We use the cron job that is part of the Koha backend to reindex nightly.
The production server is fast enough that we do not worry about running
the script unless the search stops working. The icu.idx method for Zebra
seems to be a bit more sensitive to marc records with some kind of
defect and a manual reindex with the script allows us to see what
exactly is going on.

A suggestion for a clean backup of your server. We are using
automysqlbackup script, a free script from Sourceforge. We back up the
database nightly and we backup the /etc directory and the koha directory
and the clone directory weekly. We are using Veritas for the backup to
tape.

You probably need to tell us:-

* Any error message (preferred) or precise problem description,
including the name of the program being used (such as the name of the
web browser). If there's no error on the screen, check any relevant
log files you can find.

* Web address of error (if any).

* How to obtain the error, step-by-step if possible.

* If that process has worked for you before, the date when it worked.

(This is copy-pasta which you could avoid by reading the list archives
before posting. I see many bug reports that are missing vital info
like the above and this seems better than you getting no reply.)

KOHA Error Redirecting Help

Hello all.

I am having some problem with redirecting a standard KOHA Error to some other page. Actually I've modified a function to navigate to next and previous biblionumber within the records in KOHA. The problem is that if I supply a existing biblionumber it works fine, but when I supply a biblionumber that is not present then it gives the following error.

I'm running over a local git repo, but the tarball should be fine too.

Do the logs say anything? Namely the Koha error log and maybe the
Apache error log as well?

Can you access the following directly on your install:

http://localhost/cgi-bin/koha/labels/label-item-search.pl

NOTE: You may need to change localhost to whatever is appropriate for
your system.

Hello Chris, the point is: i have just opened two tabs.. one is my 3.0.4 and another is my new 3.0.5. Koha-3.0.4 is running fine label printing windows... but... koha-3.0.5 cannot!! :(

Maybe check any pop-up blockers you may be running.

Labels works fine on a fresh install of 3.0.5 on my dev server.

Tools-> Label and Patron Card Creator -> Create a new batch -> Add item(s) to batch

No windows comes... i mean, after clicking "Add item(s) to batch" .. another window should come.. as i saw in koha-3.0.1 & 3.0.4! But, nothing is coming here!!! Here, i want to add that, My active layout is ok.

koha 3.0.4 + holdings + "no physical items available"

Hi, in my new Koha 3.0.4 system which running under Debian 5.0; i am facing problem regarding holding issue. Say, i have 5 holdings for some book; now if i search for that book in OPAC; it shows me that, there are 5 holdings but *only one* physical item is showing there... others are showing that... "no physical items for this record"!

How can i get rid of this?

Ahhh thats a pretty old version of the code. Koha is currently at
3.01.00.100 in master, and 3.00.05.001 in the 3.0.x branch.
Ill have a go at writing one that works with the latest database structure.
This will probably work fine with your older version.

It will probably have to wait until after Christmas though :)

Thank you very much for your responses. Our library is currently using KOHA
version 3.01.00.032., so if you could write a report like I described that
works with version 3.01.00.032, then we don't care right now if it works
with LEK. It is also not important that I be able to specify parameters in
a wizard, I am happy to go in and edit the SQL with new call numbers, dates
etc. each time I run it.
If a report is created that does what we want in version 3.01.00.032, I will
figure out how to post it to the community repository of KOHA reports - I
haven't ever done that :) - but I'll figure out how and share it, I promise.

I don't see any reports like this in the repository right now. There is one
called a "super weeder" but I don't think it is quite what we are looking
for, so I wonder what kind of "weeding" reports other KOHA libraries are
currently using?

Hi Andrea

If you are moving to LEK, we can't really help you too much. Since LEK
is not Koha, we don't know what database changes and code changes have
been made in LEK.
We could write something like this for Koha, so that all libraries
would get the benefit of it. But I wouldn't be comfortable doing one
tailored to work in LEK, so it can be locked away.

