>> Dear Magnolians
>>
>> Unless I am missing something completely tree configuration has
>> always been a pain since all the configuration info is hardcoded in
>> configuration classes - quite powerful but not very flexible. Well,
>> here's a way to change this:
>>
>> ConfigurableTreeConfiguration.java
>>
>> It is a configuration class which reads the config info at runtime
>> (i.e. each time the tree is set up) and displays the tree
>> accordingly.
>>
>> - You need a new context menu item? No problem, just add such a
>> config node to the trees configuration.
>> - You would like to have an additional column with info displayed?
>> Go right ahead and add it to the trees config node.
>> - You want to see nodes of an other type in your tree? Sure... by
>> now you know the deal.
>>
>> Since this also allows you to define actions (menu items, double-
>> click on icons) you can create really flexible trees. For instance
>> the test tree I created displays a hierarchy of three data node
>> types and will open the correct dialog depending on what icon
>> you've double-clicked.
>>
>> - You can read about it and download it here:
>> 	http://www.fastforward.ch/web/ff/dokumentation/entwickler/magnolia_configurable_tree.html
>> - It only works with Mangolia 4.1.1
>> - This file is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but
>> AS-IS and WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty
>> of MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, or
>> NONINFRINGEMENT.
>> - If the Magnolia chiefs think that this is useful I would be happy
>> to contribute it officially to Magnolia
>> - If you find bugs, typos or have feedback, let me know.
>> [/#list]
>> ----
>> This gives me the same FreeMarker template error I get when I try
>> to use ?ancestors:
>> ----
>> Can't get parent of I18nContentWrapper for website:/[rep:root]:root
>> ----
>
> Even [#assign r = content?root] returns the above error message. Can
> anyone confirm that either the ?ancestors or ?root built-in is
> working for them?

If the template has changed significantly in structure, eg, paragraph removed or added a node, we need to update content immediately along with template deployment, otherwise, the page may look broken.

Ideally, the content also needs to be updated at the same time as the template is deployed. Is there any solution within Magnolia, that can help us in this process?

Some of the solutions that come to mind are:

1. Keep the pages cached. Pages get refreshed from cache only when the page is activated. But this solution does not work for pages that are dynamic in nature and cannot be cached.

2. Take servers out of the load balancer one by one. This means we cannot activate content to all servers at the same time. It would be a pain to change the subscriber list one by one as we deploy to each server.

We are interested in some other solutions that people are using for their deployments.

Thanks in advance,
Garima Parakh
Hello,

I am trying to build a reverse proxy in a magnolia v3.6.8 for SEO reasons.
I am using the org.tuckey UrlRewriteFilter which I am calling from my
own magnolia managed filter extending the Magnolia AbstractMgnlFilter.
When I define a forward rewriting rule the request gets forwarded, but
the content on the page misses the JCR content; only the Magnolia edit
bars are visible.
redirect rules work fine, but forward rules seem to break the
filterchain and the CMS filters for content integration are not called.
In the Magnolia filters setup there is a global bypass with the
"dontDispatchOnForwardAttribute"-voter, but because this is an internal
system bypass, I don't know if I should disable it somehow.

I already tried to call
request.removeAttribute(DontDispatchOnForwardAttributeVoter.DONT_DISPATCH_ON_FORWARD_ATTRIBUTE);

from my own Magnolia filter before calling the
UrlRewriteFilter.doFilter() method, but it does not help, the other CMS
filters are not called after a forward.

Any suggestions?

