The production server is fast enough that we do not worry about running
the script unless the search stops working. The icu.idx method for Zebra
seems to be a bit more sensitive to marc records with some kind of
defect and a manual reindex with the script allows us to see what
exactly is going on.

A suggestion for a clean backup of your server. We are using
automysqlbackup script, a free script from Sourceforge. We back up the
database nightly and we backup the /etc directory and the koha directory
and the clone directory weekly. We are using Veritas for the backup to

So how often do you manually reindex your production server?

Thanks for this I may try it on my test server when I get back to
school.
I'm having a few problems in getting a clean backup of my production
right now so that might start another discussion!
> reindex
> either nightly or every few hrs or when you do a batch import.
> with zebra do
> PERL5LIB=/kohainstall/lib

Thanks for this I may try it on my test server when I get back to school. I'm having a few problems in getting a clean backup of my production server right now so that might start another discussion!

maybe someone can correct me on this but i believe your supposed to
reindex
either nightly or every few hrs or when you do a batch import.
with zebra do
PERL5LIB=/kohainstall/lib
/kohainstall/bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -b -a -r

Do the logs say anything? Namely the Koha error log and maybe the

Can you access the following directly on your install:
had written:

>> I've been monitoring the git.koha.org web site for the 3.0.x branch of Koha:
>>
>> http://git.koha.org/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=Koha;a=shortlog;h=3.0.x
>>
>> I noticed that Henri-Damien LAURENT submitted the release notes for
>> 3.0.5. So, I assume that Koha 3.0.5 release is imminent and that is
>> great. Thanks again to Henri for being the release maintainer for the
>> [snip]
>> However, I can't find the following patch(es) of mine, for Bug 3730,
>> that I submitted in October, in the Release Notes for 3.0.5:

... and on Fri, Dec 18, 2009, Chris Cormack <chris@...> replied:

> I'm sure you have noticed now, but the patch has been applied and is in
> the 3.0.5 release

Right. I see that my patch has been committed for 3.0.5 here:

git.koha.org Git - Koha/commit
Bug 3730 - Wrong ISO 639-2 Language Code for Portuguese in database
>
> Thank you very much for your responses. Our library is currently using KOHA
> version 3.01.00.032., so if you could write a report like I described that
> works with version 3.01.00.032, then we don't care right now if it works
> with LEK. It is also not important that I be able to specify parameters in
> a wizard, I am happy to go in and edit the SQL with new call numbers, dates
> etc. each time I run it.
> If a report is created that does what we want in version 3.01.00.032, I will
> figure out how to post it to the community repository of KOHA reports - I
> haven't ever done that :) - but I'll figure out how and share it, I promise.
>
> I don't see any reports like this in the repository right now. There is one
> called a "super weeder" but I don't think it is quite what we are looking
> for, so I wonder what kind of "weeding" reports other KOHA libraries are
> currently using?
>
> (Sorry for the delayed reponse, your responses got marked spam and I didn't
> find them until now.)
>

Ahhh thats a pretty old version of the code. Koha is currently at
3.01.00.100 in master, and 3.00.05.001 in the 3.0.x branch.
Ill have a go at writing one that works with the latest database structure.
This will probably work fine with your older version.

It will probably have to wait until after Christmas though :)

