Hi Clark,

Here's an updated README not yet committed - I used it successfully on
SL 32bits:

You're not building the right version of MacGPGME: don't download the
>
> I have made progress. As you said, "read the README". I did that
> and discovered I had not installed gpgme and libgpg-error. I
> followed his steps and with a little work I now have both programs
> installed.
>
> Now, when I try to build GPGME, rather than 1 error, I am getting 17
> warnings and 71 linker errors. As far as I can tell, GPGME
> successfully compiles.
>
> I wondered if my problem is that I installed GnuPG2 rather than
> GnuPG1.4.9. I couldn't figure out how to uninstall version 2 so
> decided to install 1.4.9 in addition to 2.0.12. I hope that did not
> make things worse.
>
> It did not change anything, I am still getting the same number of
> errors.
> update Gordon's book too. I'm certainly willing to do all this, I
> just need to get MacGPGME built first
>
> I appreciate any help you can provide. I don't know where to go
>> Hi,
>>
>> Please read the README file in MacGPGME sources.
>> Then forget about GPGAppKit - use only MacGPGME.
>> Gordon's book is very good, though a bit outdated now; it will be a
>> good start. MacGPGME API is fully documented, and GPGTester is good
>> to look at.

Hi Clark,
> I found an excellent ebook "Programming with GPGME and GPGAppKit on OS
> X" by Gordon Worley.

Gordon once worked on GPG 1.4.x, but he left the project (for lack of time)
when he started his PhD.

> Why should gpgme.h need to be placed in /usr/local/include?

That is likely the default location as expected by the compiler script
when it does not find the file in "." (this directory).

Either the directory "/usr/local/include" does not exist or it is not
listed in your PATH variable. Sourceforge typically expects for shared
libraries to be located in "/usr/local/", so this is usually a good
place to install them. If you don't want the libraries to be shared,
then you can locate them in XCode and adjust the path of the compiler
script accordingly.

> Isn't having it in my XCode project good enough?

This depends upon your PATH variable.
In Terminal, type "env" to get a list of current environent variables.
"setenv" may be used to change these or add new environment variables.

> Also, if it does need to be put there, how do I do that?

What Apple uses for PATH changes from build to build, but it has (in my
experience) never been satisfactory for open source compiles. SO, I
explicitly define it myself in .tcshrc --> you will need to put a similar
statement in the .<shell-of-your-choice>rc file.

My PATH variable assignment command (from .tcshrc) is:
*> # Fix Apple's path problem
*> # "/usr/local/*" for opensource; "/opt/*" for MacPorts; "/sw/*" for Fink
*> set path = ( \
*> /usr/local/bin /usr/local/sbin \
*> /Developer/Tools /Developer/Applications \
*> ~/bin . \
*> )

Note that there are slight syntax differences in how <shell-of-your-choice>
wants this comand to be formatted.

> Thanks mucho for your help!

This will not resolve your problems, but it will bring you one small step
forward. The next thing to check -- do you have *all* of the dependencies
(required shared libraries) in place.

I am going to try to update GPGDropThing and GPGFileTool to use
GPGME. However, I don't want to risk conflicting with someone
else....is anyone else working on this?

I am a rank newby with XCode. I could use a little help getting
started. Is anyone in the US available for a half hour chat some
evening? I sure could use some help getting the GPGME framework
working in XCode. I'd be happy now just to be able to compile and run
the GPGTester. Once I get that going, I think I will be ready to
start working on GPGDropThing or GPGFileTool.

Oh yea, I have been unable to find the source code for these
apps....but that can wait until I get the above task figured out
first. In the mean time, I did apply to become a developer on the
MacGPG SourceForge project. Maybe that will lead to access to the
source code. Then I guess I need to better learn SVN.

So much to learn.....

Hi,

I've been using GPGDropThing for a few years now and have recently
updated to Snow Leopard. Now when I try to decrypt any of my
encrypted files with it, the contents do not get displayed. Instead,
it only shows a single, blank line.

Is anyone else getting this result? Is there a fix available for it?

