You'll get lots of response on this one.  MRE's are way too heavy for
ultralight backpacking.  I've also found that there's often more food than you need
and there are plenty of great tasting, lighter options.  I guess the only
exception might be when an MRE would eliminate a stove for you but even then (with
the light weight alcohol stoves) I don't know if you'd come ahead...

MRE's are not that bad tasting, but as mentioned
before are heavy for lightweight purposes, even if you
field strip them(Remove all excess packaging and items
you dont need). Not mentioned is how much water you
must drink to process them. I was told(don't know if
it is true) that it takes about a gallon of water to
fully process an MRE through you system. That isn't a
problem for the military, because support personnel
will have plenty of water available. In short, I'd
look elsewhere.

MRE's are relatively heavy and take up a lot of pack volume, and while
I've certainly had my share of them (not as a first choice <G>), I
really don't recommend them for backpacking.

I like the Beef Stroginoff (sp?) and the Chile Mac (spicy!) alot. I
take the 2 serving size and do not need to make another dish for
dinner. This gives me 650 - 750 cal. for dinner. The chicken dishes
are OK too. They have heavy packaging, and repacking saves some
weight. You can also get alot of the stuff in bulk and make your own
mixes in seal-a-meal bags. Look at the food reviews on Gear Test:

Hormel makes some pretty good meals that are sort of like the MRE's.
I've found that they taste pretty good uncooked cold. They are made to
microwave in 90 seconds. and warm up well when unopened and put in hot
water. Same problems as the Mre's -> H-E-A-V-Y
