Perhaps. The simplest way to fix this particular problem would be to recreate this 'empty.wav', which was present in earlier versions, so that using newer versions of LMMS to open older LMMS files will no longer throw an error. Alternatively, add a button labelled 'Clear' in the required places to remove any previously defined user waveforms/soundfonts/etc .

The problem is caused by the new resources stuff I bet. I wonder if the resources plugin itself should have a facility for loading up a default (usually dummy) resource per-resource-type?

Empty for audio-samples, default-sf2 for soundfont, new project for projects, etc?

This results in irritating error message boxes popping up when instruments from older LMMS versions are loaded using the development version, as the instruments sometimes have the user-defined waveform set to 'empty.wav', a file which is missing in the development version of LMMS. The only way to get rid of previously defined waveforms is to manually edit the uncompressed project file using a text editor. Could this feature be coded such that it is possible to select no sound file as the user-defined waveform (thereby 'undefining' it)?

On another note, when using LMMS with JACK, every time LMMS loads a new file, JACK xruns and disconnects LMMS. LMMS automatically reconnects after that, but is disconnected a 2nd time. After the 2nd reconnection, everything is fine, but it is rather unpleasant to have 2 error messages warning you that JACK kicked out LMMS every time you load a new file. This is on Ubuntu 9.10, with LMMS grabbed from git.
Cannot clear user-defined waveforms from Triple Oscillator instruments

It seems that it is impossible to 'undefine' user-defined waveforms for Triple Oscillator instruments once they have been defined (i.e. when the file browser comes up, you can't select nothing).

This is on Ubuntu 9.10, with LMMS grabbed from git.

> try to oversample it by what ever means I just get a completely chunky
> and "non-fluent" rendering. (I have tried to oversample it by increasing
> the samplerate up to 192kHz and downsampling in Audacity. I have tried

Hi Andy,

> I'm totally guessing, but it sounds like it could be a denormal problem
> in the freeverb plugin.
> If you do steps 1-7 and then delete the freeverb, does the cpu usage
> come back down?

Yes, it does come down when I remove or at least deactivate the plugin.
That still leaves the questions why it a) works on other distributions
including earlier versions of Ubuntu and b) why there's no CPU clogging
when the plugin is used in the instrument itself instead of in the FX
mixer.

I'm trying to reproduce the bug but I can't. I tried both with a 3osc
track in the song editor and in a bb-track.

I have no problem with freeverb v3, even in a mixer channel. I'm using
the last master branch from git.

But, I opened a song I made a few weeks ago, now it's crackling from
time to time (while cpu usage is far less than 100%...), it happens when
using a knob or at random time.

I noticed the new mixer has an "add channel" button, isn't there any
problem with old projects having a lot of FX channels by default ?

Hi,

That's me who started the french translation, some years ago now, I'm
happy to see somebody else working on it. So, what I noticed :

1) I'm not sure "meter numerator" and "meter denominator" may be
translated in "mètre du numérateur" et "mètre du dénominateur".

I guess "numérateur du mètre" and so on are closer (although not very
meaningful)*

Well there will be only a number one... I gave a quick look to the
ts file but I can't see any other string that would be yours. Please
note and tell us what part of the UI you just translated or you are
working on.
After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), I've got some serious problems
with playing particular songs: The CPU meter goes up and never comes down
again. This is true for LMMS 0.4.5 (stable) as well as git main branch.

I managed to hunt the problem down to the following minimal example:

1. create a new song
2. add a triple osc track
3. make it output to FX channel 1
4. add a single note to the triple osc track at bar 1
5. open FX-mixer (eg press F9)
6. add LADSPA Effect Freeverb (Version 3) to FX channel 1
7. play song and let it run

On my box, it takes ~16 bars to reach pretty high CPU usage (85-95%).

Unfortunally, I can't decide whether this is a LMMS or a freeverb
problem. Strangely enough, it only occurs while freeverb is added to the
FX-mixer. In contrast, if I skip 6) and instead add the plugin to triple
osc's FX tab, there's no problem.

I'd debug into that even further but just now I'm lacking some ideas what
and where to look for :-(

Any suggestions on what to do next? Can anyone reproduce the problem?[1]
Hello Tobias,

>> Shouldn't this be:
>>
>> VoiceGenerators->Downsample->Filters->Effect-Plugins->Mixer ?
>>
> No - one wouldn't fully benefit from oversampling when just using the sound
> generator at higher samplerate.

While this is definitely true, it would clearly circumvent buggy
plugins... and as it seems it mainly comes down to bad plugins
(despite
the "alias-free oscillators"-flag, which still does weird things
(that
decoupled controller-"effect")...).

> When oversampling, LMMS re-instantiates LADSPA
> plugins with according samplerate. Most of the plugins work fine at higher
> samplerate (and respect according settings). There are a few which start to
> sound weird at samplerates other than 44,1 kHz.
>

This was the reason of my suggestion to do the re-sampling at
another
position in the pipeline (whiles to make that clear, in an ideal
world I
would prefer it exactly like it is, that is: down-sampling as the
very
last step in the pipeline...)... ;-)

> If you encounter plugins that do not work well with oversampling, try listing
> them at plugins/ladspa_effect/LadspaEffect.cpp around line 550 and add them to
> the __buggy_plugins list with the highest supported samplerate. LMMS will down
> and upsample before/after processing the plugin.
>

Hey that's cool! So one can get the best out of both worlds...
the ideal
and the other one... :) I will try to find out the plugins which
make
trouble, document that, correct LadspaEffect.cpp for it and
provide a
patch... (or maybe I could get write-access to the repository at
some
time...)

all the best,
No - one wouldn't fully benefit from oversampling when just using the sound
generator at higher samplerate. When oversampling, LMMS re-instantiates LADSPA
plugins with according samplerate. Most of the plugins work fine at higher
samplerate (and respect according settings). There are a few which start to
sound weird at samplerates other than 44,1 kHz.

