It is just standard practice to do so and quite weird to not do so.
Also, if you don't provide tarballs it is hard to know what is the
corresponding source for the binaries (see the GNU GPL).

git is worth using even for a single-person project. I wouldn't start a
FLOSS project using an SVN repository these days. The only thing that
would stop me using git (or other DVCS) would be Windows support, which
some FLOSS people still rely on unfortunately.

waiting as far as I know.

Nicolas, even if you do merge Tristan's patches, I think it would be a
good idea to turn mtasc development over to the community and moving
everything to a sourceforge project is probably the best way to do that.
Would you consider doing that? One issue with doing that is the extc
static library, which is currently an embedded code copy in mtasc. I
guess that could be moved to its own project too.

I'd strongly suggest doing so. If you need someone to do a good
conversion from CVS -> SVN -> Git, I'd be happy to help out since I have
a fair bit of experience with that.

it out of inertia. If you would like to take it over and upload your
fork to Debian (which would then be automatically copied to Ubuntu), I'd
be happy to sponsor you until you become a DD or get DM privileges.

You might want to contact the maintainers of the FreeBSD and Fink
packages too, you can find them using the 'whohas' tool in Debian:

I've recently had several inquiries off-list from MTASC users that were asking if I could give them a build of MTASC with my patch applied. So I decided to save myself some time and I started a fork of MTASC on SourceForge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/mtasc/. If anyone needs support for classes with more than 32 KB, you can download my builds from there. Currently I have only uploaded Linux builds, but if there's demand for other platforms then I'll build more.

Yes, as far as I know nobody has hit the other limits.

But for identifiers, haXe groups all classes into one single swf
actionscript tag. This way it can produce smaller swf. If you have a lot
of code, it's then possible to hit the 64KB identifiers+strings size limit.

That would not make a lot of sense. AS2 is not a very good programming
language, and haXe adds a lot of useful features such as typed arrays,
type inference and automatic delegates creation.

Looking at the haXe language reference, I agree. It's a much nicer language. I was just hoping it might provide a simple upgrade path for people with existing AS2 projects that are currently on MTASC, that's all. But I suppose that if we'd just be compiling to AS2 bytecode, then there wouldn't be any point in switching anyways.

Runtime speed

Hi all,

I've been using mtasc + swfmill to compile a project that was
originally compiled with MMC, but I'm having a problem where the
runtime speed is slower than the MMC version. I'm working with Flash
Lite and publishing out as version 8 (I've tested 7, to no avail).
Performance is key as we're on a very limited platform. Is there any
information that might be forth coming about how mtasc works, does it
compile to similar'ish source code.

The idea of going to mtasc is because of the use of the faster
compiler and the integration with swfmill, that makes it easier to get
more people to work on the project.

Is there any thoughts or ideas about this?

Leandro,

You want to store a reference to the MovieClip object that you just created in a reference variable. That way you can actually work with the MovieClip you just created:

var mc : MovieClip = _root.createEmptyMovieClip("topo", 1);

Now you can target that newly created MovieClip and load an image into it:

mc.loadMovie("topo.jpg");

In general Help contents are your friend, you can also check Kirupa, actionscript.org or flashkit for instance.
Hopefully you have an internet connection...

if you want to start seriously check Colin Moock books complete references on As2.

It is not because you use mtasc that you cannot refer to these sources...

The 3.11 patch has been applied.

I'm not sure which 2007 patch you're referring to. If it's the one of
install.ml, I can't apply it because it would not work on systems where
ocamlfind is not available such as Windows.

if it is no created add " -header 600:500:10 " to your command line

Hi Nicolas

Thanks for the help. I fixed many small errors.

Now I have the following error:

D:\mhn\audio\XSPF Web Music Player\button>mtasc Main.as -swf buttonplayer.swf
Fatal error: exception Sys_error("buttonplayer.swf: No such file or directory")

Is that because the directory? coz buttonplayer does not exist and it is what I wanna t create.

Seems like you're using stopAllSounds() and there's a bug with it. Try
to comment it.

are you shure even if the files will compile whell, you'll get an usable application? what does the fla contains?

and you can't compile bad code, unfortunately for you, luckely for the program.

Background threads....

First thing is that you're in a single-threaded environment and you're
not really getting out of that.

The good news is that downloads do happen in a separate process, so
they don't lock up the UI.

In the past, we have built Finite State Machines, and Asynchronous
Command Queues for long-running background-ish processes.

Given these two patterns, I'd say the Command Queue proved most
flexible and useful for us.

Pseudocode for CommandQueue with clients:

Thanks for info on the flag. It does make sense that the default is to either allow only access to the file system OR the internet.

I've set the flag on my system to allow global access, but good to know users on the internet won't need to change it as everything on the internet for them.

I will take a look at projectsprouts.org

Another question, it appears Actionscript doesn't have any background threads? Any thoughts on loading assets in the background for a MMORPG to minimize delays?

ExternalInterface with flashargumentsToXML error

Hi,

I'm a Flash / mtasc newbie. I am trying to get Javscript to Flash
communication working, and I am using the Swiff object from the
MooTools Javascript framework (I believe it is based on SWFObject).

I have tried two things:
- Calling a "actionScriptFunction" on the embedded object directly (I
say this suggested somewhere...). This results in an
'actionScriptFunction is not a function' error.
- Using the Swifff.remote function. This results in a
'__flash__argumentsToXML is not defined' error. I have seen other
MooTools codes that use this with Flash, and they appear to work fine
without this error. However, I don't know if they use mtasc.

Can anyone help?
