This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, July 9.
The adult LITTLE BLUE HERON at Del Rey Lagoon was reported through July 4. Del Rey Lagoon is east of Pacific Ave. south of the Ballona channel. The bird has been seen at the lagoon and also along the Ballona channel adjacent to the lagoon. The heron has been roosting at Yvonne Burke Park (formerly Admiralty Park) on Admiralty Way across from the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey
A BLACK SWIFT has been seen near Claremont several times through July 4. This bird is being seen late in the day (after 6:30pm) from Cotal Canyon Road, accessed from the parking lot at 4301 Mills Avenue. The best spot appears to be about ¾” of a mile up Cotal Canyon Road.
The WHITE-EYED VIREO found in Long Beach on July 2 was seen through July 4. The bird was at DeForest Park along the LA River. The bird was initially just north of here near a wet area. Later it had moved to the north end of the nature area.
A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO was at Hansen Dam on July 3. It was near the east part of the main lake. There is a dirt road that runs along the north side of the lake and the bird was in elderberries here and later in sycamores on the nearby ‘mesa’.
The male and female NORTHERN PARULAS continued at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles through July 9. The birds move around the area— the flowering bottlebrush around the coral tree (N. side of the central lawn area) and 100 meters east of the coral tree have been good in the past. However, the birds were most recently in the southeast portion of the property. The male sometimes sings only intermittently.
Also present on the property on July 9 was a SUMMER TANAGER. These condominiums are on the south side of Rodeo Road at Cloverdale. This is private property but birders are welcome. Please be thoughtful of the residents so that access can continue.
On July 5 another NORTHERN PARULA was found along the Rio Hondo near South El Monte. It was seen along the bike path between the 60 Freeway and San Gabriel Blvd. near the spot where the high tension wires run overhead.
Two SUMMER TANAGERS were reported through July 4 along Soledad Canyon Road near Santa Clarita. They are between Crown Valley Road and Agua Dulce Canyon Road at mile marker 14.95. Most of the land here is private property— unless you are able to obtain permission from landowners, please bird from the road only.
This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
