Welcome to the Kansas Statewide Rare Bird Alert compiled by the Kansas
Ornithological Society. This report was prepared on Monday, August 17.

Transcriber's Note: Birds listed in ALL CAPS in the Species Mentioned
section signify that the Revised Checklist of Kansas  Birds lists them as
Occasional, Accidental, Extirpated, or never having occurred before for the
season being reported.


Recent sightings from around the state include:


The immature female WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER continues in Garden City at least
through October 24.

An immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK was observed at Milford Lake near Junction City
on Octobe 15.

An estimated fifty McCOWN'S LONGSPUS were seen near Larned on October 19.

One ROCK WREN was noted in a Larned shelterbelt on October 20. Another
central Kansas ROCK WREN was observed at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge
October 24.

PURPLE FINCH, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS were observed at
Cheney Wildlife Area in Reno County on October 21.

A Gray-headed variant DARK-EYED JUNCO was observed at Oak Park in Wichita on
October 23.

More than five BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES were seen near Inman on October 24.

WHITE-FACED IBIS and NELSON'S SPARROWS were seen at the Baker Wetlands in
Lawrence on October 24. More NELSON'S SPARROWS were observed there one day
later on October 25.

One GOLDEN EAGLE was seen near Leavenworth on October 24.

A female BLACK SCOTER was seen in northwest Wichita on October 25.

Two NELSON'S SPARROWS were readily found at Slate Creek Wildlife Area in
Sumner County on October 25.
