MacOS X

Hi

I think the version of tuxpaint we are shipping for Mac from our website (tuxpaint 0.9.21) is failing to start on snow leopard. I've filed a bug on source forge.

I'm very pleased we have http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/kids_learning/tuxpaint.html 0.9.21 available to download from an official looking place. Yay! How did we get it on there? They also say they've had 0.9.21 since 2008 which confuses me as our 2009 package is 0.9.21.

Our Ubuntu downloads section needs to say how to get tuxpaint for versions other than hardy and gutsy. The only reason we made those packages was because hardy had an old version. They can find tuxpaint in add/remove programs or they can install it by typing sudo apt-get install tuxpaint tuxpaint-stamps. Our page makes it look like tuxpaint doesn't run on Ubuntu post hardy.

Hope this helps

Caroline

All about signing up as a Developer-person with Apple, and submitting. :)
And yeah, it's a good place to be listed.

Tell me what to change.  (Or feel free to change it in CVS;
tuxpaint-website is the module in the repository at SF.net.
Once you make the changes, I'll need to manually "cvs update" on the
webserver to make them actually appear on the site.)

Thx!

Hrrmm, looks like a fontconfig problem from the traceback.  Perhaps it
requires a recompile - all I need now is a new MacBook with Snow
Leopard :)  Anyone out there running Snow Leopard who could lend a hand?

Good gravy!  First we're having "won't work on old systems" problems,
now we're having "won't work on new systems" problems!

I hope we don't have to resort to 10 different 'universal binaries' for
Mac. ;)

Well I've got the machine.. Can you tell me what I need to do? I've
already installed the Xcode developer stuff which gives me CVS etc.

Ah, okay, I didn't realize this crash report was coming from your own
MacBook, Caroline (serves me right for not following Facebook more
closely!)

Wait a sec, though, I just realized the traceback looks identical to
one I encountered on my Powerbook several weeks ago.  Do you have
a .fontconfig directory in home?  If so, try removing it and relaunch
Tux Paint once more... any success?  After reinstalling Leopard
earlier this month, for some reason Tux Paint (and more specifically,
fontconfig therein) disliked my .fontconfig directory, and after
removing it, Tux Paint ran fine.

After some googling on "fontconfig FcStrListCreate crash", it seems to
me this is a fontconfig issue (possibly a caching conflict when
different applications relying on fontconfig are run).  The tracebacks
are all identical, and many posts also suggest the "rm ~/.fontconfig"
workaround...

Does the issue come back if, say, you run a GTK+ app, and then go and
run Tux Paint again? :(

Right you are!  Just launched inkscape (installed via Fink package
manager), and thereafter Tux Paint crashes.  My inkscape is
dynamically linked against fontconfig 2.4.1, while Tux Paint is
statically linked against fontconfig 2.4.2.  Both versions are bit
dated...  Caroline, what GTK+ apps have you been running?  Do you know
what fontconfig versions they're using?

We have no need for fontconfig. Clearly, fontconfig sucks.
The solution is obvious. :-)

Tux Paint is listed as "Freeware".

To normal people, that means "crippleware" or "shareware".
Without Apple's stamp of approval it would be "malware"!

Does Apple prevent calling Tux Paint "Open Source (GPL)"?
If so, then this isn't a good place to be listed.

I rm -d .fontconfig and tuxpaint then ran.

I ran inkscape (dmg from their website - uses X11). When I ran tuxpaint afterwards it crashed again.

I'm a bit of an OSX noob and don't know how to identify which libraries various apps are using.

There's a UNIX and Open Source section:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/

I think we are better off where we are in /Games/Kids & Learning.

All the apps in /UNIX and Open Source are also listed as freeware :(

Ah, you installed inkscape from the dmg; not sure how to verify the
fontconfig version in that case (if it's installed via MacPorts, you
can use "port info fontconfig" to see what version inkscape is linked
against).

I'm currently building fontconfig 2.7 as a universal binary, and will
rebuild Tux Paint to see if the issue is still present.

I linked Tux Paint with fontconfig 2.7.3, and am no longer
encountering the crashing problem after running a GTK app.
Unfortunately I'm having difficulty getting the fontconfig configure
script to accept the "-arch ppc -arch i386" CPPFLAGS required to build
a universal binary.

Caroline - perhaps you can help by building the i386 libraries for me,
and then I can manually "lipo" the i386 and ppc libraries together to
get the universal binary.  You need to have MacPorts installed (I
believe you already do?) to provide the fontconfig dependencies, as
well as the OS X 10.4 SDK in /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk/ (you can
install this from the XCode installer).

% mkdir -p /Users/Shared/tuxpaint/src
% cd /Users/Shared/tuxpaint/src
% curl http://fontconfig.org/release/fontconfig-2.7.3.tar.gz -o
fontconfig-2.7.3.tar.gz
% tar xzf fontconfig-2.7.3.tar.gz
% cd fontconfig-2.7.3
% sudo port deactivate fontconfig
% ./configure --prefix=/Users/Shared/tuxpaint --enable-static --
disable-shared --disable-docs --with-confdir="/Library/Application
Support/TuxPaint/fontconfig/fonts" --with-cache-dir="/Library/
Application Support/TuxPaint/fontconfig/cache" CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/local/
include -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk -mmacosx-version-
min=10.4" LDFLAGS="-L/opt/local/lib -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/
MacOSX10.4u.sdk -mmacosx-version-min=10.3"
% make install
% sudo port activate fontconfig

Then send me all the fontconfig *.a libraries that were installed in /
Users/Shared/tuxpaint/lib

Thanks,

Martin

I believe that directory will be generated automatically by fontconfig, if the need arises.  It should work okay without.