Hi,

I have done a track wich requires heavy oversampling when rendered
(synced oscillators in the lead voice). That is the alias is strongly
audiable when just playing the song (even with HQ-setting on). But if I
try to oversample it by what ever means I just get a completely chunky
and "non-fluent" rendering. (I have tried to oversample it by increasing
the samplerate up to 192kHz and downsampling in Audacity. I have tried
to oversample it using it's internal oversampling-routines (up to 8
times, simple-sinc up to best sinc, with and without
"alias-free"-oscillators, with and without sample-exact controllers
(which I heavily use for the lead voice...)). It all doesn't help. It
all leads to garbaged output...

I am sorry, that I can't describe it any better... but I can provide
test-renderings of the lead-voice alone (as well as an mmpz), so you can
test it yourself. A try of a better description: It sounds like the
controllers are completly decoupled from the master-clock and only
updated every now and then...

As far as my understanding goes: The controllers (as any internal
oscillator) should derive their time-base from the main-output
sample-clock _ever_. So "sample-exact" controllers is a rather useless
feature from my point of view...

And despite that the sound should lack more and more alias-terms it
should sound _exactly_ the same if rendered on 16 kHz, 44.1 kHz or 1.536
MHz (=192k*8) ... Another remark: I can't think of any method other than
massive oversampling to get wave-table-oscillators alias-free on a given
sampling-rate. So, what exactly is the "alias-free" oscillators-flag
doing? Building up a n*m subsampled wavetable with various preapplied
filters? Just upsampling, filter, downsampling? But whatever it does,
there is something going nut's, too...

Version here is a self-compiled git-checkout: 0.4.90

Does anyone want to have the mmpz-file and or the rendered output? This
is a real showstopper-bug I think...

cu
All audio backends will slightly benefit from the rewrite due to less locking
and no memory allocations/releases in the FIFO reader thread.

Armin Kazmi is working on improving the JACK backend. However it's mainly a
scheduling problem. When running LMMS with root permission (so it can set
realtime priority for itself), there're no xruns even with buffersize of 64
frames. That's already true for all versions of LMMS out there.

I was thinking one would have a MIDI keyboard in that scenario,
although the feature could also be implemented to work with the
built-in virtual keyboard (that uses the keys on the typographical
keyboard) or using the piano roll's GUI keyboard. The ability to record
using the virtual keyboard may already exist.

For me, having the sequencer record a step at a time rather than in
real time allowed for sequences of fixed duration notes to be entered
much more rapidly than by using the mouse and relieves the user of the
stress of having to keep up with a metronome should his playing skills
be lacking (as mine are). Any notes of longer duration could simply be
lengthened manually and the following notes be shifted to the right.

P.S. Jonathan, remember you have to hit "Reply To All" or include

What he may be talking about
is a feature that I used occasionally in
an ancient version of Cakewalk. Instead of recording in real time it
would simply record each note as played using the length/duration
selected in the piano roll. For example, were 8th notes selected in the
piano roll and the user played a 16-note monophonic riff on the
keyboard, the piano roll would fill two measures with 16 notes, each
note an 8th, as if they'd been added with the mouse one after the
other. By "icons" I think he just means the GUI representation of the
notes in the piano roll.
im guessing and i noticed you have a mini keyboard to play around with

Ah, thanks for the clarification, Kevin. This sounds like a good feature to me and I'm sure it can be worked into the piano roll, as soon as Paul lets me have at it again.

On Tue, Nov 17, 2009 at 11:14 AM, Kevin Fishburne <kevinfishburne@...> wrote:

Any notes of longer duration could simply be
lengthened manually and the following notes be shifted to the right.
im guessing and i noticed you have a mini keyboard to play around with
with the various samples.
> let's figure out what ne...
Ok, then let's follow the topic-branch development model for the future (as we
already started a few months ago).

> * Welcome Screen needs to be completed

Yes. This needs some simple work such as adding support for tutorials, add a
"did you know" database somewhere online (and a possibility to ship LMMS with
a default set of these hints). The "Instant MIDI action" button requires the
new preferences dialog to be finished. In the new dialog you will be able to
select a default instrument (e.g. Sf2Player (for which a default sf2 can be
configured)) as well as select the default MIDI device.

For my part I'll focus on the new preferences dialog now. I hope to find some
time this evening to finally add and complete the QSettings-based
configuration framework (I already have in my other project iTALC).

After that my next steps will be to finish resource framework:
* a dialog for managing resource locations (folders, online resources)
* new resource-based project file format
* non-blocking fetch of resources (esp. important for online data)
* fix bugs

> * the crappy automation recording that is in master needs to be moved into
> a branch

Moving that to a separate branch now, doesn't seem to make much sense to me.
I'd rather commit fixes for this directly to master now. If possible, I want
to avoid to revert all commits that introduced automation recording and start
over (possibly with the same code) in a new branch. However it's up to you, as
this is your feature..
