STK 1.2 RC2 and Magnolia EE 4.2 RC2 released

Hi,

A very silly bug slipped into the STK demo project in the very last
moment. To not let that destroy the first impression I have released:
- STK 1.2 RC2 [1]
- Enterprise Edition 4.2 RC2 [2]

The Community Edition is not affected and sticks to formerly released
version 4.2 RC1

Magnolia 4.2 RC1 has been released

Hi,

We have just released Magnolia 4.2 RC1. The files are available for
download for both version, the Community Edition[1] and the Enterprise
Edition[2].

Be aware of the fact that the WebDAV support (you find it in the add-
ons of the Enterprise Edition) is still an alpha version and
experimental.

Hi Nils,

Looks like a bug to me (or at least something we should support/handle
in Magnolia). It would help if you could report this on Jira; what
would help *a lot*, is if you could add a (failing) test to
info.magnolia.freemarker.FreemarkerHelperTest (in magnolia-core) to
demonstrate this.

Deploying template files to production

Dear Magnolians,
Our production environment has two Magnolia public servers in front of a load balancer. Our template files are stored in the file system. We have an issue when we deploy template changes to Production. If the template has changed significantly in structure, eg, paragraph removed or added a node, we need to update content immediately along with template deployment, otherwise, the page may look broken.

Ideally, the content also needs to be updated at the same time as the template is deployed. Is there any solution within Magnolia, that can help us in this process?

Some of the solutions that come to mind are:

1. Keep the pages cached. Pages get refreshed from cache only when the page is activated. But this solution does not work for pages that are dynamic in nature and cannot be cached.

2. Take servers out of the load balancer one by one. This means we cannot activate content to all servers at the same time. It would be a pain to change the subscriber list one by one as we deploy to each server.

We are interested in some other solutions that people are using for their deployments.

The error is on the line where current?parent?? is checked. According to
the FreeMarker documentation for the ?parent built-in [0] node?parent??
should evaluate to false for the root node, but all I'm getting is this
I18nContentWrapper error. :(

Is the ?ancestors built-in working for anybody else? Does anyone know
how I can get this work?

[reverse-proxy with tuckey UrlRewritefilter] How to get CMS filters dispatch on forwards?

Hello,

I am trying to build a reverse proxy in a magnolia v3.6.8 for SEO reasons.
I am using the org.tuckey UrlRewriteFilter which I am calling from my
own magnolia managed filter extending the Magnolia AbstractMgnlFilter.
When I define a forward rewriting rule the request gets forwarded, but
the content on the page misses the JCR content; only the Magnolia edit
bars are visible.
redirect rules work fine, but forward rules seem to break the
filterchain and the CMS filters for content integration are not called.
In the Magnolia filters setup there is a global bypass with the
"dontDispatchOnForwardAttribute"-voter, but because this is an internal
system bypass, I don't know if I should disable it somehow.

I already tried to call
request.removeAttribute(DontDispatchOnForwardAttributeVoter.DONT_DISPATCH_ON_FORWARD_ATTRIBUTE);

from my own Magnolia filter before calling the
UrlRewriteFilter.doFilter() method, but it does not help, the other CMS
filters are not called after a forward.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Right now I have no paragraphs in my
module and I wasn't planning on using any. I wanted to use the
?ancestors built-in in FreeMarker to get to the home page and then read
the statistics properties from that node, but using ?ancestors gives me
an error (see my separate post about this problem). Isn't that a good
solution?

Thanks for the info
It makes me realize all the more that there is too much I don't yet
know. I do understand what you are saying though, and partially
reached the same conclusions myself. It is a pity dam-support is not
well documented, and it seems to me that we need to do a lot of work
to get a workable system for hour media (we are, by the way, a
meda/television company).

I will take your remarks at heart as we will find hour way towards a
good solution.

I traced the message to:

}

which in your case doesn't seem to be a problem as you are trying to log
in as a superuser anyway. Can you post somewhere (pastebin.com for
example) the whole log file and send here the link to it?

just follow the image... once you have the first tab, you can right click and copy... then you only change what you need...

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure I understand your response properly. The JSP template would only be written once by a developer. However, the content author will be able to change their content using different variables when ever they want.

For example, lets assume it's coming into xmas period and content authors (without any assistence from developers) want to change the welcome message to say something about xmas. They would click edit on the welcome paragraph of the page which would pop up a dialog. Assume the dialog is based on a the WYSIWYG control. Inside the textarea they would change the content to be something like:

<p>Hi ${nickname} - Season's greetings! Your account balance is currently ${accountBalance}. Click here to spend that balance on a present!</p>

In the template based on solution (1) below it might look something like this:

um, what part of "the mechanism" doesn't work?
Try to explain what you wanted to achieve and what you did to get it and
how it "didn't work" ... maybe we can find out what the problem is.

Uh, I never said that you should use either DAM *or* Media Module. All I
did was explain few benefits of using DAM. Personally I think the Media
Module itself would benefit from using DAM.

As for the 4th point this is again something DAM can help you with.
Since it keeps the image (or any other media) encapsulated in the Asset
and since it supports the variations, it is able to get accross the
message that UI needs image this and that, but cropped or resized (or
whatever other ops you imagine with whatever params you choose), and
then it is up to DAM to either find where such image is physically and
give link to it, or construct link that is meaningful to your imaging
service to perform such ops, or for example like DMS DAM hanlder does,
just call imaging module in Magnolia and tell it, here's the original
image and here's what I want you to do with it ...

