LightZone is like Photoshop and the Gimp, but it's easier to use and it's focused on photography. It features RAW file support, high-fidelity color space management, non-destructive editing, and color-managed printing and export. It's mostly written in Java and the larger tarball includes a Java runtime environment. It requires no privileges and runs no install scripts.
LightZone is copyrighted by Light Crafts Inc. of Palo Alto, CA. Light Crafts has said it's OK to give away the Linux version of LightZone in binary form, but they don't sell it, they don't support it, and if you contact them about it they will ignore you.
>>
>
> Well, i'm using both, Raw Therapee for conversion, white-balance, color
> editing and fine tuning, sharpness enhancement, noise reduction, and then,
> if necessary, LightZone for zone editing, light and shadow details.
> If you take a deeper look at it, you will find that Raw Therapee can do a
> lot of high quality image editing, so, in most cases, for me there is just
> the resizing job left to to for another program.
> For this (and other tasks) i use PhotoLine32 with CrossOver Linux, which
> works quite fine.
> (A little bit off topic, sorry for that.)

I've tried LZ on machine that it was always slow (even it's high spec
dual core CPU and 2gb of RAM) and I can see improvement. Looks like
it;s much more responsive and I hope final version will be even
better.

Hi Jacek,

something you might want to add: the LightZone startup script still passes the
log-file as $prg_dir/LightZone.log. With Linux (and with Vista, they are
learning ;-) a normal user should not (and cannot) write to the directory,
where the program is installed.
A better solution is $HOME/LightZone/LightZone.log.

FYI: LightZone 3.3B just works out of the box with OpenSUSE 10.3. I have not
tried printing yet and some of the new goodies, but normal (aka 2.4)
operation works fine.
> >
> > I think it would be better to post a new thread "bugs" in linux
> > section of the forum. Everyone can read it, everyone can register
>
> that's not a good idea since in the forum it says "please do not post
> bugreports here".

I thought the same but here is what Grant Kim wrote:

"Let me clarify a bit. LightZone Linux is currently in Beta. This means
there is NO support available for LZ Linux. Linux users may use the
forum to see if other users have similar problems. Linux users may
email us to share an issue or problem, but do not expect a response.
Light Crafts development team does view the forums to look for common
issues, but cannot respond individually.

Also, we are now creating a Linux Topic here in the forums for Linux
users to communicate to each other."

They want to see hom much noise will their release do, how many users
will contribute. Then they decide what to do with linux release (that's
why there is no clear statement about policy, pricing etc.)

Hello lightzone-linuxers, Anton,

it was a good feeling to try the new beta. A lot of interesting gui enhancements
and shortcuts (lift/apply tools is great) and good to see that lightcrafts at
least recognizes that there is a linux user base.

The beta is buggy, of course, but for this it is a beta. So now we have to find
a common solution for the bug management.

Shall we post the bugs in a certain thread here on the list or shall we use the
lightcrafts linux forum for this purpose?

It's true that LightZone grabs file system space for caching RAW file
conversion data under its ~/.lzncache directory. The first RAW
conversion on an image can take a long time for decryption and
demosaicing. Caching makes it faster to reopen same image after that,
at the expense of disk space.

The size of the cache is capped at 5 GB. After that, LightZone throws
away the oldest data as needed. This cap is not user-configurable,
but it probably should be.

The two things you can do to improve this are 1) link ~/.lzncache to a
more optimized file system, like Marcin did; and 2) try using the
"local" cache option. From the menu bar, go Edit->Preferences, and
look for the "Browser Cache" option. This lets you toggle between the
default "global" cache location (~/.lzncache) and an alternate "local"
cache location (many cache folders, each one in the same folder as the
image whose data it is caching, with every folder called something
like "LightZonePreviews"). So then you can manually delete cache
folders you're not using, and free up some space.

Also, if you just want to clear this cache, there's another button for
that in the same Preferences dialog.
> gets 2GB of it. Looks like Java is unable to handle memory with proper

One user reported crash ut startup (more or less the same as was
reported on this mailing list) but it turned out that some files got
corrupted while unpacking. If you encounter problems try to redownload
and carefully unpack the tar (command line tools give, usually, more
feedback than GUI).

