This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, March 4.

The EURASIAN WIGEON continued through February 27 on the LA River adjacent to the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale.

A few BLACK SCOTERS and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS continue off Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo and off Santa Monica Beach.  The mix of scoters here changes frequently.

An adult BALD EAGLE continues to be seen at Bonelli Park in San Dimas.  Also at Bonelli was a single SWAINSON’S HAWK on February 28 and a flock of fifty was above Claremont on March 3.

The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continues at Lindberg Park in Culver City.  It is regular opposite 10963 Ocean Drive.

A GRAY FLYCATCHER continues at Augustus Hawkins Natural Area in Los Angeles.  Look along the south and west edges of the wetland area.  Another GRAY FLYCATCHER continues at Bonelli Park in San Dimas.

The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER at Creek Park in La Mirada was seen through February 27.  Try looking and listening for it in the eucalyptus on the hill.  It can be easy to miss.

Up to two dozen MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS have been present on both the north and south side of Brackett Field in La Verne.  The latest report was of six birds on the north side on February 1.  This area can be accessed along Puddingstone Drive east of Bonelli Park.

The PAINTED REDSTART continues at Monrovia Canyon Park, being last reported on February 26.  Look for it around the Nature Center, although it moves around the area and sometimes down to the Sawpit Dam gate.

The female SUMMER TANAGER continues at Ed Vincent Park in Inglewood, usually in eucalyptus west of the tennis courts.

A rare find was a COMMON GRACKLE at El Dorado Park in Long Beach on March 1.  It was by the second bridge (past Snake Road) after entering the park on the north side of Spring Street.  This bird may have been one of several Common Grackles at this location, but the additional birds need confirmation.

An adult male BALTIMORE ORIOLE continued at the Los Angeles National Cemetery in Westwood through February 28.  It was last seen in eucalyptus near the junction of Veteran’s Ave., Appomattox Dr. and Antietam.  An adult male SUMMER TANAGER was seen just north of this spot on February 27.

VENTURA COUNTY—

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK was just north of the Ojai Meadows Preserve near Ojai on the morning of February 28.

Three LEWIS’S WOODPECKERS were on Santa Ana Road north of Highway 150 and Lake Casitas on February 28.  These birds were in a group of dead sycamores on the north side of the road approximately six tenths of a mile from Hwy 150.  Two more LEWIS’S WOODPECKERS were seen past the gate on Canada Larga Road.

A RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was also along Canada Larga Road in the pepper trees past the roadside memorial.

This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, July 1.

Eight BRANT continue at Malibu Lagoon, being last reported on June 28.

The AMERICAN OYSETERCATCHER at Golden Shore Reserve in Long Beach continued through June 26.  The bird has often been west across the river from the Marine Reserve.  Most recently it was in the small inlet/estuary adjacent to the reserve parking area (metered).  The entrance to the Marine Reserve is on Golden Shore off Ocean Ave.

A few southbound shorebirds have been turning up on the lower LA River.  A LESSER YELLOWLEGS was between the 405 Freeway and Metro Blue Line crossing on June 28 and four WILSON’S PHALAROPES were between just south of Wardlow to the Blue Line on June 30.

The WHIP-POOR-WILL in the San Gabriel Mountains was present and calling through June 26.  The bird is along Highway 2 at mile marker 67.44, about two miles west of Dawson Saddle.  This marker is visible from the westbound side only.  The bird has been a few hundred feet down slope (north) of the road and can be difficult to hear.  Between 8:30 to 9:30PM has been the best time to listen for this bird.

A CHIMNEY SWIFT was seen over Westchester on June 27.

The higher San Gabriel Mountains offer good birding at this time of year.  On June 26, the trail from Dawson Saddle to Throop Peak (a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail) produced a RED CROSSBILL, WILLIAMSON’S SAPUCKERS, TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRES and CLARK’S NUTCRACKERS.  Remember that the Angeles Crest Highway is closed north of La Canada, so access is via Big Tujunga Canyon Road or from the east through Wrightwood.

This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, July 15.

A pair of LESSER SCAUP continue near Irwindale.  The birds are in the quarry pit east of the 605 Freeway and south of Lower Azusa Road.  Access is available via an open gate.

An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was seen over Union Station in Los Angeles on July 14 and four were at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB the same day.

The AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER at Golden Shore Reserve in Long Beach was reported through July 12.  The bird has usually been west across the river from the Marine Reserve (walk the bike path on the east side) but has also been seen in the small inlet/estuary adjacent to the reserve parking area (metered).  The entrance to the Marine Reserve is on Golden Shore off Ocean Ave.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was at the Piute Ponds on July 14.

A RUFF was along the lower LA River on July 9.  It was found near the Rosecrans crossing in Paramount.  It has been looked for but not seen since then.

The WHIP-POOR-WILL along the Angeles Crest Highway was heard through July 10.  The bird is north of the road at mile marker 67.44 (visible only from the westbound lane).  Listen carefully when this bird vocalizes-- usually between 8:30 and 9:00PM-- it can be difficult to hear and typically calls only briefly.  NORTHERN PYGMY-OWLS and FLAMMULATED OWLS have been heard near this location as well.

Two FLAMMULATED OWLS were heard at Buckhorn Campground on July 13 near the pay station.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB on July 14.  The bird was at the now dry north pond.  Remember that for access one must have a letter of permission.  There are no exceptions to this rule.

A RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER was in Soledad Canyon on July 10 near where a family group was found last summer.  The bird of July 10 was along Soledad Canyon Road just west of Soledad Campground.

Remarkable was a singing PACIFIC (WINTER) WREN was found along the Los Pinetos Trail on July 5.  The bird was along the creek near the water tank.  This trail is accessed from Placerita Canyon State Park.

An AMERICAN REDSTART (second year male) was in Exposition Park on July 9.  It was along the east wall of the Rose Garden.
