I don't know where to get LightZone version 2 for Linux. But I've
seen a lot of requests for it, because of the SSE2 requirement in
version 3.

I forwarded Pippo's request to someone at Light Crafts. I know there
are good, stable version 2 builds lying around. Maybe they'll do
something about this.

3.3B crash

Trying 3.3B on Ubuntu 7.10 I managed to crash LZ within minutes of
starting using it (opened a raw image shot on a Nikon D300, started
editing it and poof).
In my home directory I found a file named hs_err_pid29998.log which was
generated by the JRE. This file seems to contain a complete stack dump.
Is this file useful to the developers? If yes, where should I send it?
It is probably too big to be posted.

LightZone 3.3 printing crashes

Regarding all the crashes people have seen when trying to print from LightZone 3.3:

I believe this is a known "upstream" bug in Sun's Java printing framework on top of CUPS. Here's Sun's bug database entry for it:

I saw that one fellow reported the problem was solved by downgrading his CUPS package:

Another Ubuntu Gutsy user reported more detailed procedures for this workaround:

Of course, the obvious workaround is to export your work as TIFF/JPEG and then print from some other app.

I would not expect Light Crafts to fix this problem before Sun deals with it.

Hi,

I've tried LZ on machine that it was always slow (even it's high spec
dual core CPU and 2gb of RAM) and I can see improvement. Looks like
it;s much more responsive and I hope final version will be even
better.

Hi Jacek,

something you might want to add: the LightZone startup script still passes the
log-file as $prg_dir/LightZone.log. With Linux (and with Vista, they are
learning ;-) a normal user should not (and cannot) write to the directory,
where the program is installed.
A better solution is $HOME/LightZone/LightZone.log.

FYI: LightZone 3.3B just works out of the box with OpenSUSE 10.3. I have not
tried printing yet and some of the new goodies, but normal (aka 2.4)
operation works fine.

So, if they don't want bugreports on the forum I put mine one here.

I opened .pef from Pentax K100D, edited it a bit with Styles, exported
to .jpg (successfully), pressed Ctrl+B, then LZ crashed, the .lzn
hasn't been created as I expected. I can reproduce this crash with
another file in the same directory.

it was a good feeling to try the new beta. A lot of interesting gui enhancements
and shortcuts (lift/apply tools is great) and good to see that lightcrafts at
least recognizes that there is a linux user base.

The beta is buggy, of course, but for this it is a beta. So now we have to find
a common solution for the bug management.

I've given it a quick try on my box (Athlon 3200, 2GB RAM, Fedora 7 with
JRE 1.6.0.03 instead of bundled version) and it seems OK:

Not greatly different to 2.4. I haven't given it a full workout yet,
particularly with a raw file. Loving the new features though, particularly
the included styles.

Still, Lightcrafts just went to the top of my Company Of The Year list.

huge LightZone cache directory (was Re: LZ Linux 3.3B problems)

It's true that LightZone grabs file system space for caching RAW file
conversion data under its ~/.lzncache directory. The first RAW
conversion on an image can take a long time for decryption and
demosaicing. Caching makes it faster to reopen same image after that,
at the expense of disk space.

The size of the cache is capped at 5 GB. After that, LightZone throws
away the oldest data as needed. This cap is not user-configurable,
but it probably should be.

The two things you can do to improve this are 1) link ~/.lzncache to a
more optimized file system, like Marcin did; and 2) try using the
"local" cache option. From the menu bar, go Edit->Preferences, and
look for the "Browser Cache" option. This lets you toggle between the
default "global" cache location (~/.lzncache) and an alternate "local"
cache location (many cache folders, each one in the same folder as the
image whose data it is caching, with every folder called something
like "LightZonePreviews"). So then you can manually delete cache
folders you're not using, and free up some space.

Also, if you just want to clear this cache, there's another button for
that in the same Preferences dialog.

Isn't "Core 2 Duo" a 64-bit CPU? It's possible LightZone is troubled
by running 32-bit Kubuntu on a 64-bit architecture.

It would be great if you could let us know if things change after your
Kubuntu upgrade.

I also found that LZ 3.2 under let's say Virtulabox and 1GB of memory
given to Windows 2000 installed much more responsive than Linux
version. The hardware is exactly the same maybe there are some
problems with I/O performance under Java and as LZ uses harddrive a

One user reported crash ut startup (more or less the same as was
reported on this mailing list) but it turned out that some files got
corrupted while unpacking. If you encounter problems try to redownload
and carefully unpack the tar (command line tools give, usually, more
feedback than GUI).

It crashes when select printing.

Ubuntu 7.10/Thinkpad R61 4GB (2GB enabled for LZ)

LZ is very slow. I don't know why but even if I give it 2GB of RAM it
still relies very much on hard drive (entire lzcache is growing and
being used at every operation you make). I have linked lzcache to
different separate hdd it helped a bit but is still way too slow in my
opinion. After one session of abour 80 pictures lzcache is almost 5GB
?? Don't know why the heck to use hdd if I got 4gb of memory and LZ
gets 2GB of it. Looks like Java is unable to handle memory with proper
efficiency or maybe LZ is written that way.

33b on 64-bit

So far so good on the 64 bit AMD Ubuntu box; similar to my results at
work today on the Intel 64 bit box at work (I ran both under terminal to
see if anything interesting happened: nothing!).

I've tried printing straight from the application (LZ 3.3 on Ubuntu 7.04) and
it seem to be broken (it adds a print to the printer's queue, but it has
the "error" status).
I remember there was a hack involving replacement of the Java runtime
environment to make older versions print so I'll try and see if that still
applies.
For what I've been able to see to the moment LZ runs nicely and is a much
appreciated christmas present. Now I just have to figure out what all those
new buttons and light things are for! :-)
