MPLAB 8.40 and Windows 7, don't play nice

Just for general info (whoever he or she may be).

I installed 8.40 on my W7 64 bit PC, replacing v8.36 (which worked
perfectly).

I've noticed the following things with 8.40.

1. MPLAB forgets previous workspaces, and will not reload them even if
manually pointed to their location(s). At start up it will provide a
blank workspace, but actually directing it to a previous one, closes
that and leaves just a blank grey IDE.  The project wizard has to be
run and then any files re-attached.

2. It will NOT recognise the installation of Hi-Tech-C lite version.
As soon as the location is filled in, in the select language tools
locationclicking OK causes it to forget the information.

It does remember the CCS path, though this was part of the MPLAB
install. Co-incidentally so was the HiTech compiler the first time
round, but MPLAB still wouldn't recognise it.

Microchip 'C' for Pic24 works  fine.

3. Clicking on compile causes a screen redraw problem and occasionally
a Windows sharing violation.

I haven't installed MPLAB in the default location of C:\ as I use a
separate partition for all my programming and electronics stuff.

As 8.36 works (or did) I shall probably return to that version.

Colin

Is this info reported to Microchip?
It seems to be very important.

There have been various reports of problems with MPLAB 8.40 on W7, on the
Microchip forum. Most of them seem to be sorted by going back to 8.36.

I have solved the mystery of the disappearing workspaces, though I
would still consider it a bug!

Workspaces will not load if they are saved with the project attached
to a 'null' or non recognised toolchain. Personally I would expect
either a warning on saving 'selected toolchain does not exist' , or
similar, or it to complain when compilation/building of a project is
attempted.

However, the screen drawing problem and the slow response time of
v8.40 performing any of the setup or compile options remains.

Re: MPLAB 8.40 and Windows 7, don't play nice [problem solved - sort of]

My sin in MPLAB/ Hitech C's eyes is not to use the default directory
or drive letter.

For some reason MPLab 8.40 only recognises the Hitech C directory if
Hitech;

1) is installed in the 'c' directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\HI-TECH
Software\PICC\PRO\9.65\bin) and nowhere else.

2. MPLAB is installed in a root folder of whatever drive letter is
chosen (H:\Microchip\MPLAB IDE)

Previously, I had MPLAB one extra layer down and whilst it worked OK
with Microchip C and CCS, Hitech it just wouldn't remember it's
location.

I recall many moons ago, MPLAB didn't like being anywhere but the root
directory of the root drive. Looks as though it is possible the
'plugin' for Hitech C has it's path hard coded rather than taking it
from the actual installation path.

This is annoying, as I try not to install programs on the drive
containing the OS.