Regards
>> What we are looking for in hour imaging solution:
>>
>> 1 we want to be able to create a new image from the web page we are editing
>> 2 we want to be able to search through the available images
>> 3 we want to be able to see a preview of the images in the selection dialog
>> 4 we want to integrate hour present image service.
>>
>> points 1 to 3 are not supported by dam for as fare as I can see. Yet
>> they are by the media module.
>
> Uh, I never said that you should use either DAM *or* Media Module. All I
> did was explain few benefits of using DAM. Personally I think the Media
> Module itself would benefit from using DAM.
>
> As for the 4th point this is again something DAM can help you with.
> Since it keeps the image (or any other media) encapsulated in the Asset
> and since it supports the variations, it is able to get accross the
> message that UI needs image this and that, but cropped or resized (or
> whatever other ops you imagine with whatever params you choose), and
> then it is up to DAM to either find where such image is physically and
> give link to it, or construct link that is meaningful to your imaging
> service to perform such ops, or for example like DMS DAM hanlder does,
> just call imaging module in Magnolia and tell it, here's the original
> image and here's what I want you to do with it ...
>
> At the risk of repeating myself: DAM and MM are complementary.
>
> Cheers,
> Jan
>> point 4 will have to be achieved through custom work of course, but at
>> least the media module already knows the concept of different media
>> types, as well as proxying for remote media sources.
>>
>> Mind you, I am fresh to Magnolia, so perhaps i am missing some obvious
>> clues. But It seems to me that getting an url to an image is not my
>> biggest problem at the moment. We are looking for a feature-rich media
>> solution and the media module seems to me as the the closest thing
>> available at present.
>>
>> But I would like to know more about how other magnolia users handle
>> images and media.
>>
>> regards,
>>
>> >
>> >
>> >> hi
>> >>
>> >> First off: thanks for the replies. Modifying the module so it can use
>> >> dam is not interesting for us, because we don't intent on using that.
>> >
>> > You might want to ask why it should be interesting to you - if module
>> > supported DAM, you can use the functionality already provided by STK
>> > such as stk.getAssetLink() etc and you can also use predefined macros
>> > provided by STK such as image macro and then simply creating links to
>> > your images like:
>> >
>> > [#include "/templating-kit/paragraphs/macros/image.ftl"/]
>> > [@image image=model.image! imageClass=model.imageClass/]
>> >
>> > where "image" is an DAM asset resolved by the ImageModel
>> >
>> >    public Asset getImage() {
>> >        return STKUtil.getAsset(content, getImageName(),
>> > getImageVariationName());
>> >    }
>> >
>> > this is much easier to use in the templates then resolving the things
>> > yourself as you are trying to do below, plus you get the flexibility to
>> > mix the sources of images without having to care about differences in
>> > the templates themselves.
>> >
>> > Cheers,
>> > Jan
>> >
>> >> What we are actually looking for is a way to work with different media
>> >> from different sources. We already have an image server that contains
>> >> a huge amount of data, and one of the things i would like to find out
>> >> is if the meda module can be extended (by us :-) ) to integrate with
>> >> this system.
>> >>
>> >> But first things first. I got the selection of images to work, and now
>> >> i actually want to show the image using The el functions that are part
>> >> of the media tld.
>> >>
>> >> My assumption is that i should first use getContent([mediaSelection])
>> >> to get the content node, and then something like getUrl([contentNode])
>> >> and so on.
>> >>
>> >> Perhaps to my shame I find it a trifle hard to access these functions
>> >> in my freemaker template. I am new to freemaker, but it seems
>> >> straightforward.
>> >>
>> >> First declare the taglib:
>> >> [#assign media=JspTaglibs["http://net.sourceforge.openutils/mgnlMedia"]]
>> >>
>> >> Then get the content Node:
>> >> ${@media.getNode("b83d0546-759c-43a3-8ceb-d63a2eda5723")}
>> >> does not work: Expression @media is undefined
>> >>
>> >> [@media.getNode("b83d0546-759c-43a3-8ceb-d63a2eda5723") /]
>> >> does not work: Expression media.getNode is undefined
>> >>
>> >> [@media.getNode "b83d0546-759c-43a3-8ceb-d63a2eda5723" /]
>> >> does not work: media.getNode not found
>> >>
>> >>
>> >> so, I'm out of ideas. Could anyone point my nose in the right direction please?
>> >>
>> >> regards,
>> >> >> to select a picture it either as to be activated or you have to turn on the
>> >> >
>> >> > Another approach might be to modify said media module to make it dam-aware;
>> >> >>> I am looking at the openmindLab media module, as a basis for hour
>> >> >>> media management. The problem is how to integrate it with the stk.
>> >> >>> I found the 'mediaSelection' control and naively added an instance to
>> >> >>> the stkTextImage dialog, and this indeed created a 'select' button
>> >> >>> which opens the selection dialog.
>> >> >>> But alas, I can not select an image here. Perhaps some configuration
>> >> >>> is missing in the control configuration. What's missing?
>> >> >>>
>> >> >>> But I suppose that if this step would work, the image would not be
>> >> >>> displayed in the site, as the that would require changes to the
>> >> >>> stkTextImage paragraph template.
>> >> >>>
>> >> >>> So, how to go about this? how do I integrate the media module with the
>> >> >>> skt? Any hints? exaples?
Hi Ruben,

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure I understand your response properly. The JSP template would only be written once by a developer. However, the content author will be able to change their content using different variables when ever they want.

