Lockheed Martin has won a $293 million contract to provide network
operations support to the Pentagon and other military networks in the
Washington, D.C., area.

Lockheed will manage, operate, and secure the Pentagon's data networks
and provide 24 by 7 support to users. According the Army's IT Agency,
the Pentagon's network infrastructure includes more than 16,000 miles of
wiring and cable.

Lockheed has been providing outsourced IT services to the Pentagon since
2000, when it won a 10-year contract with the Army to renovate the
Pentagon's IT infrastructure. In that deal, Lockheed was responsible for
providing IT infrastructure and network management "from the wall plate
all the way out to the networks."

In March, the Army awarded a six-month extension to bridge the earlier
contract with the new one. The new contract runs for one year and
includes two one-year options, so it could run through 2014.
