Last sail?I hope not but it was a nice one. Got out this afternoon for about an
hour and a half. Light winds, no chop, almost warm. Watr temp is down to 58. We've usually hauled the boat sometime around the first week in Nov. We'll see. The list is awfully quiet. Is everyone else out sailing or has something stuffed a sock in it? Re: Last sail?Hellow quiet listees, and Mary Lou,
I've been told to stuff a sock in it on occasion. Well no sailing for me, the boat is all warm and cozy in one of those pole and tarp car ports from Costco. It has worked well except when we had a big hail storm and aquired some small skylights. I just tarped it ower and it seems to be working. Wished I was out for one of those late fall sails on the bay. Well, just have to look forward to spring. Chris G Enosis ---- Mary Lou Troy <mtroy@...> wrote: > I hope not but it was a nice one. Re: Last sail?Went to the lake Tuesday after work , and stayed the night on the boat.Woke up to a 21 gun salute,so that's what all these duck blinds are about.Last year I asked the game warden about anchoring out during duck season, and he said " It's as much your lake as it is their's".I said yea ,but I don't carry any guns onboard. He said "you might want to anchor near the shore, instead of out in the middle of the lake.I threw out the hook between the shore and Treasure to limit my exposure to the bulk of the lake.Weather forecast said low 40's,but most likely didn't get below 45^F . I took a spare battery and a 12v heater (that I bought at a yard sale for a dollar ) with me for a test to see how well it would heat the cabin. Let's just say, plan on spending more than a dollar for a heater to heat the cabin on a Rhodes. The good news is I took a day's vacation on Wednesday ,my brother took a day off of farming and met me at the slip at noon and we sailed all day with winds 10-15 mph ,sunny and it got up to 72^F.Great day. Re: Last sail?Mary Lou,
I was out there with you. It was such a nice day I couldn't resist. Winds picked up a bit by 5:00 p.m. and was able some decent sailing in before dark. Had such a good time I snuck out again today for a couple of hours. The forecast for rain almost scared me away but it turned out to be excellent conditions. I had the full main out and boom up when the wind increased from 10 to 13 knots. Instead of reefing the main I lowered the boom. I knew it would make an improvement but was surprised that the heel was reduced by 5 degrees and speed increased by .9 knots on a close reach. I much prefer sailing with the poptop up but I may have to rethink that. Curious when other Rhodies typically lower their booms? Lee 1986 Rhodes22 At Ease Kent Island, MD

As you know, we usually sail with the pop-top down. I suspect around 9 or 10 knots, you would have seen some reduction in heel and speed increase just by lowering the pop-top. Not as dramatic as with lowering the boom however. We usually reduce the jib first. Lower the boom second. Then start reducing jib and main as the wind increases. The boat would sail better if we reversed the first two steps but we have to start watching for the boom when it's lowered so we usually delay that if we can. Winter cover Re: Last sail?Rory, We put a tarp on the boat. I've seen advice that says don't
shrink-wrap a painted boat. Can cause blisters in the paint. Not sure if that's from heat or moisture but we've never considered it seriously. We use a variation on Robert Skinner's PVC supports for a winter cover: http://www.rhodes22.org/pipermail/rhodes22-list/2007-March/039700.html http://www.rhodes22.org/pipermail/rhodes22-list/attch/200703/12/BoatCoverFrame.pdf Here's a post I made last year that had pics of the frame for ours attached: http://www.rhodes22.org/pipermail/rhodes22-list/2008-September/054952.html The tarp drapes over the frame and is held in place with a combination of ties to the trailer and under the boat. We also use a few bottles filled with sand as weights. Re: Winter cover Re: Last sail?I have shrink wrapped with no sign of damage but it is expensive.
I tried a reinforced tarp once but the wind down here did it in quickly.. Seems like I can get it wrapped about 3 times though b4 it costs as much as a tarp that I think would hold up.

Re: Winter cover Re: Last sail?We get two years out of a tarp but we are somewhat sheltered in the
boat yard. Even so, it has to be tied down really well so it doesn't flap or sag. Re: Winter cover Re: Last sail?I get 3 or 4 years but am sheltered between a couple of sand dunes. I also
use two tarps, the old one on the bottom and a newer one on top. I can get away with holes since they don't usually line up. I also use plastic trelliswiork reinforced with pvc tubing to cover the cockpit area to reinforce the tarp.
