Limited ram and full install of Puppy considerationsHi Guys,
My understanding of the Puppy "frugal" install is that it runs with three compressed files loaded into ram which are uncompressed as needed. I have 384 MB of ram, which *used* to be cutting edge in 1998 but nowadays is nothing. If I put a bunch of OS files in that little bit of ram I still need to load jOrgan, ACO and who knows what else? Not only that, the 400 mHz CPU is going to have to compress and uncompress files as they are needed rather than get them off the hard disk. It will most likely be paging the swap file all the time. There is still more to consider, the 8 GB hard disk has nothing else on it so we don't need to be storing anything uncompressed just to make it fit. Finally, I also have USB storage available, although the machine can't boot from it. Not to mention that the last full install setup booted perfectly and several attempts to make "frugal" installs boot have failed. Does anyone have a "frugal" Puppy install booting? -- Regards, Pete http://pete-theisen.com/ http://elect-pete-theisen.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Come build with us! Re: Limited ram and full install of Puppy considerationsHi Pete,
I have Puppy 4.2.1 running from a Frugal install on a USB memory stick (the computer has 4 GIG ram, so I can't really help when dealing with 384Meg RAM). I also have Puppy 4.2.1 running from a Full install on a Celeron 900Mhz with 640Meg Ram. Then I have a bunch of Virtual installations using VirtualBox on my laptop, most with 1024Meg Ram assigned to them. Troubleshooting Puppy installation problems should probably be taken care of on the Puppy Linux forum, or as personal messages to me and perhaps one or two others, rather than the whole forum. Re: Limited ram and full install of Puppy considerationsIt takes less time to access a compressed file on a hard drive than an
uncompressed one. The situation can be more efficient and faster for the cpu to expand the file on the fly rather than seeking it expanded on a hard drive. I'm confused by the puppy install process I just had a difficult time updating, (love it though) had to get rid of the two files, my personal stuff and the compressed file (from 211) 241 wouldn't over right them and I couldn't unmount the /dev/sda/ to get grup working. Fiddle, fiddle and many tries later it worked. Patrick -----Original Message----- From: Pete Theisen [mailto:petetheisen@...] Sent: Saturday, October 17, 2009 12:10 PM To: jorgan-user@... In the intervening several hours I said the heck with it and re-installed 4.0, which works fine. My 384 ram is too small to run the OS and the software too, so I did the "full" install. > My understanding of the Puppy "frugal" install is that it runs with three > compressed files loaded into ram which are uncompressed as needed. > I have 384 MB of ram, which *used* to be cutting edge in 1998 but nowadays > is nothing. -- Regards, Pete http://pete-theisen.com/ http://elect-pete-theisen.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Come build with us!