> Thank you for all the responses. I should have explained more clearly that
> I know extremely little about mysql - so some of the comments I've gotten
> from the lists I sent this to are going right over my head. But I do
> promise that once we have a working report(s), I will make sure it gets
> posted to the KOHA community report repository.
>
> We realized that we have a major problem with the sql reports that I
> posted
> previously. These reports do not include zero circulations when listing
> items with less than three circulations. We are using this for weeding so
> we definitely want to know about those zero circulation items! Beverly has
> been a wonderfully helpful, but does not know how to solve this problem.
> Perhaps we need to approach this report in a different way? I will explain
> what we are trying to get and attach an example to this email.
>
> I'll try to answer Chris Cormack's question and describe our ideal
> report -
>
> It would allow you to specify the following variables...
> 1) a specific call number range
> 2) a specific time frame - _____ date to _____ date
> 3) choose "greater than," "less than" or "equal to" a specific a number of
> circulations.
> For example the report could list all "copies with less than 3
> circulations"
> in the specified call number range (MUSIC 1999 CD to MUSIC ZZ TOP CD)
> during
> the specified time period (2004-01-01 to 2009-12-31).
> Circulations = issues+renewals+local use
>
> I am attaching a copy of a page from the circulation report we used to use
> with our old ILS - Follett. The attached .pdf is listing oversize
> non-fiction books with less than 3 circulations between 1/1/2004 and
> 4/28/2009. So it gives you items that meet this criteria and also lists
> the
> following data - total circulations for today, total circulations this
> month, total circulations year to date, total circulations last year, and
> total circulations during the specified time period.
>
> So, that is what we need. I hope my efforts to explain, are not making
> this
> more confusing :) The final report does not need to look like the attached
> report, it just needs to have the data.
>
> We would greatly appreciate any help, and think that this type of
> circulation report (or something similar) is an essential tool for
> librarians who regularly weed their collections.
>
> Regarding Chris Nighswonger's comment - We are hoping to eventually move
> to
> LEK, and I can test the reports in our LEK sandbox. If we could get a
> report working with our current database that would be a great first step.
> We are currently using KOHA version 3.01.00.032.
>

Hi Andrea

If you are moving to LEK, we can't really help you too much. Since LEK
is not Koha, we don't know what database changes and code changes have
been made in LEK.
We could write something like this for Koha, so that all libraries
would get the benefit of it. But I wouldn't be comfortable doing one
tailored to work in LEK, so it can be locked away.

Chris

Thank you for your responses.

The design of the enhanced library search engine we would like to integrate with Koha can be found in the 2009 JASIST paper which was co-authored by several members of our team now. Here is the reference for that paper:

Maria Soledad Pera, William Lund, and Yiu-Kai Ng, A Sophisticated Library Search Strategy Using Kolksonomies and Similarity Matches <http://faculty.cs.byu.edu/~dennis/papers/EnLibS-Rev.pdf>. Journal of the American Society of Information Science and Technology (JASIST) Volumne 60, Issue 7, pp. 1392-1406, July 2009.

You can download the paper from the link and view it if you would like.
Essentialy the sustem uses folksonomies (tagging) to provide more relevent search results to the user. The tags they used to do similarity matching were actually from LibraryThing.

I would suggest reading at least the abstract of this document if you want to know more of what thy did.

I will look into Zebra a little more to see if our answer is with them.

Thanks,
Chad

NoZebra mode is at a severe disadvantage in terms of featureset, performance, scalability, extensibility and basically everything (except ease of installation). I would not recommend that anyone who wants their feature to be used by even modestly sized libraries should develop it for NoZebra mode. The only widely useful development would be with zebra.

To clarify: what they call folksonomy, most people nowadays just call tagging. Koha has tagging already, and just needs to work it into the zebra indexes better. Another valid expansion of this feature would be to integrate with LibraryThing's shared tags metadata. That takes the tags outside the ILS instance and into a separate repository.

Koha uses two methods of searching in the OPAC, and in general. The
first is through third party open source package from IndexData called
Zebra. The second is NoZebra mode. My opinion is that applying your
algorithm to the NoZebra mode would be the easiest option here. Unless
you want to also work with IndexData to add to that package.

I'm not totally familiar with how NoZebra searches work currently, but
my understanding is that there is a database table of search terms and
the record id's associated with those terms. Others from the list may
have a better understanding, or be able to provide more details. Point
is that there may need to be some changes to the database as part of
implementing your algorithm. This isn't a big deal though, Koha has an
upgrade mechanism to handle this.

The big catch is that library formats (MARC) will play a big role in
what is index for searching. Some limited knowledge will be necessary.
This may be provided by members of the Koha developer community though.
Just be warned that the various MARC formats are complex.

To summarize: adding your algorithm to Koha is possible, and will be
easy with help from the developers community.

