> SVN of course. I'm not committed against source tarballs though.

It is just standard practice to do so and quite weird to not do so.
Also, if you don't provide tarballs it is hard to know what is the
corresponding source for the binaries (see the GNU GPL).

> I'm aware of Git, though I don't have much experience with it. From
> what I know of Git it sounds awesome, but it also sounds like most of
> its benefits are for projects with large numbers of contributors and
> patches (e.g., the Linux kernel). I don't expect a fork of MTASC to
> have either, so I'm not sure the gains would be worth the migration
> effort.

git is worth using even for a single-person project. I wouldn't start a
FLOSS project using an SVN repository these days. The only thing that
would stop me using git (or other DVCS) would be Windows support, which
some FLOSS people still rely on unfortunately.

Nicolas, even if you do merge Tristan's patches, I think it would be a
good idea to turn mtasc development over to the community and moving
everything to a sourceforge project is probably the best way to do that.
Would you consider doing that? One issue with doing that is the extc
Tristan, if you haven't yet looked at the Git version control system,
I'd strongly suggest doing so. If you need someone to do a good
conversion from CVS -> SVN -> Git, I'd be happy to help out since I have
I've recently had several inquiries off-list from MTASC users that were asking if I could give them a build of MTASC with my patch applied. So I decided to save myself some time and I started a fork of MTASC on SourceForge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/mtasc/. If anyone needs support for classes with more than 32 KB, you can download my builds from there. Currently I have only uploaded Linux builds, but if there's demand for other platforms then I'll build more.

> There's also the 64 KiB limit on function/try/catch/finally/with blocks,
> and maybe more for all I know. My patch doesn't support handling any of
> that; we'd just get an overflow exception when we go to write out the
> SWF. I figure that if 32 KiB classes were already rare, then 64 KiB
> _pieces_ of classes should be astronomically rarer.

Yes, as far as I know nobody has hit the other limits.

But for identifiers, haXe groups all classes into one single swf
actionscript tag. This way it can produce smaller swf. If you have a lot
of code, it's then possible to hit the 64KB identifiers+strings size limit.

> Actually, both limits are already handled correctly by haXe
> ( http://haxe.org) which is improving several things upon MTASC.
>
>
> Interesting. Are there any plans to support AS2 as a front-end to haXe,
> sort of like how the AS2 bytecode is a possible choice for the compiler
> output?

That would not make a lot of sense. AS2 is not a very good programming
language, and haXe adds a lot of useful features such as typed arrays,
type inference and automatic delegates creation.

Looking at the haXe language reference, I agree. It's a much nicer language. I was just hoping it might provide a simple upgrade path for people with existing AS2 projects that are currently on MTASC, that's all. But I suppose that if we'd just be compiling to AS2 bytecode, then there wouldn't be any point in switching anyways.

Hi all,

I've been using mtasc + swfmill to compile a project that was
originally compiled with MMC, but I'm having a problem where the
runtime speed is slower than the MMC version. I'm working with Flash
Lite and publishing out as version 8 (I've tested 7, to no avail).
Performance is key as we're on a very limited platform. Is there any
information that might be forth coming about how mtasc works, does it
compile to similar'ish source code.

The idea of going to mtasc is because of the use of the faster
compiler and the integration with swfmill, that makes it easier to get
more people to work on the project.

Is there any thoughts or ideas about this?

