Sarode Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, a giant among giants, passed away last night. Khansahib's talent and artistry were only surpassed by his dedication to teaching and sweet and loving soul.

The following statement appears at the Ali Akbar College of Music website (aacm.org):

Swara Samrat Maestro Ali Akbar Khan
April 14, 1922 – June 18, 2009

Our most beloved Khansahib passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday evening.  Khansahib had been a dialysis patient since 2004, and had been enduring numerous health issues ever since.  The great Maestro had continued his music teachings publicly at the Ali Akbar College until just weeks ago, and continued to teach music at home until the day he died.

The memorial service and burial will be held at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery (2500 5th Ave, San Rafael, CA 94901), Sunday, June 21st at noon, followed by a gathering at the AACM.  Due to the overwhelming amount of phone calls, please send all correspondence via email to inmemoryofaak@... .
All messages will be received and as many as possible will be responded to.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to AACM for the Ali Akbar Khan Library.

A few weeks ago Ali Akbar Khan's son Alam, appeared on Tangents and performed live with Jim Santi Owen. Alam spoke passionately about his father's most beloved project: the Ali Akbar College of Music Audio Project which is referenced above. The goal of this work is to create a digitized database containing the written notation and recordings of 3400 classes and 913 concerts by Ali Akbar Khan. This public library will be a gift to the world, accessible to students, scholars, researchers, and music lovers. The project will take about 4 years to complete but only has funding for the next few months.

Consider making a donation if it is within your means.

Khansahib was trained by his father and Guru Baba Allauddin Khan.

The following is a wonderful snippet from the above link:

"Baba was a musical wizard who could play 200 instruments. However he told his son to concentrate on one and chose the sarode. "At that time no one knew of the sarode," remembers Ali Akbar Khan. "I would go to play in places like Bombay and all they seemed to know was the sarangi." But he felt, "if you want to learn 100 instruments for 100 different qualities you will get it all in one—the sarod. Then why do you need to go to a 100 places?"

P.S. This word from Tangents cat lover and long time listener Sandi Covell:

There is currently  a recall of a popular dry cat food that hasn't gotten much publicity.  It turns out that I have a bag from one of the tainted batches so I stopped feeding it to my guys immediately, of course, and will be returning it to Pet Club.
The brands are Nutro: Natural Choice Complete Care and Nutro: Max Cat.  A total of 7 flavors are affected.
You can get specific information and find out whether you have a tainted bag at:
http://www.nutroproducts.com/press-recall/affected-Products.html
Please pass this on to other cat owners.