Good luck with your project.

> options.
>
> I'd like to setup a Koha instance, but need to use a non-default
> configuration (different tcp port, etc).
>
> Would I edit koha-conf.xml or koha-httpd.conf before or
> after the install via perl Makefile.PL ; make ; make install?
>

After the make install, edit koha-httpd.conf (and koha-conf.xml if you need to)
make install doesnt restart apache so you can make the port changes,
then restart apache

> Hi all,
> I noticed that Henri-Damien LAURENT submitted the release notes for
> 3.0.5. So, I assume that Koha 3.0.5 release is imminent and that is
> great. Thanks again to Henri for being the release maintainer for the
> 3.0.x branch! :)
>
> The release notes for 3.0.5, in git is available at:
> Short URL for that:
> However, I can't find the following patch(es) of mine, for Bug 3730,
> that I submitted in October, in the Release Notes for 3.0.5:
>

Im sure you have noticed now, but the patch has been applied and is in
the 3.0.5 release

im going to take a shot at this and maybe someone else can reply to mine, but
multiple search cant happen unless you modify koha. You can either do that on
the back end and fully integrate it so it works how you would like or you can do
a quick hack with some javascript and a drop down list form.

with the perl & html you would have to modify the .pl and the .tmpl of the page
you want to have it shown on. I would try and emulate the backend search feature
on how it picks libraries....

with my quick method, you would put the library name and as the value or
whatever have it go to the "Ip" of that library so it changes website locations
to that libraries opac. The javascript would redirect automatically after the
person selected the library so you would not need a submit button.

the only thing to this is, if you update koha, you remove your code. so just
remember what you edit and how you edited it.

hope this helps a little or gives an idea.
> For the SFX Target, I think all I need to do is get the proper Parser (which generates the URL), and the Parse params (variables), and save it as a new Target. Then it should be an easy matter to add a "Search for this title in Koha" link to the SFX menu.
>
> I'd love to see Koha function as an Open Link Resolver. IndexData has a Perl module, Keystone::Resolver, which may be a start. http://search.cpan.org/~mirk/Keystone-Resolver-1.18/lib/Keystone/Resolver.pm. We'd also need to look at some of our Zebra indexes and make sure they can be mapped to OpenURL fields.
>
> I'll share all the info as it comes my way, and once I get it working, publish a how-to (may take a while).

first i would use aptitude and look for the packages under not installed > perl
and look for the libs, + to add hit g and then g again to install ;)

if you can not find the package in the repository use cpan.
if not in root, sudo cpan
install GD::Barcode::UPCE
not sure if you have used cpan before, package names have to be exact. It then
compiles the package for you and gets any dependency it needs. But i recommend
using aptitute first or some debian package manager to see if it is in the
debian repository, good luck.

Hi,

Is there a way in Koha to know if a borrower is allowed to check out a
book without trying to do it effectively? I would like to be able, given
a borrower number, to know immediately if he's blocked. This is related
to Koha SIP2 Server. In the protocol, the Self-Check can ask to Koha
such a thing and give immediately feedback to the patron.

For what I see in C4::Circulation, there is a function named TooMany
which verify a borrower's authorization to check out put but with an
item number. Do you think that Koha issuing rules would permit to have a
IsBorrowerAllowedToCheckout function accepting just a borrower ID parameter?

Thanks.

Zico,
Let’s take this to the general list, as MJ suggested.
Shouldn't you be using the -z option for incremental updates?
Nonetheless, that is not the cause of the problem. The problem does not
occur in fresh installs, it seems to only occur where a data base has been
upgraded from an earlier version.
So does that suggest that a data element has been lost in the upgrade? If
so, why is the problem only in the OPAC?
It needs a bit of research to identify the exact circumstance. I won't be
able to do that until after Christmas.

Thanks Bob! I think, "z" is working! But, the point is: after deletion one record, it shows in searching and if i click on that.... the Error 404 comes with:

This error means that the link was broken and that the page doesn't exist

To report this error, you can mailzico@....
