctly, then
finished the line entry.

KMYMONEY 1.0.2 (USING KDE 3.5.10)
KARMIC KOALA

I apologize for the vagueness but didn't know how else to explain it.
If there is more info that you are needing, please guide me through on
how to get it, especially if it involves using the terminal. The
"report bug" feature in the help dropdown did not function for me with
no noticeable error thrown at me.

Thanks in advance for your quick reply.

> Hi Thomas

> I've noticed that the price from an investment buy transaction is not
> being added to the Prices List. I was sure that was sorted out so I've
> just been going through my emails. It was 4 October last:-
>
> "Hi Thomas
>
> Finally, they're here!! These are the patches I've produced to
> transfer qif processing to mymoneystatementreader. They also add
> category file processing, transaction matching as per
> mymoneystatementreader, extraction of pricing information from buy,
> sell, etc. transactions, and one or two 'features' I found along the
> way.
> "
>
> Were they not added, or pulled, or did they fall out?!!

Ahem...

Of course, I was working just on qif importing, and that does still work
the way I thought.

What does not seem to work, though, is adding prices from manually added
transactions, which is what I was looking at. A different kettle of
fish altogether!

I've had the same security in two different accounts for a while so have
two different sets of prices for the same security, covering different

Hello William,
the right place to enter these feature requests, if you don't want them to be forgotten under a pile of emails, is in the Sourceforge Tracker, here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=4708&atid=354708
Hi again,

Some improvements into ledger of investments :
* when selling a security, automatic completion of quantity - or maybe a box to check for "sell all shares"
* list of actions with merging / fusion-absorption / exchange of securities/values
Mostly efficient formula is :
"X" (shares of) "1st value" exchanged for "Y" (shares of) "2nd security" with optional (1st or 2nd value) a fee or a gain in cash
This last feature can be written by two or three lines with add security of 2nd, withdrawal of the 1st and dividend of one of them.

Thanks

It's a more large work but I purpose it : management of rental property.

Even if account can be used for this, there is some special functions :
* a ledger of bills/invoices
* a ledger for warrant/garantee
* reconciliation must support partial amount over bills and existing credits to apply to new bills

Hi again,

Some improvements into ledger of investments :
* when selling a security, automatic completion of quantity - or maybe a box to check for "sell all shares"
* list of actions with merging / fusion-absorption / exchange of securities/values

Hi,

Here again for lights improvements :

- when creating a new file for KMM, how about a field for "default date" for all accounts with an alert message about this date is important for editing/creating transactions. I see it's a regular topic in notice/forum/bugzilla. So new account should take this "default date" and prevent some bad use.

- in home page of KMM, access to website / getting help, should start browser defined by system

- in panel of "institutions" or "accounts" or "category", show last view of user or automatically deploy tree (in brief a customizable view)

- for "institutions" and "investments" views, an option for not showing values/securities with a total of 0. When you have some old account there is a lot of lines and the option for closing securities isn't very efficient for a day-to-day use.
This option of not showing inused securities should affect also reports. it will win in clarity.

- in report "Performance by account" should also calculate "performance/return of investment" for - account - and not only for securities. It misses total for account. A rentability rate by year should be impressive and a good sensor.

- a new color in ledger in order to differentiate future transactions from others

- function for cancelling last operation - it's useful when importing a file

Thanks

Hi,

Grants for your work about KMM, it's a nice software.
Here I purpose some new features / minor improvements:

- in Tools -> Securities, only two buttons : Edit / Delete.
I think this place can be a real "control panel" with
* new security
* close - open this security
* enter manual / download quote
* view historic quotes on one security (maybe with a graphic)
* access to a report over this security - maybe directly in proper ledger (like search function)?

- by default, all securities may be shared between all accounts. This should prevent some misunderstood by a lot of users (?)
Maybe this can be another page on security with a list of box for choosing shared accounts for this value.
Of course, function for merging securities will be nice.