For example, lets assume it's coming into xmas period and content authors (without any assistence from developers) want to change the welcome message to say something about xmas. They would click edit on the welcome paragraph of the page which would pop up a dialog. Assume the dialog is based on a the WYSIWYG control. Inside the textarea they would change the content to be something like:

<p>Hi ${nickname} - Season's greetings! Your account balance is currently ${accountBalance}. Click here to spend that balance on a present!</p>

In the template based on solution (1) below it might look something like this:

------------------
welcomeMessage.jsp
------------------
<div>
        <xyz:paramterisedOut nodeDataName="wysiwyg" />
</div>
------------------

Does that explain things further?

Cheers,

Brent,

You could use the jsp templating module and allow the content developers
to use jsp tags or you could modify the jsp templating a bit and convert
your own tag language to the actual jsp tags that would have to be at
that place. The jsp then only has to be refreshed once a content dev
changes the actual node.
> G'day Magnolians,
>
> It's been a while since I've emailed to this list. I've been busy
> demoing and presenting Magnolia to some of our clients. The feedback
> is awesome.
>
> A question that has come up a number of times from our clients is with
> respect to blending text retrieved from a database with text entered
> via a content author. Similar to the way the forms module works in
> that confirmation emails and thank you pages can embed content
> submitted through the form in emails or pages (see
> http://demoauthor.magnolia-cms.com/demo-project/service/contact.html,
> Edit Form Settings -> Confirmation E-Mail).
>
> I wanted to get some feedback on the best way to do this. In our case,
> we'll always be using JSP templates - not Freemaker. Imagine I have a
> magnolia based website where the customers can log into. After logging
> in we want to display a page that contains a welcome paragraph such as:
>
> <p>Hi ${nickname} - welcome back. You last logged in on
> ${lastLoginDate} and your account balance is currently
> ${accountBalance}.</p>
>
> The key is we want the welcome message to be content managed - not
> hardcoded. Basically we want to expose a bunch of pre-determined
> variables that content authors can embed where ever they like inside
> text based paragraphs. Assume these variables are previously loaded
> into HTTP session scope through some filter.
>
> How would you do this?
>
> I can think of two ways but maybe there are easier ways:
>
> 1. Write our own JSP Custom Tag that replaces the ${xx} found in
> content with corresponding session variables prior to writing the
> content to the response stream.
>
> 2. Write our own base paragraph renderer that does the same as the
> custom tag.
>
> Is there any easier way?
>
> Hopefully I've explained myself well enough.
>
> Cheers,
>
> >>> the multi language mechanism works ok.
> >> This is the issue, I suppose... there could be problem with class of ETK...
> >> What you described happened to me too..
> >
> > issue == feature.
> > Since ETK enables multisite support, it also sets the localization way
> > to be handled by sites, expecting you to have one site per language. If
> > this is not what you want, you simply change it back.
>
> Sure Jan,
> I strongly agree with you and also with Magnolia way-of-think.
> In ETK handling languages is a site duty.
> But if I leave the i18n content implementation class to
> info.magnolia.module.extendedtemplatingkit.i18n.ETKI18nContentSupport
> the i18n mechanism does not work.

um, what part of "the mechanism" doesn't work?
Try to explain what you wanted to achieve and what you did to get it and
how it "didn't work" ... maybe we can find out what the problem is.

Jan

> If I put back the original class
> (info.magnolia.cms.i18n.DefaultI18nContentSupport) it goes back to work,
> but with global language support, for all the sites...
>
> I don't know if it is a lack on my side (an also on Bozidar side, maybe
> someone else?...) or a bug, I didn't have enough time to go deeper on this.

> hello Jan
>
>
>

>
>
>
> >
> >
> >>
> >
> >
> > [@image image=model.image! imageClass=model.imageClass/]
> >
> > where "image" is an DAM asset resolved by the ImageModel
> >
> >    public Asset getImage() {
> >        return STKUtil.getAsset(content, getImageName(),
> > getImageVariationName());
> >    }
> >
> > this is much easier to use in the templates then resolving the things
> > yourself as you are trying to do below, plus you get the flexibility to
> > mix the sources of images without having to care about differences in
> > the templates themselves.
> >
> > Cheers,
> >
> >>
> >>
> >>
> >>
> >>
> >> ${@media.getNode("b83d0546-759c-43a3-8ceb-d63a2eda5723")}
> >> does not work: Expression @media is undefined
> >>
> >> [@media.getNode("b83d0546-759c-43a3-8ceb-d63a2eda5723") /]
> >> does not work: Expression media.getNode is undefined
> >> >>>
> >> >>>
> >> >>> So, how to go about this? how do I integrate the media module with the
>>>> Templating Kit > Dialog Definitions > pages/home/stkHomeProperties.
>>>> Does that make sense or would you place a dialog for site-wide
>>>> settings elsewhere?
>>> The point 2 is a better option, I think...
>> What do you mean exactly?
>
> I would like to say that you can define global configuration and page
> configuration. If no page configuration is found, a global is taken. In
> this case you are more flexible.
> Of course, only if your statistics engine / service let you do so...

