my bluetooth dongle with the above chip worked fine under 2008.1 using
kbluetooth but doesn't under 2009.1, the bluetooth service reports it is
running and hcitool can even detect my phone, but kbluetooth insists i don't
have an adaptor installed, so i suspect the problem is kbluetooth not the

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I recall something like that, but I believe that there was a move to using /dev/mapper a while back.

A bit more messing about showed that even with:
- all references to the swap space being removed (grub/menu.lst, fstab, crypttab); and
- the swap partition itself being deleted
Still left me with this odd message of wait for the device to appear and a 1 minute wait.

In a flash of inspiration/lunacy I did a mkinitrd.

That solved it.

Seems to me that initrd has some knowledge of partitions that existed when initrd was created. I'm guessing that the UUID of the encrypted swap gets changed on every boot and that conflicts with what initrd expects.

If anyone knows, I'd be interested in the how/why this works.

My problem was solved by:

1. delete the swap partition & reboot
2. run mkinitrd
3. recreate a swap partition.
4. add an fstab entry:
/dev/mapper/cswap none swap sw 0 0
5. add an /etc/crypttab entry:
cswap /dev/swpart /dev/urandom cipher=aes-cbc-essiv:sha256,size=256,swap
6. As I don't suspend to disk, I removed the resume entry from /boot/grub/menu.lst
7. reboot.

Seems to do the trick. No message. No 1min boot delay.

I did not face this issue in 2009.0 or 2009.1.

On Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 1:49 PM, bascule <asura@...> wrote:
This is an odd thing that happens on only one machine that I've tried (so far).

Boot the 2010 One live CD.
Unexpectedly, it gives me a logon screen with a choice of 'xguest' or 'live'.
Tried to logon as 'live' with no password & kde4 as the wm.
A couple of flashes later I'm back at the logon screen.

By pure chance, I found that I could logon if I selected iceWM rather than kde4.

Looking in /ver/log/syslog I see: "kdm X Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly."

I can find no other clues.

I tried using XFdrake to change some parameters, logging out and retrying KDE, but always with the same result (kdm crash).

The XFdrake showed that my original settings were:

S3UniChrome-base cards with 3D support
1024x768 @ 60Hz
1024x768 24bpp

Not to be put off, I did a 'live install' from iceWM.
Once the install was complete and I was able to boot from my hard drive, I was faced with the same problem.
Buuut, I was then able to use XFdrake to change the parameters (to 1280x1024), logged out and was then able to logon using KDE4.

I have no idea what is going on here, but I'm past it.
Hopefully this post may give a clue to anyone else who gets stuck with this problem when trying to install.
After installing 2010 I encrypted my swap by replacing the swap entry in /etc/fstab with:

/dev/mapper/cswap none swap sw 0 0

and creating a new filr /etc/crypttab:

cswap /dev/sda2 /dev/urandom cipher=aes-cbc-essiv:sha256,size=256,hash=sha256,swap

This approach worked with 2009.

I then rebooted.
Everything progresses normally until:

"Waiting for device sda2 to appear (timeout 1min)"

And it did wait for 1min before saying:

"Could not find resume device..."

and then continuing to boot.

This message and the 1min delay on boot is not good, so I decided to back out the change.

I did a mkswap, used the given UUID in fstab and also in 'resume' in /boot/grub/menu.lst.

Yes--I just wanted to point out that OpenSuse 11.2 does not really
support KDE3. The Opensuse KDE3 page actually also says:
WARNING: The KDE:KDE3 repository is currently unmaintained and may not even
update and build correctly. We also do not accept any bugreports for it. Use
at your own risk.

to demonstrate, one from firefox - snap6 and one from konq - snap5, look at
the right hand side where there is a search box in the telegraph advert,
on another site my domain hosting provider a whole page was filled with
several frames each of which had it's own set of html code and scroll bars to
navigate around, if however i opened each frame separately in a new tab or
cases that would just be a single colour background!
so far i'm mildly unimpressed by 2009.1, particularly what happens in
konqueror, it seems that on a lot of pages where there should be a text entry
box i instead get a box full of the code for that box, attached are two pics
to demonstrate, one from firefox - snap6 and one from konq - snap5, look at
the right hand side where there is a search box in the telegraph advert,
on another site my domain hosting provider a whole page was filled with
several frames each of which had it's own set of html code and scroll bars to
navigate around, if however i opened each frame separately in a new tab or
window then they were rendered properly and one could see the part of the
original page that should have been rendered in the first place! in some
cases that would just be a single colour background!

i've never seen this before and i have no idea what terms to google on so any
help would be appreciated

KDE3? The catch is you have to install openSUSE 11.2 first, then add
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.2/ and then
add KDE3. Since those are RPMs, maybe you could get them to install in
2010.0? Considering the alternatives, to me it's a no-brainer - if
"upgrading" is actually necessary. What's wrong with sticking with 2009.0?