- Download quotes :
* how to download historical quotes ; QIF import doesn't work well but it wasn't create for - and historic quote bring more accuracy
* one automatic download per day as soon as KMM is launched

- creating new security.
In second page of wizard, after symbol, name, fraction...item "currency" should :
* not show securities but only currencies
* support more one letter for autocompletion (like completion in category or payee)
In last third page of wizard a function to search and find directly symbol of security over the web - maybe with a dialog box to confirm choice - in order to configure more easily (I know this feature is a large work to do)

Thanks
William
Hi,

In one ledger, enter a new transaction with split fonction, validate it.
Then edit/modify this new transaction and erase all data in box of split
fonction. If you define the single category into this split box, I award you
that's working perfectly.
But that's not this way to find this little bug. After erase all data,
validate. You should have a box for three choices, because there is an amount
without category. Then define single category to assign to transaction and
validate transaction.
You may have after this, an error on this transaction with "unassigned
category".
> I have been downloading OFX directly from my bank since this feature was
> first added to the CVS version a while ago. I'm running on Fedora 11, 32
> bit.
>
> This morning when I downloaded the transactions for my credit card account
> I had 15 transactions that were added to my account. The problem is that
> 14 of the 15 had already been downloaded so I had 14 duplicate
> transactions.
>
> This problem is inconsistent. I closed my KMM file without saving it and
> tried to reproduce the problem. It does not happen every time. Sometimes I
> get "15 processed, 1 added, 14 duplicates" (correct) and sometimes I get
> "15 processed, 15 added, 0 duplicates" (wrong).
>
> When it adds the 14 that already exist and then I update the account again
> it always finds the duplicates (i.e. I never get triplicate transactions).
> When I select the two duplicate transactions the "Match" option is
> disabled.
>
> Most of my testing has been done downloading the OFX file for just my
> credit card. The few times that I download the OFX files for all of my
> online accounts causes this problem every time (I only get duplicates in
> my credit card account, not in any other accounts and I have not done this
> enough times to be sure it really happens every time). If I start by only
> updating my credit card account about half the time it sees the duplicates
> and half the time it adds the duplicates. When it sees the duplicates (and
> therefore does not add them) and I try to update the credit card account
> again and again it eventually misses the duplicate transactions and adds
> them to the account. Sometimes it happens the second time, sometimes it
> takes 6 or 6 tries. Eventually I will have duplicates added to my KMM
> file.
>
> To be clear on my last test the first 3 times worked as expected and the
> 4TH try added the 14 transactions that were already in the account.
>
> I deleted all of the transactions for the month of October, told KMM to
> only import the previous 5 days. I got 5 transactions. Saved KMM. Opened
> KMM, downloaded OFX for the credit card 3 times. The third time it
> duplicated the transactions.
>
> I have many OFX accounts and this is only affecting my credit card account.
> It has the most transactions but most or all of the other accounts have
> recent transactions that could be duplicated but they are not.
>
> We just switched back from Daylight Saving Time to standard time in the US
> today. I have no idea why this would cause a problem but I hate
> troubleshooting problems with partial info.
>
> I compile the CVS version fairly often and went back to the October 15
> version. It has the same problem as today's CVS. Unfortunately I purged
> older versions recently since everything seemed to be stable.

In the meantime - and sorry for the delay: I was sick - Brandon found out,
that while downloading the same statement information he receives different
FITIDs for the same thing. That's bad. Here's the relevant portion from the
OFX 2.1.1 spec (don't know if that is the newest one or not):

---8<---
3.2.3 Financial Institution Transaction ID <FITID>
Format: A-255

An FI (or its Service Provider) assigns an <FITID> to uniquely identify a
financial transaction that can appear in an account statement. Its primary
purpose is to allow a client to detect duplicate responses. Open Financial
Exchange intends <FITID> for use in statement download applications, where
every transaction (not just those that are client-originated or server-
originated) requires a unique ID.

An <FITID> also uniquely identifies the closing statement in <CLOSINGRS> and
<CCCLOSINGRS>. Again, the OFX client should detect repeated closing statements
(duplicate downloads) using these identifiers.

FITIDs must be unique within the scope of an account but need not be
sequential or even increasing. Clients should be aware that FITIDs are not
unique across FIs. If a client performs the same type of request within the
same scope at two different FIs, clients will need to use FI + <ACCTID> +
<FITID> as a globally unique key in a client database. That is, the <FITID>
value must be unique within the account and Financial Institution (independent
of the service provider).