Thanks,

James
>
> A long time ago I wrote a prototype for an idea I had about PGP use.
> Prototype was working well, but needs refinments to become a real
> app. I no longer have time to work on this, as you all know. I've
> seen a lot of people interested in working on GPGMail Snow Leopard
> port, or simply PGP apps. I'd like to benefit from this momentum ;-)
>
> The idea is the following (I keep the copyright on it ;-)
>
> User has some PGP-encrypted files that he'd like to decrypt, but not
> permanently, and without writing a decrypted copy on the disk. We
> could provide a way for him to decrypt the file, in memory, but
> present the decrypted file in the file system/Finder, using MacFUSE.
>
> In Finder, user right-clicks on a PGP encrypted file. He choose the
> new 'PGP decrypt' menu. MacFUSE creates a new virtual filesystem
> that contains only the decrypted file, as well as information about
> the decryption (signature info for example). This filesystem is
> purely virtual, nothing is written down to disk (except in the VM,
> but it's another story). Then user can open decrypted file by double-
> clicking it in Finder, and can eject the virtual filesystem when
> done. Nothing's left on disk :-)
>
> Using a MacFUSE <http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/> filesystem, I
> could do it rather easily. The only constraint is that user needs
> gpg-agent to ask for the passphrase.
> Project needs to be updated for Snow Leopard (addition of new menu
> item to Finder's contextual menu) and latest MacFUSE, and the
> signature info should be displayed more nicely. We could also try to
> virtually 'replace' the encrypted file by the decrypted one, but I
> havent tried.
>
>

Any online tutorials for the Mac?

A few things I've been able to find are:
1. move CCIDClassDriver.bundle out of /usr/libexec/SmartCardServices/
drivers
2. install libusb

Any other tweaking that I will need to do?
I haven't been able to google up too much more about using it on the
Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.
Summary: GPGMail & Snow Leopard (10.6)

Dear Users,

Current version of GPGMail (1.2.0) is NOT compatible with coming Snow
Leopard's Mail.
New Mail's internals changed a lot, like it did with all major
revisions of Mac OS X, and as Apple doesn't give any documentation nor
any support for such an unsupported plugin, developers have to work by
trials and errors. Based on my experience of previous compatibility
work, I can estimate that the workload to make GPGMail compatible with
Snow Leopard is at least 40 hours, for me.
Unfortunately I no longer have spare time to do that work (I've always
been working on GPGMail during my spare time, not during my work
time).
Some people proposed their help, but at this time no one has been able
to find enough time to actually do the work. For unexperienced people
it will take much more time to do it.
In consequence, there will not be an update of GPGMail for Snow
Leopard in the coming months, not even a beta version.
If serious people want to do the work, I will gladly try to help them
as much as I can; just contact me.

I'm sorry to leave you without GPGMail on Snow Leopard; until someone
does the port, you'll have to rely on Thunderbird and its Enigmail
plugin".

Any queries should probably be directed to the GPGMail list -
> Hi Joachim,
>
> when transferring the GnuPG user folder ~/.gnupg, the trustdb.gpg file
> gets somehow reset (I can't find the proper term).
>
> I suggest you try the following.
>
> Launch Terminal and type:
>
> $ gpg --update-trustdb
>
> you'll be presented with an interactive output where each key in your
> keyring will be listed, asking you to set the trust.
>
> It's important that for your own key or keys, you set trust and validity
> to 'ultimate'.
>
> Hope this helps.
> Charly

Hi Charly,

Sorry, after typing gpg --update-trustdb I get about the message (in german):

gpg: no ultimately trusted keys found

Ok, there are no trusted keys in the key ring. Thats the problem.
> All,
>
> I am using the latest version of Apple Mail and the GPG plug-in. I
> exchange a lot of signed mail messages with Thunderbird users. I have
> had a long-standing problem that I hope someone can share some insight
> upon. Basically, if I sign any message and it is received by a
> Thunderbird/Enigmail user, the signature does not verify and they report
> a CRC error. If I take the exact same message and send it BOTH signed
> AND encrypted, the signature verifies perfectly.

You are posting here using a html-mail. Did you try verifying the
signature with text/plain mails also? Usually html breaks gpg
signatures, because of occasional line wrapping occuring on mail servers.

> All of my keys have a signing sub-key. Is it possible that this is the
> source of the problem?

No, gpg always looks whether the signature belongs to the corresponding key.

HTH

Ludwig
