> Okay. But that should only apply when you change the mix-level or the IR,
> either its parameters, which results in a re-calculation of the IR, or the
> file. Both are probably not things you would automate inside a session. Unless
> the position of the source is a parameter for a big artificial convolution to
> simulate whole acoustic environments. I think most people just use an IR of
> some nice room to have a hall-effect...

Actually the thing I'm still working on will provide
similar facities. I don't think they a luxury.

I attach two jconvolver config templates that will allow
using the reverbs provided in the Hybridreverb database
with jconvolver.

BTW, Christian Borss' convolution processor is really very
well designed. It uses some clever tricks to optimise the
2x2 and 2x4 cases with all convolutions having equal length.
Zita-convolver can't use such tricks as it is meant to be
general-purpose.

> - should /dev/raw1394 appear as soon as I turn it on/plug it in? ( It's not
> doing that, though it appears if I modprobe raw1394 )

Only if you use the old firewire stack. Make sure there are no modules loaded
with firewire in their names. Then make sure ohci1394 and raw1394 are loaded.

> - is the firewire driver freebob or FFADO?

"jackd -dfirewire" will use the new FFADO driver.
"jackd -dfreebob" will use the older FreeBob driver.
Both work fine with the firepod, but only ffado-mixer allows to set the sync-
source. But you can use ffado-mixer to control the settings while using freebob
for streaming:-)

Have fun,

Arnold
party for an old jazz trumpet/flugelhorn player from Fayetteville, NC named
Ray Codrington that all the jazz heavyweights in the area know, love, and
have played with. You may have heard some of his recorded work because of
his recordings in the mid-60s with Eddie Harris, Stanley Turrinetine, and
others. He recorded what later became the 'jazz standard' called 'Freedom
Jazz Dance'.

Well, my brother's wife got tired of hearing us go on and on about what we
wanted to do and told me to 'make it happen'.

It was easy, because Ray has a lot of musical fans and everyone was getting
tired of getting together every decade or so for someone's death or because
of some other severe crisis. We ended up holding the event in the upstairs
above a local woodwind repair shop. The owner (Rodney Marsh) is a jazz
player and has fixed up the upstairs to look like a nightclub so that the
aspiring jazz players who take lessons at his shop will have a place to
play. A classical musician may aspire to a concert hall, but all a jazz
guy is looking for is a gig in a nightclub. What Rodney has created is a
'faux' nightclub because he doesn't have any liquor licenses (and there
aren't any nightclubs around here suitable to play in). There were about
120 attendees of the party over the 4 hours, and the place was always at its
capacity of about 80. Rodney is also a gourmet chef and only got to play a
little bit during the evening. He's played the flute lead on 'Night in
Tunisia'.

It was recommended by someone else that I use a local sound guy who had
recorded Nine Inch Nails, American Idol, Matchbox 50, etc. He is all about
ProTools and he has an elaborate sound setup which included putting 5 mics
on the drums, a $6k Neumann 'head' mic at the back of the room, etc. As
part of the deal, he captured the sound he mixed and gave me a download (on
my disk) of the 16 tracks of raw WAV files.

After a lot of noodling around, I took a few selections from the 4 hours of
music and put them in Ardour where I got a rough mix and eventually
converted it to an MP3 so it would be small enough to download. I hadn't
figured out how to use the effects on 'Night In Tunisia' and I never figured
out how to use the automation on any of them, so I would just 'set it and
forget it'. I'll eventually figure all of it out, and post some more
stuff. I've just got to find a block of time to do this. You would be
surprised at how 'unaware' the jazz guys are of basic recording. They
often wandered around on the stage and one string bass player literally
refused to plug into the DI box for some reason (which means about 30
minutes of the recording doesn't have a direct bass input.

Here are a few pictures of the event:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/1143697@N22/
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2054294&id=66106565&l=096dd86c33

Just so you know, the 'which B3 clone is this?' is actually a real B3 and
leslie. If you listen carefully, you can hear when the tube went out,
taking out the upper keyboard. It was being played by a monster keyboard
player named Chip Crawford. Here's a YouTube of one of his performances:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSadt0OYsNw
The singer is his wife Eve Cornelius. She's a real 'diva' and both of them
believe it is very important that I get a 'release' from everyone who
performed because of her recording contract (a near impossibility and by no
means worth the effort).