You want to store a reference to the MovieClip object that you just created in a reference variable. That way you can actually work with the MovieClip you just created:

var mc : MovieClip = _root.createEmptyMovieClip("topo", 1);

Now you can target that newly created MovieClip and load an image into it:

mc.loadMovie("topo.jpg");

For more information on the loadMovie method have a look at the Adobe Flash documentation:

> Hi all,
>
> I get this compile error with ocaml 3.11.0:
>
>> ocamlc -c -pp camlp4o parser.ml
> File "parser.ml", line 169, characters 20-21:
> Parse error: [stream_patt_comp_err_list] expected after ";" (in [stream_patt])
> File "parser.ml", line 1, characters 0-1:
> Error: Preprocessor error
> Error while running ocamlc -c -pp camlp4o parser.ml
>
> I note that it works with camlp5o.
>
> The Debian ocaml team gave me the attached patch, which seems to work
> for me with camlp4o or camlp5o. The patch author had this to say:
>
> <zack> looks like in the new camlp4 ";" is a separator in stream parsers and is not accepted as a terminator
> <zack> so trailing ";" should be removed
> <zack> for a proper fix, you should check which is the right syntax (according to stream parser doc)
>
> Is there a bug tracker available somewhere?
>
> Where can I submit patches so they will be applied to CVS? The ones I
> sent to Nicolas in 2007 have not been applied and they are annoying to
> have to merge for every release. Also, have you considered switching to
> git instead of CVS?

The 3.11 patch has been applied.

I'm not sure which 2007 patch you're referring to. If it's the one of
install.ml, I can't apply it because it would not work on systems where
ocamlfind is not available such as Windows.

My hope was to simply edit the .as files and compile with MTASC since I do not have the Flash IDE. I do not need to edit the .fla files. When compiling with MTASC, I would receive several compilation errors. I thought this behavior was strange since I have given this third-party code to a front-end Flash developer, and he had no problems. I then loaded the code into a computer with Macromedia Flash, and the code compiled fine.

The problem is not with MTASC since the errors discovered were truly errors. It appears Macromedia Flash is not as strict when it comes to compilation. A few errors were:
Background threads....

First thing is that you're in a single-threaded environment and you're
not really getting out of that.

The good news is that downloads do happen in a separate process, so
they don't lock up the UI.

In the past, we have built Finite State Machines, and Asynchronous
Command Queues for long-running background-ish processes.

Given these two patterns, I'd say the Command Queue proved most
flexible and useful for us.

Pseudocode for CommandQueue with clients:

// Dispatches a COMPLETED event
interface Command {
    function execute():void;
}

// Dispatches a COMPLETED event whenever queue is empty
class CommandQueue {
    public function push(command:Command):void {
        // add listeners and execute
    }
}

class Main {

    public static function main() {
        var queue:CommandQueue = new CommandQueue();
        queue.addEventListener(COMPLETED, queueCompletedHandler);
        var assetLoader:Command = new AssetLoader('assets/foo.png');
        var xmlLoader:Command = new XMLLoader('xml/foo.xml');
        queue.push(assetLoader);
        queue.push(xmlLoader);
    }

    private function queueCompletedHandler(event:Event):void {
        // Queue is complete, do other work
    }

You probably need to update your local trust cfg file. It's in
different places on different OSes and for different player vesions.

Here is more info:
http://www.abdulqabiz.com/blog/archives/flash_and_actionscript/flash_player_trust_f.php

This problem usually appears with code that is attempting to load
content from both the network and the file system. I believe the
desktop Flash Player will automatically configure itself to support
whichever operation happens first.

If you'd like to avoid this problem and many, many others, you might
want to check out http://projectsprouts.org which is a tool set that
automates the build (and much more) for ActionScript 2, ActionScript 3
and Flex projects.

Good Luck,

Hi,

I'm a Flash / mtasc newbie. I am trying to get Javscript to Flash
communication working, and I am using the Swiff object from the
MooTools Javascript framework (I believe it is based on SWFObject).

I have tried two things:
- Calling a "actionScriptFunction" on the embedded object directly (I
say this suggested somewhere...). This results in an
'actionScriptFunction is not a function' error.
- Using the Swifff.remote function. This results in a
'__flash__argumentsToXML is not defined' error. I have seen other
MooTools codes that use this with Flash, and they appear to work fine
without this error. However, I don't know if they use mtasc.

Can anyone help?

Regards,

Michal.
