Yes.

> (2) If reviewers do take patch length into account, what's the best
> way to handle trivial changes that might inflate patch length (for
> such changes be submitted separately?

If they are meaningful to do separately (i.e. tree won't be in a
ridiculous or broken state) then sure. In particular copying or
renaming files or doing large code cleanup is best done separate from
substantive changes.

It can also help to mention if parts of the patch are mechanical and
identify just the most meaningful parts.

Another thing that makes it easier for me review is test cases. If I
can see exactly what behavior change is intended in the form of a test
case, it's easier to evaluate the code changes. This is true even if
adding numerous test cases makes the code change overall bigger.

> (3) Finally, in people's experience, what is the "sweet spot" for
> patch length? (There is an optimization problem here somewhere.)

I make some effort to break a patch down into the smallest meaningful
pieces I can if it seems large, even if I have to do this after the
fact. I particularly like to separate preparatory refactorings from
actual behavior changes. On the other hand, if some changes really are
tied to each other and aren't meaningful separately, I usually bite
the bullet.

Regards,
Maciej

I have a few questions related to patch length:

(1) Do reviewers take patch length into account when considering
whether to review a patch? This is useful to know for those who would
rather have a short patch reviewed more quickly than wait longer for a
longer patch to be reviewed.

(2) If reviewers do take patch length into account, what's the best
way to handle trivial changes that might inflate patch length (for
example moving a large chunk of code or adding an image) -- should
such changes be submitted separately?

(3) Finally, in people's experience, what is the "sweet spot" for
patch length? (There is an optimization problem here somewhere.)

I can add helpful info from responses to the web site where appropriate.

> Today, I have had occasion to install mysql for the first time -- I need it for a backend to a separate program.
>
> Macports has been working fine after upgrading to Snow Leopard and re-installing, and I have been using it for the things I've used it for in the past... no problems.
> I'm a UNIX Systems Administrator by background, with virtually zero DBA experience. (And the little I had was with Ingress under VMS, long ago.)
>
> All of the documentation at dev.mysql.com I can find is for Leopard. (And for their pre-packaged install GUIs).

We have some documentation about the MacPorts mysql5 setup process, somewhat non-intuitively tucked into the MAMP (MacPorts / Apache / MySQL / PHP) how-to page:

http://trac.macports.org/wiki/howto/MAMP

> The macports "port install mysql5" has worked fine... all the components and pre-requsites are apparently installed (someplace, which is a separate problem).

"port deps mysql5" tells you mysql5's dependencies.

"port contents mysql5" tells you what mysql5 installed adn where.

> Searching the web, I managed to find a plist file for starting MySQL under Snow Leopard's Launchd... that works like a champ.

You don't need to search the web; you just need to "sudo port install mysql5-server". It will install an appropriate launchd plist and tell you how to use it. When you installed mysql5, it should have told you this was only the client libraries, and that for a server, you need to install mysql5-server as well.

> However, MySQL still did not work. (The daemon was not continuing to run.)
>
> So I started reading through logs.
> Then I hunted around in the /opt/local/lib/msql5/bin directory and found: mysql_install_db and ran it.

mysql5-server tells you how to run mysql_install_db when you install it.

> That apparently worked, as it created /opt/local/var/db
>
> I then tried to run the admin routine it described...
>
> nada... turns out there are a number of directories and permissions which need to be created and set,a
> which were not done by the macports install of mysql5. -- Namely the /opt/local/var/db and /opt/local/var/run trees.

mysql5-server creates these directories for you with the right permissions.

> Now the Daemon continues to run, but MySQL still needs "initializing."
>
> I don't know if I still need to do more things using the macports mysql tools (and which ones), or if I need to find something specific to generic Mysql.
> I'm assuming I am tripping over all of the things which only ever need to be done once when MySQL is first installed, and never again under updates.
>
> So, I'm looking for some kind of tutorial/cookbook for "installing" MySQL5 on Snow Leopard.
>
> Quite frankly, at this point, I don't know what i don't know, but assume it to be substantial.

Give the MySQL section of the MAMP how-to a try and please make any necessary corrections (or let us know and we'll make them).

Need help activating Macports install of MySQL5 on Snow Leopard

Today, I have had occasion to install mysql for the first time -- I need it for a backend to a separate program.

Macports has been working fine after upgrading to Snow Leopard and re-installing, and I have been using it for the things I've used it for in the past... no problems.
I'm a UNIX Systems Administrator by background, with virtually zero DBA experience. (And the little I had was with Ingress under VMS, long ago.)

All of the documentation at dev.mysql.com I can find is for Leopard. (And for their pre-packaged install GUIs).

The macports "port install mysql5" has worked fine... all the components and pre-requsites are apparently installed (someplace, which is a separate problem).

Searching the web, I managed to find a plist file for starting MySQL under Snow Leopard's Launchd... that works like a champ.

However, MySQL still did not work. (The daemon was not continuing to run.)

So I started reading through logs.
Then I hunted around in the /opt/local/lib/msql5/bin directory and found: mysql_install_db and ran it.

> Remove trailing whitespace (that lint missed).

If you use "port lint --nitpick" it does catch the whitespace issues, but I agree it should have caught that line without --nitpick, since whitespace after a backslash is not a nitpick, it's a functional problem.

How does reparenting across in-place frame navigations work in this scheme? Is a de-parented iframe guaranteed to linger long enough for the new page to get it by name and re-parent it if desired?

On Thu, Dec 3, 2009 at 7:01 PM, Dmitry Titov <dimich@...> wrote:

Hi WebKit,

The recent discussion indicated there is a feeling that SharedScript functionality can be achieved by other means that do not require adding new big APIs: changing iframe a bit (so it's internals survive reparenting into another document) and adding single getWindowByName() API.

Ian Hickson proposed this idea noting that nothing in the spec prevents iframe from staying alive over the reparenting. Some folks from Google met with folks from Apple to discuss and it appears there is a consensus that we shall remove initial code for SharedScript and instead implement changes for iframe and getWindowByFrame(). This will not cause new API and hopefully won't cause compatibility issues since the only scenario that will behave differently is reparenting of the iframe between documents that is hopefully a rare thing. Perhaps more discussion will be needed to nail details on those.

Separately (or related?), we discussed SharedWorkers and the way XHR works in them. It seems a good idea to investigate a "shadow document' solution (as Chrome does for worker processes) when a dummy document is created and used to load resources on behalf of the worker. Also we'll try to fix couple of bugs that prevent Workers to be reliable enough.

Thanks a lot to all who chimed in and helped to arrive to a good solution to the same issues that SharedScript was trying to solve! :-)

Dmitry Titov

The problem in my case was attempting to build curl+universal without
first install zlib+universal. Might be the same for the bug report filer.

Comment(by konistehrad@…):

Attached is the requested failure log. This bug might have something to do
with the fact that the merge step expects curl-config to be a binary, but
it is actually a text script. Not familiar enough with the MacPorts build
system to make a definitive judgment, however.