I haven't read the whole thing, but I'm confused by this. Is there
some aspect of Koha's tagging function which does not fulfill "( i )"
above?

Is a full-text search of MARC records (including subject headings,
notes, descriptions, etc) not the same as a search of "unrestricted"
keywords? This proposal seems to imply a conception of Koha's search
function as being limited to subject headings.

The design of the enhanced library search engine we would like to integrate with Koha can be found in the 2009 JASIST paper which was co-authored by several members of our team now. Here is the reference for that paper:

You can download the paper from the link and view it if you would like.
Essentialy the sustem uses folksonomies (tagging) to provide more relevent search results to the user. The tags they used to do similarity matching were actually from LibraryThing.

I would suggest reading at least the abstract of this document if you want to know more of what thy did.

I will look into Zebra a little more to see if our answer is with them.

After the make install, edit koha-httpd.conf (and koha-conf.xml if you need to)
make install doesnt restart apache so you can make the port changes,

im going to take a shot at this and maybe someone else can reply to mine, but
multiple search cant happen unless you modify koha. You can either do that on
the back end and fully integrate it so it works how you would like or you can do
a quick hack with some javascript and a drop down list form.

with the perl & html you would have to modify the .pl and the .tmpl of the page
you want to have it shown on. I would try and emulate the backend search feature
on how it picks libraries....

with my quick method, you would put the library name and as the value or
whatever have it go to the "Ip" of that library so it changes website locations
to that libraries opac. The javascript would redirect automatically after the
person selected the library so you would not need a submit button.

the only thing to this is, if you update koha, you remove your code. so just
remember what you edit and how you edited it.

hope this helps a little or gives an idea.

I wrote a shell script for the times we need to manually reindex Zebra.
Our development box isn't a speed demon, so a large load takes some time
to index, so we help it along a bit. The production box is a speed
demon, so we don't need to reindex often. This script can be run from
Webmin. We are not doing authorities and the -v (verbose) is very
helpful in spotting possible issues.

if you can not find the package in the repository use cpan.
if not in root, sudo cpan
install GD::Barcode::UPCE
not sure if you have used cpan before, package names have to be exact. It then
compiles the package for you and gets any dependency it needs. But i recommend
using aptitute first or some debian package manager to see if it is in the
debian repository, good luck.

issuing rules are based on patron categ/itemtype/branch (except if

I am the one who wrote about the encoding utf-8 line missing from the file. You are right. You are absolutely correct about converting the file from latin1 to uft-8 as well.

We gave up on character mapping as a means of getting Spanish language diacritics to search properly and went with the icu.idx method. The string.chr file that the icu.idx file references was also encoded as latin1 instead of utf-8. The indexing worked, amazingly enough, even though I had more errors of different types than I have ever seen before on a simple reindex of Zebra. Converting the string.chr to utf-8 got rid of the errors.

I just discovered that from that time on I have multiple errors in the log of rebuild_zebra like:

It appears that this file also had latin1 file encoding in my OS. Saving it with utf-8 file encoding seems to resolve the situation..

Koha Issuing Rules and Borrower

Hi,

Is there a way in Koha to know if a borrower is allowed to check out a
book without trying to do it effectively? I would like to be able, given
a borrower number, to know immediately if he's blocked. This is related
to Koha SIP2 Server. In the protocol, the Self-Check can ask to Koha
such a thing and give immediately feedback to the patron.

For what I see in C4::Circulation, there is a function named TooMany
which verify a borrower's authorization to check out put but with an
item number. Do you think that Koha issuing rules would permit to have a
IsBorrowerAllowedToCheckout function accepting just a borrower ID parameter?

I just discovered that from that time on I have multiple errors in the log of rebuild_zebra like:

[fatal] Bad value-set specification

[warn] Failed to read character table sort-string-utf.chr

It appears that this file also had latin1 file encoding in my OS. Saving it with utf-8 file encoding seems to resolve the situation..