Note: Although the specification allows FITIDs of up to 255 characters, client
performance may significantly improve if servers use fewer characters. It is
recommended that servers use 32 characters or fewer.
---8<---

So it's time to get in touch with the bank, as they violate the following
(maybe they are not even aware of it):

* FITIDs must be unique within the scope of an account
* the <FITID> value must be unique within the account and Financial
Institution (independent of the service provider).

Brandon is seeing the following when download (sometimes duplicates are
detected, sometimes not. That's what OK and BAD are saying):

OK: bankid="ID 11/04/09($31.00)...."
BAD: bankid="ID 11/04/2009($31.00)...."

bankid in this case is filled with the data from the OFX field FITID with a
prepended "ID ". If this field is not filled by the OFX provider, KMyMoney
uses the OFX field REFNUM prepended by "REF " as a unique key if present.

--

Regards

Thomas Baumgart
> > Thanks for the responses. i will try the command line backup. I did one
> > from phpMyAdmin and it appears to generate a restoreable SQL command set
> > with the data also.
> >
> > Only unanswered part now is when I do a save to database after adding to
> > the ledger, it tells me there is data to remove first. Does this mean it
> > rewrite the total ledger and all the other tables each time? No way to
> > Append to current data?
>
> The 'save to database' function is used once when transferring data from an
> existing XML file to the SQL database.
>
> Whenever you open a database (as opposed to opening a KMY file) and change
> any item, the database is updated instantaneously (that's what these
> animals are good for). So even if the program crashes no changes are lost.
> So there is absolutely no need to run the 'save as database' twice and in
> case you do, the existing data will be overridden.
>
> > Is there a bug reporting system for KMyMoney or do I report any I find
> > thru KDE Bugzilla?
>
> Officially, we use the SF tracker at
> https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=4708 for bugs and feature
> requests, but also have a look at b.k.o. on an intermittent basis. With
> the port to KDE4 and the move of the package into the KDE SVN repository
> this will be the place to report bugs in the future anyway.
>
> > Thanks again for all responses.
>
> You're welcome.
>

I love this piece of software, I have used it for several years with very good
results.

Know I would like to ask you if you know how to run it in systems that have
eliminate KDE3 support like Mandriva 2010 have. I don't want to migrate to
other software, I'm comfortable with Kmymoney2.

I know it's not fair asking you a solution to this issue because you only did
your best. But if you know or come to know how to fix it please let us know.

