Another suggestion for all you talented linux-using musicians and
composers: please consider making an entry on LAM http://lam.fugal.net
linking to your work. ( I know some of you do already: Will, Tapani, Ken.)
It only takes a minute, and it makes much easier for people to find your
work, especially after some time has passed. Plus we end up with a
public repository of our best efforts.

all the best, G.

fyi, mattin is running the cdr-/netlabel `free software series' ... "for
the promotion of experimental works realized using free software" ...

This assumes, I think, that everyone making music has a permanent
server to point to. Not true in my case...

It shouldn't be difficult to get one.  Perhaps that's a topic for
discussion?

Blog hosting at least tends to be easy to come by, and from there you
can point at wherever you have to host your larger content.

Open an account and set up a page on Internet Archive. It's free!

You can add songs and edit them. You can then link the entire page or
make direct links to individual tracks as you wish.

About the only stipulation they make is that the material has to be
on a Creative Commons license or public domain.

Say you have a poem and I have a tune.
Exchange them and we can both have a poem, a tune, and a song.

Well that's a fair point , Mark. Having said that though, I spend just
under 100 UKP on web hosting a year  - 2  UKP a week - doesn't even buy
one pint of beer.
I appreciate that in some parts of the world that might be far too
expensive, but then there is always trusty old www.archive.org.

all the best, G.

Thanks for the pointer, Tim. That looks a bit radical: I'll make some
time to check that out.

If you are willing to use a number of the creative commons licenses for your
stuff, kompoz will hold stuff for you (although they are more geared for
group making of music) as will the internet archive.

all the best,

Last time I tried, direct links changed from time to time, so they are
not reliable.

Thanks for the warning! I wasn't aware of that :(

You just need to make sure you're using the 'main' link to an item and
not the uglier link which names a specific server (because the data is
held on server farms, similar to mirroring services). I've been using
archive.org for many years without changing any of the links! Our
podcast - http://www.flatfourradio.co.uk/ stores its podcast files on
archive.org (and the live stream is served from icecast on our home
server)

Best

Hmm, last time I tried (long while ago), I got ugly links to specific
servers, but if I go to one of my item pages now, I see "clean" links.
Good :)

That clarifies things. I had a quick check on my links and they all
seemed 'clean'.