LZ is very slow. I don't know why but even if I give it 2GB of RAM it
still relies very much on hard drive (entire lzcache is growing and
being used at every operation you make). I have linked lzcache to
different separate hdd it helped a bit but is still way too slow in my
opinion. After one session of abour 80 pictures lzcache is almost 5GB
?? Don't know why the heck to use hdd if I got 4gb of memory and LZ
gets 2GB of it. Looks like Java is unable to handle memory with proper
efficiency or maybe LZ is written that way.
it seem to be broken (it adds a print to the printer's queue, but it has
I remember there was a hack involving replacement of the Java runtime
For what I've been able to see to the moment LZ runs nicely and is a much
From: Scott McGregor <scott@...>

*Dear long suffering */*LightZone for Linux v2.4*/* users,*

It has been many long months since Light Craft last released a Linux
release (version 2.4 in fact). I know that many of our
Linux brethren felt forgotten, ignored or rejected because of this long
delay. To all of you who remained loyal Linux users through it all I
want to say, I want to offer my deepest apologies and my most sincere
thanks..

I know that some of you have heard rumors of a forthcoming new release
of /LightZone for Linux/. There have been some unverified reports of
Anton Kast leading a team of Light Craft elves at the north pole,
working feverishly at each night complete a new /LightZone for Linux/
version with all the same features as our 3.x Windows and Mac users in
time for Christmas deliveries.

Others may have heard gloomy forecasts of LightZone for Linux's untimely
demise; after all, have you ever tried building a digital image
processor from wood and snow? Some tongue-in-cheek pessimists
sardonically blogged that* "*/*Linux users will not see a new LightZone
release until Hell freezes over".*/* *

Still others of you have been curious about the long silence at Light
Crafts regarding the future of LightZone for Linux. Would this year be
a bring a holiday surprise for Linux users? Or would Linux users just
receive a lump of coal this year (possibly subject to CO2 cap taxes)?

To those pessimists, let me say this: as humorist Mark Twain once said
concerning rumors of his own death, so too have/ *rumors of the death of
LightZone for Linux have been exaggerated.*/

Let us give thanks that we live in remarkable times . The Internet is a
truly marvelous invention; not only does it enable us to keep up to date
on the latest happenings at the north pole using Google Earth, but /*you
can check the weather reports for even the most distant points of the
globe. */

Indeed,* I was able to check the weather forecast for Hell (Norway) at
*/*http://www.fallingrain.com/world/NO/10/Hell.html*/ from my desk here
at Light Craft's HQ.

As you can see from the temperature forecast chart on that page,
temperatures over the coming week are expected to fluctuate daily
between -2℃ (28.4℉) and 2℃ (35.6 ℉) . That is to say, *it*/* will be
just about freezing every day this week in Hell*. /

So, while doom sayers may take pleasure in being right about this
release not arriving until Hell froze over, the rest of us can now
warmly celebrate. For while it may be cold outside, */LightZone for
Linux 3.3B is now here,/* giving us lots of reasons to stay inside
bathed in the glow of our computer screens.

The wait is over! *You can now download a free 3.3B beta version for
Linux right now!!! Go to www.LightCrafts.com/linux
<http://www.LightCrafts.com/linux> for details.*

Once again, let me say that I am sorry that it has taken so long to
qualify and release this new version. It has been a long effort for us
here at Light Crafts too, and something that I have personally trying to
bring to fruition ever since I joined Light Crafts, several months ago.
I hope you will find the new features worth the wait.

/T//hanks to your patience, your vocal support for a Linux version, and
hard work by many people in the Linux and LightZone communities,/ you
can now use the *new Re-light tool*, the *updated ZoneMapper and Zone
tools* and *many other features that previously were only available in
our Mac and Windows versions.*

For those of you who want to see the press release of this remarkable
event with your own eyes,* t**he official press release is posted
at: http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release.do?id=804420&sourceType=1
<http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release.do?id=804420&sourceType=1>. *
*
*Enjoy!*
