Login module in GBrowse 2.xHello,
we have installed the latest GBrowse 2 from CVS and we discovered that a login/authentication "module" had been implemented (it appears on the right-top corner). Thus, we were wondering, first, what are the plans for such a feature? (support for the "most common" identification systems, e.g. openID); second, whether would it be possible to enable/disable it from within the GBrowse.conf file. Finally, is there any plan to extend such a feature to become a plugin which people could implement (extend) their own authentication system (e.g. LDAP) according to their platform? cheers, Erick ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Come build with us! Re: Login module in GBrowse 2.xSecond that. Our group is interested in this as well, both plugging-in
an authentication scheme (particularly OpenID) and also fine-grained access control (authorization) for feature data. Re: Login module in GBrowse 2.xHi Erick,
It is a work in progress. Currently it supports OpenID and a local authentication system (user name and password registered in a local mysql database). It is not very configurable because the student who worked on it is primarily a javascript programmer and had trouble wrapping his head around the gbrowse conf system. I am planning to work on the system to make it configurable and extensible. I don't think this will be much work, because the connections to the main server code are quite discrete. If you or anyone else would like to take the system and run with it, I'd be delighted. The longer-range plan is to integrate the logins with a system for uploading and sharing tracks. I'm halfway into this now; the idea is that users upload tracks that are stably associated with their user IDs (which in practice are the same as their email addresses). They can make any of their tracks public, in which case other users can search for them and add them to their profile. They can also specifically share tracks with others by typing in their email addresses. An email invitation will then be sent to the designated user. At the current time, I've got a new and improved upload working which indexes the uploaded files and creates .conf files for them. The resulting tracks have much better performance than the original in-memory uploaded files. There remains quite a lot of work to be done before this is a production-ready feature, unfortunately.