In the mine time I'm thinking of installing a Virtual machine (killing flies

>>>>>
>>>>> I have imported from Quicken 2002 a file containing Accounts List,
>>>>> SecurityList, and Transactions for an investment account. There is no
>>>>> brokerage account in Quicken, and the file has not been modified in any
>>>>> way, just imported.
>>>>>
>>>>> The import completes successfully, but the particular account appears
>>>>> five times, as follows:-
>>>>> 1) Account name Type - Investment
>>>>> 3) Account name (Brokerage) Type - Current - empty
>>>>> 4) Account name (Investment) Type - Investment - empty
>>>>>
>>>>> This sort of duplication occurs every time for me.
>>>>>
>>>>> Allan
>>>> Hi Thomas
>>>>
>>>> Further information, and some thoughts.
>>>>
>>>> This time, I export only Security list and transactions, no Account
>>>> list.
>>>>
>>>> On import, I get a dialog asking for an account. I create one and the
>>>> import completes. Securities list shows all securities from Quicken and
>>>> all prices for all securities are in the Prices list. Only the expected
>>>> accounts appear, the created investment account and the imported stock
>>>> account.
>>>>
>>>> Finally, I export Account list and transactions.
>>> I assume of a single investment account.
>> Yes, sort of. The Quicken Accounts list includes *all* accounts (names,
>> etc., not transactions) it knows of, but only one account may be
>> exported at a time. A Securities list includes all securities and all
>> their prices.
>>
>>>> On import, four
>>>> accounts have been created - an investment account, a current
>>>> account(Brokerage), an investment account(Investment) and its Stock
>>>> account. The Securities and Prices lists are empty, as expected. The
>>>> transactions that are in the qif file have not been imported.
>>> Hmm, why did it not import the transactions?
>> I think because on this run there were no !Type:Security entries. They
>> are in the Accounts list. If both are imported together, all is well.
>> Si, I think this is a red herring. I was trying to identify where all
>> the accounts came from, so ran the two separately. I think this can
>> probably be ignored.
>>
>>>> So, to me it appears that the Accounts list processing produces the
>>>> unneeded accounts. To me, a Brokerage account should not be created
>>>> automatically, but only if one is imported.
>>> In general I agree. There is a limitation though in KMyMoney, that does
>>> not handle some constructs used in Quicken w/o a brokerage account. Since
>>> we don't know upfront, if those constructs are used or not, we simply
>>> create the brokerage account to be on the safe side during the import and
>>> leave it to the user to remove it if unused.
>> I'm pretty sure it used to though, before the big rework. When I was
>> doing all my testing before that, I'm sure this didn't happen.
>
> Yes, but during the big rework one of the fellow testers/users who provided me
> with many details wanted to get things like dividend payments w/o a given
> checking/current account to work (which makes sense) and that is why we needed
> the brokerage account as a last resort (that is the Div vs. DivX record type
> in QIF).
>
>>> The problem is, that with the current version of KMyMoney you cannot use
>>> the investment account itself as current account. This is what can be
>>> done in MS- Money and Quicken. Maybe (I am pretty sure) a future version
>>> will support this w/o an artificial brokerage account. But I expect to
>>> see larger changes to the business logic and reporting code while
>>> allowing to store funds in the investment account and that is why we
>>> decided not to allow it in 1.0.
>>>
>>>> The Securities list appears
>>>> to be processed more or less correctly, needing only to have an
>>>> investment account supplied. However, if the Account list has already
>>>> created an investment account, then the security processing should
>>>> perhaps look for an existing account, before creating a new one in
>>>> addition. Similarly for its stock account. Or, create only one
>>>> investment account from the Account list, and one stock account from the
>>>> Securities list.
>>> Something like that. I don't remember all the details of the QIF importer
>>> at this point.
>>>
>>> Maybe a future version of the QIF importer will allow to run over a whole
>>> set of files in multiple rounds underneath the hood to detect all those
>>> problems. OTOH, how long is QIF still around?
>> Well, it seems at the moment to be the only accepted way to import and
>> export across apps. Do you see KMM exporting in OFX? It's still not
>> that widely supported. Will KMM import and export in csv at some stage?
>> Perhaps there will be some bloat of xml?
>
> Unfortunately, QIF seems to be the only method. But why should we support
> people leaving KMyMoney? LOL.

But I want to re-import to KMM!

I know, the exporter needs to be fixed at some
> point. Not sure if OFX is the way to go, it certainly would get rid of a lot
> of ambiguities and trouble we have with QIF. XML? Just use the KMyMoney file
> directly :) No need to write an exporter for that.
>

Ah yes, but export to where? <VBG>

allan

This is a problem with libofx. I have filed a bug with them [1], but until now
I have no confirmation/information about what is planned to solve the issue.
In case you can build libofx from source, there is a patch attached to the bug
entry that should solve the problem. It works (ehm, used to work) against CVS
HEAD of libofx at some point in time (maybe still does). In case you go that
route, please let us know of the results.
> >>>
> >>>
> >>>
> >>> Allan
> >>
> >>
> >>
> >>
> >>
> >
>
>
> >
>
>
> >
>

> >
> >
I don't remember all the details of the QIF importer
> > at this point.
> >
>

LOL. I know, the exporter needs to be fixed at some
point. Not sure if OFX is the way to go, it certainly would get rid of a lot
of ambiguities and trouble we have with QIF. XML? Just use the KMyMoney file
directly :) No need to write an exporter for that.