Which leads me to what my evil plans are...
;-)

April Fool's is coming. You can get in on this joke if you want to.

Even though all these guys are at least in their 50s and many have been thru
this at least once, all of them are convinced some record company is going
to recognize their innate talent a give them a gazillion bucks for a
recording contract. They all still have stars in their eyes.

Here's the deal:
I need somebody (else I'll have to figure out how) to write an email message
to me telling me that their recording has had 25,000 downloads and is very
popular with the Rave crowd in Prague and Poland. Naturally, the eastern
European promoters want to know if someone can perform live for about
$10,000 plus travel expenses for a show or two, with a concert tour likely.
The email message must have kremvax somewhere in the header and be released
at 12:01 AM April 1 Prague local time. They will want to know if I have
releases for this to make sure it can be promoted properly and meet the
European Labor commissions standards so that visas can be issued.

Later on April 1, I will need to get a second email from ASCAP stating that
anyone who has signed a release is personally liable for the $.05/copy
'mechanical rights' for the 25,000 downloads and asks me will I forward the
names of the people who have signed releases so ASCAP can deduct the
royalties from their pay.

Maybe at this stage the European promoters become angry and withdraw from
the deal, but ASCAP still wants to be paid...

...

Around midnight after this dialog with the 120 people is finished and
everyone is stirred up properly, we'll have to put out a giant 'April Fool'
from Kremvax.

-Mike

That's inaccurate.

One reason that I use VSTs is because they can sync to tempo (with VST
syncing to tempo. LV2 does not currently support syncing to tempo,
>
> A functional GUI.

> Better sound.

Why does the sound improve when I use a convolution-engine as a plugin opposed
to using it standalone?

> Choice.

Choice of the convolution engine? Choice of the gui? Choice of the gui-

Just out of interest Will, I've already tried 2 separate power supply plugs into my keyboard, and I still get an annoying noise when plugging them into an amp/line in on my PC soundcard. The keyboard has onboard speakers, but I can't detect any annoying noise when the keyboard volume is up full, with my ear against the speaker...
>> Rich...
>>
>>
>> > > How can I check if the keyboard/power supply is grounded? The power
>> > > supply
>> > > itself is a three pronged one....
>> >
>> > Then in most countries it is required by law to be
>> > effectively grounded. Next question is if you power
>> > socket is... It should be if it accepts the plug.
>> >
>> > Since you also have this interference with an amp,
>> > but not with the headphones it really seems to be
>> > a grounding problem.
>> >
>> > To only other way to explain it would be to assume
>> > it's some high-frequency stuff which your headphones
>> > would just ignore, but any active input such the amp
>> > or soundcard could demodulate into the audio band.
>> >
>> > If you're using a laptop, does running it on battery
>> > make a difference ?
>> >
>> > Anyway I'd try a DI box, it's good practice anyway with
>> > all instruments.
>> >

> interested in a larger database (193MB), download the following archive and
>
> Is the small one a Free one and the large one the one that is NC?
>
> I am thinking no, that the small one and the large one are both "property of
> the Institute of Communication Acoustics, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, and are
> free for non-commercial use."
>
> but am asking for clarification just to be certain. I am not sure if the DC'09
> stuff is a special version of the thing with a small Free db...
>

Hi drew,

Well, this statement:

"The room impulse responses (presets) which come with
/HybridReverb2/...are free for non-commercial use"

says nothing about the actual licensing for those IRs.

I looked on the Institute's site and could find nothing about any IR
collection and/or licensing policy.

So, from what I read, the plugin is GPL, the library is LGPL, and the
IRs are undefined wrt their license.

Btw, I checked the installation IRs from the original package, i.e. the
smaller collection. Judging from the file names, dates, and sizes it
apears that the included collection is indeed a subset of the bigger set
(I downloaded it too), and presumably covered by the same license, if any.

For further clarification I suggest contacting either Christian or the
Institute.