At the risk of repeating myself: DAM and MM are complementary.

Look for header and footer ftl. They use paragraphs defined only in main
page.

The requirement for page-specific settings has been dropped for now, so
that's been taken care of. But I haven't figured out how to access the
site-wide properties that are stored under the home page from an
arbitrarily nested subpage. How would you do this?

I'd have to know how many levels I need to go up to reach the home page
or run some kind of while loop that accesses the parent until I've
reached the home page which has the site-side properties. It seems there
are utility functions for node children, not not any (recursive) parent
functions. Am I missing something here?

Thats cool!

I think a FreemarkerHelper subclass is the correct place to do such thing. One can subclass FreemarkerTemplateRenderer (Justas STKParagraphRenderer does) and construct it with an own helper class - so you have an own renderer for your project.

Also you can implement model classes and use MediaEl within it. It makes sense as a kind of MVC pattern anyway.

I checked the freemarker code and it became obvious to me that indeed there is no generic taglib functions support. (Correct me if I am wrong!)
Anyway it might collide with the freemarker EL syntax, as i did like

[#assign media=JspTaglibs["http://net.sourceforge.openutils/mgnlMedia"]]
<img src="${contextPath}/${media}" alt="XXX" />

it resulted in

freemarker.core.NonStringException: Error on line 12, column 36 in templating-kit/paragraphs/teasers/internalPage.
Expecting a string, date or number here, Expression media is instead a freemarker.ext.jsp.TaglibFactory$Taglib

Of course ${media:something}, ${media.something}... no way.

However I can go on with the mentioned solution in our project.

STK default implementation doesn't let you define a custom httpHeader,
so you can use theme capabilities of including CSS / JS (simply defining
them) or you can extends FTL templates with your own.

I think no other easy roads are possible.

That's right. But i think there is a clear distinction between EL
functions, which actually is a feature of the (jsp) Expression
Language, and jsp Tags. The two are bound together only in the tld, I
suppose. Support for tag libraries and thus tags is well documented
(and used by magnolia), but the same does not seem to apply to EL
functions.
But I'm not sure. I just couldn't find any documentation on this
subject, and my attempts to use EL functions from a taglib. did not
succeed :-(

That page says: "FreeMarker optionally supports JSP tag libraries, and

I found out that indeed the TemplateRenderer class has to be extended.
It turns out you have to wrap any java objects you want in your
freemaker objects in so called 'bean wrappers'. here is a snippet of
code that shows how to wrap some class in such a way that all static
methods become available:

BeansWrapper wrapper = BeansWrapper.getDefaultInstance();
TemplateHashModel staticModels = wrapper.getStaticModels();
TemplateHashModel fileStatics =
(TemplateHashModel) staticModels.get("java.io.File");

assuming 'root' is your context object, you can:
root.put("File", fileStatics);

and then in the template do this:
<#list File.listRoots() as fileSystemRoot>...</#list>

So this can also be done with static EL function methods.

Sure Jan,
I strongly agree with you and also with Magnolia way-of-think.
In ETK handling languages is a site duty.
But if I leave the i18n content implementation class to
info.magnolia.module.extendedtemplatingkit.i18n.ETKI18nContentSupport
the i18n mechanism does not work.
If I put back the original class
(info.magnolia.cms.i18n.DefaultI18nContentSupport) it goes back to work,
but with global language support, for all the sites...

I don't know if it is a lack on my side (an also on Bozidar side, maybe
someone else?...) or a bug, I didn't have enough time to go deeper on this.

There is no information (i could find) on the web about freemaker and
EL functions.

But there is one thing I still need to try: As EL functions tend to be
static methods, it should be possible to call them directly. I don't
know enough about freemarker yet to be sure you can just do something
like ${path.to.Class.staticMethod(param1, paran2)}, but I expect you
can.

If it turns out that you can't you can perhaps extend the
FreemarkerTemplateRenderer or STKTemplateRenderer class and add a
reference to this class to the template rendering context.

Ok, so my module has two parts now.

1. A dialog tab under stkHomeProperties which allows editing the
site-wide settings for statistics.
2. A custom FreeMarker template that is included in the main.ftl.

Now all I need to connect these two. I want to access the properties
that are saved by the dialog in my FreeMarker template. How do I get to
these properties from a random page on the website? I found I can use
content?parent to access a parent node, but how would I get a reference
to the home content node for any subpage?

For the homepage:
* content?node_type is mgnl:content
* content?parent?node_type is rep:root

But of course I should be able to access the home node from any
arbitarily nested page to get this to work. Can I create some kind of
while loop to walk up the tree? Or is there another way? Or am I just
storing the site-wide settings in the wrong place?

The dialog is for site-wide settings, so I don't intend to use that tab
anywhere else but under stkHomeProperties. I guess it doesn't really
matter then.

Extend? You mean replace main.ftl with a version that includes my custom
template? That's what I did for now, and that works. But it feels dirty.

Yes, this is possible, but this means my statistics module will modify
main.ftl (or footer.ftl, so some other core template). This is what I
did now and it works, but what if another module also wants to insert a
template by modifying the same template? Only one module can have its
way then.

I guess that in that case I might need to create a module that includes
templates from a specific location in the tree in a specific template
and then have those template-modifying modules depend on that module or
something. For now I'll just let my statistics module override main.ftl.