Still no idea what's going on with this, but at least I have a work-around.
Hunting around, I came across "mandriva_seed.sh" and used it to make a USB stick into a 2010 One install system.
Very nice.

On Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 7:29 AM, adam jvok <ajvok1@...> wrote:

I also tested the CD on another machine that had an internal CD drive.
That worked fine. So the problem is not the CD itself.

Given that:
a) the laptop/CD drive/USB-IDE/adapter worked well with different boot CDs (including 2009.1 One - just tried that); and
b) the 2010 One CD works on another machine
It seems to me that the problem lies in the software on the 2010 One CD.
This was not an issue with 2009.

Anyone had success booting the 2010 One CD from a USB drive?

On Mon, Nov 9, 2009 at 8:48 PM, adam jvok <ajvok1@...> wrote:

Downloaded 2010 (One).
Verified the checksum.
Burned to CD.
The target machine is a laptop with no CD of its own.
I have a USB/IDE converter and an old internal IDE CD drive (nolonger internal to anything!).
I connect the CD drive via the laptop's USB port.

I get the splash screen, then press ESC to see whats going on:

.. Please wait detecting USB devices...
...
Uniform CD-ROM driver revision 3.20
...
[sr0:] unhandled sense code

Buffered I/O error on device sr0

These messages then repeat until I give up and try again. Several times. All with the same result.

You might think that the IDE/USB/External CD are to blame but:
- I installed 2 previous versions of Mandriva on this laptop using the same method/adapter/CD drive.
- I just booted a SLAX (www.slax.org) cd on this same setup with no issues.

Any suggestions?

> Don't yet know about 2010 though.

I had done that with 2009.0 since KDE4 was effectively unusable
there, but had stuck with KDE4 on 2009.1 to try to see if it was going
to be usable on my main machines (I have a bunch of partitions
on one laptop that I have various test Linuxes installed on). I must
note, though, that KDE3 on 2009.0/.1 is not 100% of the KDE3 on 2008.1.
Things like the kparts elements of Gwenview that allow Konqueror to
be a good photo browser are missing (since the Gwenview is the KDE4
version). Thus, you have to go back to 2008.1 to get a completely
functional KDE3 with Mandriva.

Trying x86_84 install of 2010 right now to see if it works any better.
Then it will be Debian 5.0 going for a spin (with KDE3). Also downloaded
>> RC2 have been basically fine on this same machine and
>> then the release be completely unstable in every way?
>>
>> And before somebody blames the download/disc:
>> Powerpack DVDs were downloaded via bittorrent, and
>> their md5sum's are correct. Burned dvds were also
>> compared against iso's and were perfect.
>>
>> Really wondering whether to stay with Mandriva now.
>> Main desktops are still 2008.1 and KDE3. Rock solid
>> stable (OS and KDE both run for 4mos without issues)
>> and fantastic usability for my work. Obviously, though,
>> it is time to update. Was hoping 2010 would be better
>> than 2009.1, which I have been using on a laptop. Sure
>> doesn't look that way, though. Downloading Debian 5.0
>> to see how its KDE3 works. Any other suggestions would
>> be appreciated.
>> Norm
>>
>>
>
> Hello Norm,
> I empathize. I have Mandriva 2009.1 PowerPack with KDE4 running on
> several machines now, including my Intel Q9550S box and my Phenom II 940
> box with no problems at all. I have Mandrive 2009.1 running with GNOME
> on several other boxes (better Thai support) also with no problems. I
> am planning to put 2010 on the Phenom II box tonight. I'll report back
> any problems. Were I you, I would install 2009.1 and patch it up to
> current level. KDE4 has been very well behaved with the last set of
> patches. I recall also, you can run "urpmi task-kde3" still to pick up
> the kde3 binaries.
>
> If you're really serious about the KDE 3 support though, PCLinuxOS and
> Debian still have KDE 3 support.
>
> Cheers,
> Arnold
>

I put 2010 on a second boot partition on my Phenom II box. The install
went perfectly. I'm using ext3 filesystems BTW. Got wireless working.
Went to EasyURPMI to set up updates, Updates went on fine. Then I
decided to build the kernel module for my RocketRAID 2640x4 card. No
go. Compiler errors about multiple typedefs and multiple defs. Oh
well, Set up an account with Highpoint and reported the problem. Let's
see what comes back.

Cheers,
Arnold

Hi Norm,
One thing I'm puzzled by. Did you try the "urpmi task-kde3" on your
2009.1 machine? I thought that capability still existed in 2009.1.
Don't yet know about 2010 though.

My couple days of experience with 2010 has been great, but I
just updated to 4.5.3, and now I can't get KDE to start
properly. It always crashes, saying that KWin has died.
I blew away .kde4 and rebooted, but no joy.

Incidentally, KDE running on a vncserver is working just fine!

What now?