Hi all,

the Ardour FLOSS Manual is complete (for now), and it looks really
damned good on the screen:

http://en.flossmanuals.net/ardour/

However, Ardour's UI color/contrast scheme (gray on gray) doesn't lend
itself well to the printed page. Adam Hyde and I wanted to ask if there
was anyone on the FLOSS Manuals, Ardour-Users or Linux-Audio-User lists
who could help.

We had the idea that someone with good GIMP skills could work out a
decent contrast-correction that could be applied to all the images to
make them more print-friendly, and then simply execute those parameters
on the entire manual's worth of images as a batch action (preserving the
folder structures, of course!).

The images can be downloaded here:

http://adam.engagetv.com/ard.tar.gz

Please let us know on or off list if you can help with this. I imagine
the corrected images would only be applied to the print version of the
manual as it is available via Lulu.com. (This manual will not be marked
up for profit, by the way!)

Thx+best!

I too can recommend the Antec Earthwatts series. I have the 500W and

Greetings,

I thought some of you might be interested to know that Christian Borss's
HybridReverb2 won 2nd place in the KVRaudio Developers Challenge. The
plugin is a VST in native Linux format. I've tested it in JOST 0.5.5, it
worked fine there, so it should work as well in Renoise, eXT2, and
perhaps QTractor. Free, GPL.

    http://www2.ika.rub.de/HybridReverb2/

Another native VST reverb has been released by KResearch. I tested the
KR-ReverbFS plugin under JOST, it seems to work well there. Free, closed
source.

    http://www.kresearch.com/

The Loomer company has released a new string synthesizer, available for
Linux as a native VST plugin or in a standalone version. Untested here.
The Loomer stuff is commercial software, a bit too pricey for me, but
I've heard good reports from users.
>>> Hi, that should work indeed. I've done it by moving playhead to the
>>> starting point of the to-be-moved section of the song, hitting Ctrl+A,
>>> then hitting S ....
>> Sounds pretty complicated to me. Why not:
>>
>> Zoom to whole project.
>> Select all regions
>> left-click hold them and drag them to the right
>> select all regions that should be moved to the start
>> left-click hold them and drag them to the left
>> repeat until all pieces are in place...
>>
>> I did this some 10-12 times, it is perfectly safe. You need to make
>> sure, that you really select everything so unhide hidden tracks that
>> hold any regions before. The only problem is, that you loose automations
>> for these are bound to the time-line and not to a region....
>>
>
>
> If you're just trying to cut a project in two:
>
> 1) Put a marker in for your chop point, save, and close the project.
> 2) "cp -a" the original project directory to a new directory.
> 3) Open the new directory, and delete everything on one side of the marker. Just select it, and delete, easy. Save. Close the project.
> 4) In the old project, delete everything on the other side of the marker. Save.
>
> You now have two projects, one of which is "up to such-and-such point", and the other is "after such-and-such point".
>
> -ken
>

Well, if I got it right, Brent wants to modify the structure of the
entire song, like e.g. moving the chorus section that now comes after
3rd verse to become after 1st verse already. This section may or may not
include independent regions.

Brent: "[..] take a section out of a whole timeline, across all tracks,
and move it somewhere else [...] I'm working on one of those songs where
all the ideas came together, but
in the wrong order. I've got a section about three-fourths of the way
into it that really should have been the beginning..."

In this case, I really think that selecting all regions, splitting them
(hit S) at start and end points of the to-be-moved section and dragging
these splitted regions all at once to desired location is what has to be
done. Of course, before this, an empty space of similar length has to be
created in the desired location in a similar manner. After moving the
regions to the desired place, the "tail" of the song has to be also
selected and dragged back to correct location. Easy?! :)
> Of course it has to run on Linux (i'm on Ubuntu 9.10 at the moment),
> Any suggestions on what to buy or what NOT to buy?
> If it's possible, I'd like to have something which has already been tested
> with Linux, so that in case of problems I'll have to ask to.

I have an axiom 49 and a korg nanoKontrol (part of this years chrismas
present:). Both work nice with linux and ardour. The axiom is programmed on
the device itself, the nanoKontrol has a free (as in no money) editor that
runs in wine.