The requirement for page-specific settings has been dropped for now, so
that's been taken care of. But I haven't figured out how to access the
site-wide properties that are stored under the home page from an
arbitrarily nested subpage. How would you do this?

I'd have to know how many levels I need to go up to reach the home page
or run some kind of while loop that accesses the parent until I've
reached the home page which has the site-side properties. It seems there
are utility functions for node children, not not any (recursive) parent
functions. Am I missing something here?

>>> I think, as Gregory suggested, that you can extend STK main.ftl
>>> including a custom template.
>> Extend? You mean replace main.ftl with a version that includes my custom
>> template? That's what I did for now, and that works. But it feels dirty.
>
> This is one option.
> STK default implementation doesn't let you define a custom httpHeader,
> so you can use theme capabilities of including CSS / JS (simply defining
> them) or you can extends FTL templates with your own.

I'd like this module to be independent from any themes, so I guess I'll
stay on the track of extending the main.ftl.

> I think no other easy roads are possible.

Ok, thanks for thinking along.
Hi Ernst,

>> If it turns out that you can't you can perhaps extend the
>> FreemarkerTemplateRenderer or STKTemplateRenderer class and add a
>> reference to this class to the template rendering context.
>
>I found out that indeed the TemplateRenderer class has to be extended.
>It turns out you have to wrap any java objects you want in your
>freemaker objects in so called 'bean wrappers'. here is a snippet of
>code that shows how to wrap some class in such a way that all static
>methods become available:
>
>BeansWrapper wrapper = BeansWrapper.getDefaultInstance();
>TemplateHashModel staticModels = wrapper.getStaticModels();
>TemplateHashModel fileStatics =
>    (TemplateHashModel) staticModels.get("java.io.File");
>
>assuming 'root' is your context object, you can:
>root.put("File", fileStatics);
>
>and then in the template do this:
><#list File.listRoots() as fileSystemRoot>...</#list>
>
>So this can also be done with static EL function methods.

Thats cool!

I think a FreemarkerHelper subclass is the correct place to do such thing. One can subclass FreemarkerTemplateRenderer (Justas STKParagraphRenderer does) and construct it with an own helper class - so you have an own renderer for your project.

Also you can implement model classes and use MediaEl within it. It makes sense as a kind of MVC pattern anyway.

I checked the freemarker code and it became obvious to me that indeed there is no generic taglib functions support. (Correct me if I am wrong!)
Anyway it might collide with the freemarker EL syntax, as i did like

[#assign media=JspTaglibs["http://net.sourceforge.openutils/mgnlMedia"]]
<img src="${contextPath}/${media}" alt="XXX" />

it resulted in

freemarker.core.NonStringException: Error on line 12, column 36 in templating-kit/paragraphs/teasers/internalPage.
Expecting a string, date or number here, Expression media is instead a freemarker.ext.jsp.TaglibFactory$Taglib

Of course ${media:something}, ${media.something}... no way.

However I can go on with the mentioned solution in our project.

Thanks a lot, regards
>>> Does that make sense or would you place a dialog for site-wide
>>> settings elsewhere?
>>
>> The point 2 is a better option, I think...
>
> What do you mean exactly?

I would like to say that you can define global configuration and page
configuration. If no page configuration is found, a global is taken. In
this case you are more flexible.
Of course, only if your statistics engine / service let you do so...

>>> 2. Actually, I only created a reference there and created the actual
>>> dialog nodes under /modules/<module-name>/dialogs/tabSitestat. Is
>>> that recommended over putting the tab directly in the STK tree?
>>
>> Just for sharing purpose.
>> If you intend to use that tab somewhere else, it is a good practice :-)
>> So you can include it in stkHomeProperties, stkPageProperties, ...
>
> The dialog is for site-wide settings, so I don't intend to use that tab
> anywhere else but under stkHomeProperties. I guess it doesn't really
> matter then.

