LightZone 3.1 for Linux: maybe closer than you think

I followed the recent thread about Light Crafts' treachery towards
users, and I'd like to add some information.

I am the guy who performed the original Linux port of LightZone, and
let me tell you: Marcin is right, the Linux port is easy.  The
LightZone 3.1 code base builds fine on Linux, and all its features
work.  Light Crafts is just figuring out whether and how they want to
release it.

If you guys feel like writing Light Crafts to express opinions about
this, then I think you should.  Just keep in mind that it's not a
matter of building it, only a question of how to market and deliver it
to people.

Anton

Hi Anton, first thanxs for all the work you have put into LZ.

Since other company's have no problem with delivery i really don't see why LZ
should.
I do get the feeling that LZ and Linux are not going to be a good team.
If there is such little interest and respect i wonder if it is worth asking
for. But again it is a good program but i was forced to find a solution.

After watching http://meetthegimp.org I also found that
ufraw/rawtherapee + gimp does the job for me. I mostly publish my
pictures on websites so I don't need 16bit/channel all the time.

Lightzone is nice but if Linux is not supported I don't care anymore.
LZ is resources hungry and to be honest I would have to upgrade my old
still powerful AthlonXP machine as latest LZ needs SEE2 to work (small
company not enough resources to keep up both SSE and SSE2 support).
Getting new hardware would cost me few times more than LZ license
itself.

Anyway as I said. With little effort anyone can have LZ 3.1 on Linux
without RAW support. You can do RAW images with rawtherapee save them
as 16bit TIFF's and do everything else as you like with LZ. Bit more
complicated but still possible.

While I would have loved to have seen the linux version materialize in
a supported way, I gave up waiting.
BibbleLabs do not seem to have the same issues as Lightcrafts, have a
much friendlier and MUCH more vibrant forum in which all developers
participate in, plugins that work etc etc.
They also have the enlightened policy of allowing single use of your
serial number on all of their supported platforms.

The news that it is only marketing/support issues rather than real
technical challenges that have been keeping Lightzone unavailable only
serve to make me LESS likely to use it in the future.
I'd rather be using something the company is behind than what would be
the obvious red headed step child.

Therefore I have already voted with my cash. BibblePro, with a free
upgrade to V5 when it releases - yet another thing that could be
learned from BibbleLabs.....

I can understand why people are jumping to Bibble, since it possesses the
key advantage of actually being current for Linux. However, I've never
considered it a full and adequate replacement for LZ, chiefly because it
lacks selective or regional editing. Its UI is also, to put it charitably,
often less than intuitive, it's had its fair share of bugs and the support
via the forums has been a little brusque or outright hostile on occasion
while failing to address the underlying issues (so...not that different to
LZ perhaps - Linux users seem to have a talent for winding up developers
;-). And Bibble 5 might be a free upgrade, but it's a long time coming.

Bibble is a decent product (and the nexi.com plugins are great) and I'm
glad it's available for Linux, but it's not the answer to the current,
hopefully temporary, absence of LZ.

Vector regions will be provided by RawTherapee 3.x. Anyway, there is no
delivery date.

As Lightcrafts gives such answeres (they actually release more
information than author intended) I believe my NDA is no longer a
problem, still don't tell Lightcrafts that I released informations,
just in case.

Yes, Lightcrafts is working on Lightzone 3 for linux. It will be the
same version as windows or mac (as previous versions are not supported).
I am signed to be a beta tester but one of the following is true:
1) they forget about that
2) there is still no beta for testing

therefore I can not tell anything about completeness, speed and
stability.

Lets wait for the announcements but LZ4linux is coming really
soon!

Oh, and one more - noone said it will be free, therefore I believe it
will not. Prepare wallets and show Lightcrafts that they made a good
choice.

Bit too late I think. After seeing some meet the gimp podcasts +
playing with RawTherapee I completely
lost interest in (very slow) LightZone. It depends on pricing they
will offer for Linux users as well. Having basic version working with
let's say F-spot would be interesting.

I also had to look around for another way of finishing my picture's.
So i went looking around in the wonderfull linux world and found a way of
doing what i need/want to do.
That included buying Bibble Pro where i found a fully working linux version.
I did contact them because i don't have a credit card. Same day i got the link
of a German online shop that distribibutes Bibble and accepts bank transfer.
So withing a day i orderd the program.
Now i doubt if i would purchase LZ if it would be available for linux users.
When i remember the time it took to get some answers and keeping the way they
treed possible buyers in mind, i am not looking forward to interact with that
sort of company.
I still have great respect for Anton's work but since he left i feel no loalty
left towards LZ.
As for Jacek, i understand your step to participate in LZ and i remember the
few fine contacts we had.
So my feeling about LZ is formed only by the feeling i have about the company,
not by individuals.

Have a nice day,
Raymond

If and when Lightcrafts bring out a new Linux version I will buy it.  I have Bibblepro due to my license of RawShooter Professional ( its not only under Linux that great products get canceled ) and have been using Krita as an editor.  However, I really liked how Lightzone worked.. it fit in with my mental model of using a darkroom.  I was hoping they would do something before their 20% discount ended, but thats not looking hopeful.

Does the offer hold for all users of the list? I was looking forward to the day I could move from the 2.4 release to 3.x :)

I think we should officially declare Jacek "Salesperson of the year". We don't
even know if the product will ever exist and he's been able to sell it to
many of us already! :-)
