Another great Rock n Roll Rally.

Thanks to Tony Debby & Lauren, Steve Jill & Laura , Pete & Susie ,you all put in a lot of hardwork to make it the success that it was.

Thanks to Mike and Julie for the instruction ,I'm still struggling with the Eifell Tower, whoops sorry it was the Statue of Liberty.

Thanks to the Sweet Dreamz Disco , it was brilliant or so the DJ kept telling us!!

The only downside was the poor old lady who walked all the way from Screddington only to be thrown out by Tony and Steve , she didn't even get one dance.

Gas Regulators on newish caravans.

Modern (newish) caravans have the regulator fixed on the bulkhead towards the top of the gas bottle locker. When being serviced, a check is made on the pressure being delivered through the regulator.

When I bought my caravan I had a change-over valve fitted. The check showed insufficient pressure through the regulator and the change-over valve was deemed to have failed. When the hose from the gas bottle was connected directly to the regulator checks showed pressure was just within acceptable limits.

The regulator was then examined and found to in a marked state of deterioration.

The bulkhead mounted gas regulator used by all Swift Group Caravans and many other manufacturers is made by Truma.

Swift Group were contacted on my behalf and I have been told that Truma are no longer prepared to accept liability for their regulators as they consider that bottled gas has an unacceptable amount of oil contamination in the gas which is causing their regulators to fail.

Gazflow (who made my changeover valve) take a different point of view – that the hose between valve and regulator breaks down and the rubber liquefies causing valve and regulator failure. Gazflow’s solution is to use stainless piping and under those conditions are prepared to give a five year warranty on their change-over valves and regulators.

I believe that a good many people are getting round the present problems by using an old type (more robust) regulator at the gas bottle end and supplying gas to the caravan through the barbeque point. A few years ago, I made arrangements for Newschat to publish an article on the subject of gas through the b.b.q point. Caravan Club, and insurers are trying their utmost to have gas bottles only in the gas bottle locker. (They are worried about vandalism – my own view is that the most likely problem is leaking gas, and far better to have a leak in the open where it will more readily dilute and dissipate).

I spent some time loading and delivering LPG. Unlike motor fuel, which does have minor differences between brands, LPG for all the main brands comes from the same storage tank and is the same product. If there were to be any change in the product specification (oil – sic!) it should have been well publicised.

I was given two options:

1 Renew the rubber hose, and carry a spare regulator ready to use. (You can bet your life the old regulator would pack up in the middle of a freezing, stormy night)

2 Invest some money in Gazflow regulator and stainless pipes and have a five year warranty.

Can I suggest that when your caravan goes for service you raise the above with your dealer?

The first ever rally we did was a bonfire one with another centre in November last year - we weren't sure what to expect and whether or not we would like it - since then we have only done one other rally with that centre; we did one or two with other centres; but the majority have been with Lincs Centre. We have been made so welcome, enjoyed some good company and wanted to let you know that we appreciate all the hard work that you all put into making sure all events are the success they are; every rally has given us the opportunity to get away in the 'van, cheaply, and in good company.

Thank you all. We have registered with Lincs Centre this year and are looking forward to seeing you all on lots more rallies.

What a fantastic weekend we had. Thanks to all you ralliers who came and made it the weekend it was. The weather made it of course but so did the Dance Instructors Mike and Julie who taught us a few moves and enabled those who had never danced before to join in when the Band played in the evening. The Band were Great and left us all wanting more. Hopefully the new dancers went away wanting to carry on and do it all again another time.
From forum: Rallying

Hi All,
Just in case your sitting around wanting to run a rally and don't know where to find a site, we now have over 100 site owners offering sites all over the UK and also in France, on our Database. So if you want to help the center and your fellow railers then get in touch and I'll let you have a copy of the data base so you can find a site for your rally. You may find it a bit daunting, planning and running your first rally but the committee are here to help and you will find out by asking the 3 or 4 new marshals this year it is a lot of fun.
Don't just sit there leaving it to others because if you leave it to nobody then rallying will just fade away and as older marshals hang up their badges and you leave it to nobody to take their place then the rallies that we all enjoy will just cease. Please think about this and get in touch
Just a quick note to let you all know that the liaison forms are starting to come in slowly. We have at the moment four established rallies that have no marshals, they are:

2009 Spalding Flower Show May 1st to 4th.
2009 Spalding New Year December 28th to Jan 1st.

If any one can fill these marshal post please let me know as soon as possible. Also could I have any liaison forms in by September please, this will help to get the rally book completed by the AGM instead of a rush at the end of the year.
During the Youth/Motorsports Rally at Oakhill Leisure on June 20th - 22nd i will be running a round of the Caravan Manoeuvring Champoinship (CMC) this is where the members of the CMC use their own towcar to tow our centres motorsports caravan around a series of laid out courses, this is under timed conditions. Great fun for all spectators!!
There is a novice class, so you will not feel under pressure by any of the more experienced CMC drivers.

Ever thought what would happen should your spouse/partner become unwell during the rally, and you were faced with either finding someone to tow your outfit home or attempting it yourself???
Well here is the answer.... Over the Saturday/Sunday myself and other members of the CMC will gladly offer to give you 30-60mins of our time to sit passenger along side you and give tuition and help persons to gain confidence and more skill in all aspects of towing a caravan, all carried out in a large open area.

Hi Folks, The information on mirrors in the mag is not strictley correct, the following is the official line, extract from the Department of Transport on May 1st 2008, The requirements for caravan towing mirrors follow the vehicle requirements as defined in regulation 33 of the road vehicles (construction & use) regulations 1986. Regulation 33 requires that the mirrors comply with either the EC Directives (71/127/EEC or 2003/97/EC) or UNECE Regulation 46.
The current confusion is based on the fact that regulation 33 allows compiance with EC Directive 2003/97/EC. However, the requirements of this directive do not become compulsory for new cars until Jan 26th 2010. Therefore, if the towing is already in use, or newly purchased now- E marking is preferred (but not strictly required)
If a new car is purchased after Jan 26th 2010, then 2003/97/EC or UNECE Regulation 46 compliant caravan towing mirrors will be required for that vehicle, We assume that all caravan towing mirrors will comply with the new requirements by that time.
For those who want to be pedantic about the markings on the mirrors: 'e'
in a rectangle signifies approval to the EC Directives; and 'E' in a circle signifies approval to the UNECE Regulation.
Either of these markings is acceptable." hope tis clears up some of the confusion.
From forum: Technical Issues

The May issue of the Caravan Club magazine has infomation on the legality of towing mirrors pg 22

Your towing mirrors in most circumstances must be E-marked on both sides of the car.