As I said, it depends on you :-)

>> I think, as Gregory suggested, that you can extend STK main.ftl
>> including a custom template.
>

I think no other easy roads are possible.
> unsupported.
> There is no information (i could find) on the web about freemaker and
> EL functions.
>
> But there is one thing I still need to try: As EL functions tend to be
> static methods, it should be possible to call them directly. I don't
> know enough about freemarker yet to be sure you can just do something
> like ${path.to.Class.staticMethod(param1, paran2)}, but I expect you
> can.
>

BeansWrapper wrapper = BeansWrapper.getDefaultInstance();
TemplateHashModel staticModels = wrapper.getStaticModels();
TemplateHashModel fileStatics =
    (TemplateHashModel) staticModels.get("java.io.File");

assuming 'root' is your context object, you can:
root.put("File", fileStatics);

and then in the template do this:
<#list File.listRoots() as fileSystemRoot>...</#list>

So this can also be done with static EL function methods.
> question?
>

Nope, it does not. This is indeed something I stumbled upon myself,
asked before on this list, and am currently inclined to believe
unsupported.
There is no information (i could find) on the web about freemaker and
EL functions.

But there is one thing I still need to try: As EL functions tend to be
static methods, it should be possible to call them directly. I don't
know enough about freemarker yet to be sure you can just do something
like ${path.to.Class.staticMethod(param1, paran2)}, but I expect you
can.

If it turns out that you can't you can perhaps extend the
FreemarkerTemplateRenderer or STKTemplateRenderer class and add a
reference to this class to the template rendering context.

regards,

Ok, so my module has two parts now.

1. A dialog tab under stkHomeProperties which allows editing the
site-wide settings for statistics.
2. A custom FreeMarker template that is included in the main.ftl.

Now all I need to connect these two. I want to access the properties
that are saved by the dialog in my FreeMarker template. How do I get to
these properties from a random page on the website? I found I can use
content?parent to access a parent node, but how would I get a reference
to the home content node for any subpage?

For the homepage:
* content?node_type is mgnl:content
* content?parent?node_type is rep:root

But of course I should be able to access the home node from any
arbitarily nested page to get this to work. Can I create some kind of
while loop to walk up the tree? Or is there another way? Or am I just
storing the site-wide settings in the wrong place?
>>> BUT there is also another simpler way.
>>>
>>> You can add the vars you need extending a dialog.
>>> Simply add a new tab to the STK pageDialog. In that tab you can place
>>> all the variables you need. They will be left empty by default.
>>> In this case, you can avoid to write java code and you will obtain the
>>> same result.
>> I also tried this approach (before actually) and I have another round of
>> questions.
>>
>> 1. For the site-wide statistics settings I added a new tab under
>> Templating Kit > Dialog Definitions > pages/home/stkHomeProperties. Does
>> that make sense or would you place a dialog for site-wide settings
>> elsewhere?
>
> The point 2 is a better option, I think...

What do you mean exactly?

>> 2. Actually, I only created a reference there and created the actual
>> dialog nodes under /modules/<module-name>/dialogs/tabSitestat. Is that
>> recommended over putting the tab directly in the STK tree?
>
> Just for sharing purpose.
> If you intend to use that tab somewhere else, it is a good practice :-)
> So you can include it in stkHomeProperties, stkPageProperties, ...

The dialog is for site-wide settings, so I don't intend to use that tab
anywhere else but under stkHomeProperties. I guess it doesn't really
matter then.

>> 4. The most important question right now: I can set site-wide settings
>> using this dialog, but where do I put the JavaScript code? This code
>> should be included in every page and needs to be able to access to these
>> settings, so I believe I can't put it under Resources >
>> templating-kit/js/all because there I have no access to
>> site/page-specific settings. Or am I wrong about that? I would really
>> appreciate some guidance on this point.
>
> I think, as Gregory suggested, that you can extend STK main.ftl
> including a custom template.

Extend? You mean replace main.ftl with a version that includes my custom
template? That's what I did for now, and that works. But it feels dirty.

Yes, this is possible, but this means my statistics module will modify
main.ftl (or footer.ftl, so some other core template). This is what I
did now and it works, but what if another module also wants to insert a
template by modifying the same template? Only one module can have its
way then.

I guess that in that case I might need to create a module that includes
templates from a specific location in the tree in a specific template
and then have those template-modifying modules depend on that module or
something. For now I'll just let my statistics module override main.ftl.