--

I love this piece of software, I have used it for several years with very good
>>> Version:           1.0.2-CVS (using KDE 4.3.1)
>>> OS:                Linux
>>> Installed from: Compiled From Sources
>>>
>>> I have imported from Quicken 2002 a file containing Accounts List,
>>> SecurityList, and Transactions for an investment account. There is no
>>> brokerage account in Quicken, and the file has not been modified in any
>>> way, just imported.
>>>
>>> The import completes successfully, but the particular account appears
>>> five times, as follows:-
>>> 1) Account name                    Type - Investment
>>> 2)    "                          Type - Stock
>>> 3) Account name (Brokerage) Type - Current - empty
>>> 4) Account name (Investment) Type - Investment - empty
>>> 5)     "                  Type - Stock        - empty
>>>
>>> This sort of duplication occurs every time for me.
>>>
>>> Allan
>> Hi Thomas
>>
>> Further information, and some thoughts.
>>
>> This time, I export only Security list and transactions, no Account list.
>>
>>
>

>
>

>
>
There is a limitation though in KMyMoney, that does not
> handle some constructs used in Quicken w/o a brokerage account. Since we don't
> know upfront, if those constructs are used or not, we simply create the
> brokerage account to be on the safe side during the import and leave it to the
> investment account itself as current account. This is what can be done in MS-
That is partially by design, though it looks at bit awkward that there is a
second investment type account.

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

With yours instructions, I've found a method to merge securities, it's a little boring :
- first : going to account in order to modify "duplicate" security (like add one letter in order to create a new security with a common symbol as you teached me);
- second : erase all quotes from the first security
- third : erase the first security
- quarter : download unified quote.

For your information,

William

> Hi,
> > Ok thanks for this information. It was "exactly" (and not similar).
>
> I thought so.
>
> > I found the "sharing" dialog box, not easily.
> > Like you instructed, I use only the symbol (first item), wipe all other
> > items, typing TAB over all items/buttons once and it seems that is the
> > twice passage over the second item (name) is the clack. First attempt,
> > freeze totally KMM. Second attempt was successful.
>
> Yes, it only pops up when no other field is filled. It differentiates between
> adding a new investment and editing an existing one at this point.
>
> > Is there tips for existing securities ? Or for sharing by default all
> > securities ?
>
> Unfortunately no. The only way to solve this I know of is to modify the file
> manually - which I do *not* recommend to the regular user.
> > OS: Linux
> > Installed from: Compiled From Sources
> >
> > I have imported from Quicken 2002 a file containing Accounts List,
> > SecurityList, and Transactions for an investment account. There is no
> > brokerage account in Quicken, and the file has not been modified in any
> > way, just imported.
> >
> > The import completes successfully, but the particular account appears
> > five times, as follows:-
> > 1) Account name Type - Investment
> >
> > This sort of duplication occurs every time for me.
> >
> > Allan
>
> Hi Thomas
>
> Further information, and some thoughts.
>
> This time, I export only Security list and transactions, no Account list.
>
>

> On import, four
> accounts have been created - an investment account, a current
> account(Brokerage), an investment account(Investment) and its Stock
> account. The Securities and Prices lists are empty, as expected. The
> transactions that are in the qif file have not been imported.

Hmm, why did it not import the transactions?

> So, to me it appears that the Accounts list processing produces the
> unneeded accounts. To me, a Brokerage account should not be created
> automatically, but only if one is imported.

In general I agree. There is a limitation though in KMyMoney, that does not
handle some constructs used in Quicken w/o a brokerage account. Since we don't
know upfront, if those constructs are used or not, we simply create the
brokerage account to be on the safe side during the import and leave it to the
user to remove it if unused.

The problem is, that with the current version of KMyMoney you cannot use the
investment account itself as current account. This is what can be done in MS-
Money and Quicken. Maybe (I am pretty sure) a future version will support
this w/o an artificial brokerage account. But I expect to see larger changes
to the business logic and reporting code while allowing to store funds in the
investment account and that is why we decided not to allow it in 1.0.

> The Securities list appears
> to be processed more or less correctly, needing only to have an
> investment account supplied. However, if the Account list has already
> created an investment account, then the security processing should
> perhaps look for an existing account, before creating a new one in
> addition. Similarly for its stock account. Or, create only one
> investment account from the Account list, and one stock account from the
> Securities list.

Something like that. I don't remember all the details of the QIF importer at
this point.

Maybe a future version of the QIF importer will allow to run over a whole set
of files in multiple rounds underneath the hood to detect all those problems.
OTOH, how long is QIF still around?

--

Regards
